Just wasn't very fun.
I pre-ordered the ultimate or whatever extra cost edition, and they turned off local multiplayer after I bought it and they released it.
I have owned every Civ game since Civ 2 and this is the first Civ that I don't care for. From the game play to the victory conditions, it's lacking. Maybe they were targeting a newer generation, or maybe they just missed the mark. Regardless, I've logged 33 hours on Civ 7 and will probably log a few more to give it a fair chance. Otherwise, I'll be playing the previous Civ games much more often than this. I wouldn't recommend this Civ. Wait for a real expansion or just save your money....
After a few playthroughs, this game just isn't grabbing me the way all other Civ games have, and I've been playing since Civ 2. I'm not a fan of the gameplay & progression, personally, although I understand why some might prefer the style. My biggest criticism of 7 is how busy the map gets. There's no room to breath, it just seems like the cities kind of run together, and there isn't any space between them. The maps just get.... busy. Nothing stands out, nothing seems epic. Civ 5 & 6 are my favorites, in that order. I'd recommend going back, if you still want to enjoy Civ.
This game just feels empty compared to previous civ games. The civics and research tree just blend one into another, and the lack of unit upgrades feels lazy. In Civ 6, you got swordsmen upgrade into longswordsmen after the researching of steel. Now its swordsmen, into... swordsmen (part 2). None of it feels either especially linked to either the technology or the civ. The switching of the civs is okay I guess, it kind or works. You can folllow a narrative - rome to norman france, to modern day french empire kind of holds as a civ history. But the resets, even if you want it to be continuous, mean that you lose your entire army and get it generically upgraded to relevant era units, regardless of whether you actually researched them in time of the previous era. And ERAs. Wow, what a ♥♥♥♥ show. No more can you build a science powerhouse and get through the eras quickly. NO more reseraching renaissance tech whilst someone has just entered the medieval period and earning an advantage. No, if you earn more science, and reserach everything, what do you get? The chance to do "further science" - something that was previously held for the end game of science when we went beyond the modern era. Nothing feels like it matters when you play, it all feels so damn arbitrary. And that's before you get to the city and town modelling. They've tried once again here to copy humankind's features and failed. IN humankind, you can link smaller towns to your major cities, only having a few cities and as many feeder towns as you want. That tracks. In Civ, you're capped on total settlements, regardless of type. SO other than the obvious cost and time penalties to build anything (becuase everything else is just based on gold purchases), why wouldn't you just have 10 cities and no towns? What is the point? I have played every Civ game since the first and I am a diehard fan of this franchise. Hundreds of hours on each game individually, and Civ 5 was one of my favourite strategy games ever. But this is just bland, desperate to be something it isn't, and trying to copy its competitors and failing instead of doing what civ does best, coming up with unique and new features (like the weather events or religions introduced a couple games back), that make you want to say one turn more.....
This game is honestly unplayable due to poor programming. Units constantly just walk the completely opposite direction where you you tell them to go. Embarrassing that this game is a year old and still this bad. It is obvious no one in leadership at Take Two knows anything about video games, short the stock into oblivion.
I've always been a Civ fan, every game has been an upgrade of the game before with better experience. However i can't say the same for Civ VII. Yes it has beter graphics ad cosmetics, the Commander battle system and the vertical city build is great, but the overall gameplay is weak and repetitious. Building wonders gives no great benefits, leaders buffs are not great, tech tree is too short. Its just too fair when the world isn't. Diplomatic option on Civ VI is limited, here its worse. Everytime you build a wonder, the reward animation is weak, lazy, and Gwendoine Christie's voice over is used at its minimum effort.
I've been playing Civilization since 1991. This is the worst of them all.
