Buenaldo Linglong, ahola dalme townfall y remake de sh1
As a big time Silent Hill fan whose played and owns every game including the original physical copies (I'm even in favor of the not so great movies lol) I was not a fan of this game in the slightest. To me nothing about this game made me feel like I was playing a Silent Hill game which is what makes the experiences unique within this franchise. I was very excited for this prior to launch but found myself just not enjoying it much at all. I believe if it wasn't advertised as a Silent Hill game and something else standalone I'd be more supportive of it.
super spiel
this game is peak all those fat chuds who tell you "ITS TOO DIFFERENT FROM 2MAKE" "TOWNFALL IS BETTER" are actual dorks who hate fun
If you're looking at the reviews for a game called Silent Hill f you're already interested in the idea of a Silent Hill game centered around womanhood like Silent Hill 3 and it's very good at that. Is it better than 3? Who cares, two cakes!
Ebisugaoka in Silence: Silent Hill's stellar homecoming to Japan
Silent Hill f at times feels more like a homecoming of sorts (no pun intended with the fifth installment of the franchise): the Japanese horror setting couldn't be more at home than in the insular nation, and indeed the game pulls the whole thing off so marvelously that by the time you finish playing it, it feels like a Silent Hill game through and through. Yet a couple of design decisions keep it from attaining the rank of perfection. Silent Hill f puts you in the shoes of Hinako Shimizu, a Japanese teenage girl who, for reasons at first unclear to the player, storms out of her home and wanders into the center of her town, Ebisugaoka. After a short rendezvous with her friends, they are interrupted by the arrival of an inexorable tide of corrupted, decaying flowers that precede the passing of a horrible, white-gowned monster. Afterwards, everything goes awry, with the city becoming populated with warped, distorted figures befitting any Silent Hill game: monstrous, humanoid figures that twist and contort in inhumane ways that threaten Hinako as she traverses the deserted streets and alleys of Ebisugaoka. As befits a Silent Hill game, the game has its very own rendition of the franchise's defining Otherworld, in which Hinako must confront some of her darkest and most twisted fears. All of this is conveyed in a vibrant, lavishly detailed world, which is brought to life by the Unreal Engine 5 in what can arguably be the engine's most polished optimisation. The game initially had a somewhat rocky start performance-wise, but already with the first updates, the studio managed to streamline performance by giant leaps and now it always runs at stable 60 fps, with graphics cranked up to the maximum. The voice acting is, simply put, great. I played it with the Japanese dub and I never looked back: the sheer weight and emotion that the voice actors conveyed in this game are nothing short of career-defining, at least in terms of the videogame industry. Finally, while the music doesn't quite feature iconic tracks like Silent Hill 2's, it still plays and feels like music befitting a Silent Hill game. However, there are some design decisions that for me keep the game from being perfect, at least: to begin with, combat, while a healthy departure from Silent Hill 2's clunky animations and virtually non-existent complexity, is at times a bit too flashy for my taste. Like, Hinako can dodge, charge up attacks and, in the Otherworld, get a hold of some pretty powerful weapons, to say the least. Boss fights are all well and good and feel adequately crafted, but the very fact that a teenage girl should be facing down monstrous abominations in single combat and defeating them at times feels a little perplexing, if not mood-breaking. Then, there is the aesthetic rationale behind choosing flowers as the game's twisted Leitmotif. Simply put: everything "scary" in the game is covered with flowers. But flowers, decaying or not, are not the epitome of fear. Facing down a huge monster with a giant cleaver would have felt inordinately scarier, had he not been covered with blooms and petals. The Otherworld also suffers from contrived aesthetic decisions: at times it feels like a watery, dreamy underworld, if that somehow makes sense. It feels suffocating and surreal, but never quite hellish as that of Silent Hill 2. There is also the commercial decision not to release the white uniform that was available only to pre-ordering customers. Mind you, I did preorder the game and I own the white uniform and having played with all of them, I can say it is the most fitting outfit for Hinako, which makes me extremely sad that most players won't ever get to experience it, unless Konami gets to release it somewhere down the line. Yet the game's most egregious design decision is that you are supposed to play it four times (at least) to finally get to see the real ending. Not once, not twice, not thrice, but four times. Now, don't get me wrong, few games manage to entice you as much as this one to go for a second playthrough, at least (spoilers about NG+ mechanics incoming):
not only do you get new cutscenes, but many cutscenes you previously watched are completely re-written, the events unfolding as they previously did but with new dialogues that showcase different layers and scope of the truth that you begin to unravel. Furthermore, you get to unlock new areas complete with new (and obscure) puzzles that are required to unlock the game's ulterior endings.
Now, I love replaying games and unlocking new features for NG+ and all, but I for one believe that games should allow you to experience the full story on the first go, and sure, you might get alternate endings and stuff if you play it again, but it should be an optional thing. In Silent Hill f you won't get to see the whole extent of the story, not even understand it fully, if you cruise through it only once. Only after playing it four times and unlocking its final ending did I get to see the full picture. Granted, it was a beautiful journey and the uniqueness of how it is told makes it one of the most memorable in gaming, but it is a shame to know that most players won't be bothered to play this game twice, let alone four times, to properly get to experience the full extent and complexity of the story. Yet all in all, Silent Hill f is a tremendously successful game, in that it delivers a charismatic world, filled with memorable characters and a plot that due to its complexity and singular manner in which it is told will stay with you long after you finish the game. All of this brought to life with beautiful graphics in a game that runs smooth as silk, with an exquisitely fun gameplay that, even if at times detracts from a fully horror experience, never fails to deliver a game that despite its controversial NG+ mechanics is unmistakably fun, consistently engaging, and enticing through and through. 8.5/10 TL;DR: Exquisite horror game with captivating story and characters, coupled with enticing combat and beautiful (and extremely well-optimised) graphics that bring the reality of 1960s Japan to life. The game, however, doesn't feel quite as suffocating or scary as other games in the franchise, and it relies heavily on multiple playthroughs in NG+ to properly understand the story. Still, feels like a Silent Hill game through and through.
