very sylish and satisfying beat em up, very replayable, cool progression, nice art style, classic revenge story. some distracting elements because being published by kepler means the game is pretty pozzed; cartoonish amounts of blacks (game is set in china btw) and you get to beat up a lot of women, which is pretty funny but most of them are built like 'roided up trannyzillas. still excellent.

We usually save the world with Karate. But today we are getting REVENGE with Karate. Sifu is a 2023 action game and Iko Uwais simulator created by Sloclap studios. You play as, actually I don’t know, they never said his or her name so I guess it’s just you. After your father and Sifu are murdered by his original disciples, you train for 8 years, mastering martial arts and Kung Fu so you can hunt down your father’s killers instead of just getting a gun and waiting outside their homes like a real man. I think this is Hong Kong, I actually don’t know how hard it is to get a gun off the streets. Taking some inspiration from the Arkham Batman games, Sifu is a third person brawler where you use movie-inspired kung fu to just absolutely beat the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ out of everyone and everything stupid enough to get in your way. You have two attack buttons, a grab, a block, and two types of dodges, one is more of a “Get out of the way” and the other is a duck and weave and lift your foot so they can’t kick your legs out from under you. They’ll do it anyway, I never see the leg sweep coming. Like, out of the 200 or so leg sweeps I’ve dodged maybe 20. The big gimmick out of this one is that you have as many lives as a human being could have before you basically just age to dust. Your character carries these talisman’s with him that will revive him upon death, but in exchange take a year off your life. The more you die without taking out elite enemies or the dude that got you, the more years the medallions take. I didn’t count how many lives you actually have in one go, but if you somehow go from age 20 to age 70 in one go then maybe it’s time to find a new game to play. Combat is how you would think a modern brawler would go. You get surrounded by goons and then you can either go to town on them or be patient and wait for them to attack you. Every enemy has two health bars, an actual health bar and a stagger meter. If you take out their health, they just drop, but if you fill their stagger bar, you can take them out with a finisher and get some health back. Its fun, its a good system, you don’t have a counter button you instead learn how to parry their attacks or dodge them at the right time so you can stun and stagger whoever you’re fighting. You got a bunch of enemies to fight from average goons to professional fighters to literally me big chunky boys. The big problem is that I’m pretty sure I don’t know how to play. I finished the game with both endings, I can fight some of the bosses with barely any damage taken, but I still feel like I’m playing the game wrong. Looking online and watching Sifu fans play, yeah, I am, I suck at this game. But that’s okay, we can’t all be good at everything. You can beat Sifu in 4 to 5 hours on your first go if you aren’t completely getting decimated. Figuring out gimmicks for bosses and mini bosses isn’t the hardest thing in the world, but it can be frustrating when you don’t seem to be making any progress. And like I said, I’m old, I’m ancient, I saw the dinosaurs get wiped out, so the sudden leg sweep will basically always get me unless I ACTUALLY see it coming from a mile away. The older your character gets, the more damage he does, but the more damage you take. So if you’re getting to the point that you’re losing a quarter of your health with every hit and you’re not doing any better, then maybe restart the run or go back a level and try again with a better age bracket. Outside of the story mode, you get an arena mode that’s basically just combat challenges. Sifu was a good game, I had fun with it, but maybe get it on sale, especially if you aren’t all that good with more difficult games. Karate Master 3: gets 7 parried punches out of 10. Good game, me like. Okay now for the more in depth review, I like this game a lot in pretty much every regard but honestly it's almost too easy? Most things that are hard in the game are either gimmicky or harder because of how you choose to play the game. What I have noticed from beating the game and doing almost all the challenges (other than the achivments) is that the skill celling is... Actually really low, for a first time playthrough then a second then a third it's fine, great even however you will reach the skill celling by the second playthough and the game is fairly short so that's like after 12 hours and the game has so much... Fake depth. There are so many combos, moves and situational actions that can really show off how good you are at the game but that's the thing, it's more flash than substance. The more complicated moves take time to learn and the understanding of when to use them making them even harder to learn, but I said it was too easy so why am I complaing? I can learn how to play the game and look good while doing it. Well you see- There's no incentive. The methods that I learned from my first playthrough are still the gold standard and none of those require special input or situational understanding, they just work and it is so hard to beat. I just get frustrated trying to learn the depth when it just feels less effective. I have seen people who have mastered the game and ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ is it clean but one thing I have learned and also see in those videos is rarely do they actually just do the path of most efficiency not because they are so good but because if they did, they couldn't be flashy and then if they couldn't be flashy all that time they spent learning was pointless. Overall I really like the game and I wouldn't have tried to get better at it if I didn't but with that being said I just wish there was more of a reason to, I already found my win buttons and it is so hard to get out of the programing to just use them, over and over again, it's too bad but then again the fact that there is more to learn when I already have "mastered" the game is a great thing for a great game.
Great game. Can technically beat this in ~5-10 hrs but the real fun, for me at least, was 'getting good'. Age 20 completion, going for higher scores, all arena challenges, etc. Highly recommend the arenas once you're done with the story - lots of new scenarios and content within. 'Tickets please!' was a personal favorite.
Words can't describe how badass you feel in this game, just play it its so good.
