A visual novel about a memory that a boy named Mark tries very hard to forget, and a girl named Myra who unearths it.

I’m surprised to see a tribute referencing umineko and rewrite.
Played outside of steam so that explains why I've fully completed it with only 10 minutes of playtime.. Very beautiful game, story feels nostalgic for some odd reason..
The story of this game is absolutely awe inspiring. I cannot recommend enough. :)
Sepia Tears is a compact romance visual novel that makes effective use of memory, regret, and emotional uncertainty to give a familiar anime-inspired premise considerably more substance than it initially appears to possess. The story follows Mark, a young man determined to suppress a particular memory, and Myra, the girl who brings that buried part of his past back into focus. Their search for an almost storybook version of romance gradually exposes the uncomfortable reality that relationships rarely develop according to idealized expectations. Rather than relying entirely on sweetness and predictable romantic encounters, the narrative mixes affection, awkwardness, comedy, mystery, and melancholy into a surprisingly thoughtful experience. The strongest aspect is its writing and character interaction. Mark's reluctance to confront his memories gives the story an immediate element of mystery, while Myra serves as more than a conventional romantic interest. Her presence forces him to reconsider experiences he would prefer to leave untouched. The relationship between memory and reality becomes increasingly important as the story develops, allowing apparently ordinary conversations to gain additional meaning later. This approach gives the narrative emotional momentum without requiring an elaborate plot filled with constant dramatic events. There is also an enjoyable degree of self-awareness in the dialogue. The game understands the conventions associated with romance visual novels and anime storytelling, sometimes embracing them while at other times quietly making fun of them. Its humor can be playful and occasionally rooted in meme or internet culture, creating a noticeable contrast with the more sentimental portions of the story. Not every joke lands equally well, particularly for readers unfamiliar with that style of humor, but the lighter material prevents the introspective themes from becoming excessively gloomy. At around 40,000 words, the narrative has enough room to establish its characters and central mystery while remaining approachable for players who do not want an enormous visual novel. Interaction is naturally limited because reading is the primary activity. Anyone expecting complex gameplay systems, exploration, or frequent mechanical challenges will find little of that here. Its appeal instead comes from dialogue, character development, revelations, atmosphere, and seeing how Mark's understanding of the past evolves. For players comfortable with largely passive storytelling, the straightforward structure works well. The visual presentation reinforces the intimate nature of the story. Its hand-drawn, anime-influenced artwork has the unmistakable character of a smaller independent production, but it fits the material effectively. Snowy imagery and subdued environments contribute to the reflective mood, particularly when the narrative becomes more concerned with loneliness and memories. The included CG gallery provides additional incentive to revisit the artwork, collecting regular illustrations, chibi images, and promotional material. A vocal ending song is another welcome touch and helps the conclusion feel more carefully presented. Audio and visuals are not extravagant enough to compete with lavish commercial visual novels, but the production generally understands its limitations. The focus remains on the script rather than spectacle. There is no need for constant animation or elaborate cinematic presentation because the emotional impact is carried primarily through dialogue, expressions, music, and atmosphere. That modest approach gives the experience a certain charm, although players accustomed to fully voiced characters and highly animated visual novels may find it comparatively basic. Scarlet String Studios serves as both developer and publisher, and the project demonstrates a clear understanding of the audience it is targeting. It is particularly suitable for readers interested in anime-style romance but wanting something that does more than simply reproduce familiar dating-sim situations. Themes involving forgotten experiences, imperfect relationships, emotional avoidance, and the difference between imagined romance and reality provide a more interesting foundation than the seemingly conventional setup suggests. There are shortcomings worth considering. The tonal transitions between comedy and emotional drama can occasionally feel abrupt, and some humor has aged more noticeably than the central relationship material. Certain character behaviors deliberately draw upon recognizable genre archetypes, which can initially make portions of the narrative seem more predictable than they eventually become. The limited interactivity also means that readers who prefer visual novels built around numerous consequential decisions or dramatically branching routes may find the experience too linear. Its relatively small production scope is consistently visible as well. Steam Deck compatibility is somewhat less definitive than the game's lightweight presentation might suggest. Steam currently exposes Steam Deck compatibility information for the title and lists partial controller support, but the available store information does not provide a clear Verified or Playable classification in the material shown. Because it is fundamentally a text-focused visual novel with Linux support and modest interaction demands, it may be possible to play it on Steam Deck, but it should not be described as officially Steam Deck Verified based on the current listing. Players intending to use the handheld should therefore expect that manual configuration, touch input, trackpads, or controller adjustments could potentially be necessary. Overall, this is a charming example of how a relatively small visual novel can build emotional significance through writing rather than expensive production values. Its combination of romance, humor, mystery, nostalgia, and melancholy gives it an identity beyond its anime-inspired appearance. The gradual examination of Mark's memories and his connection with Myra provides the emotional center, while the snowy atmosphere and understated presentation complement the story's bittersweet personality. Some dated humor, limited interaction, and modest visuals keep it from reaching the highest tier of the genre, but readers who appreciate short, character-focused visual novels should find plenty to enjoy.
