Sepia Tears is a romance visual novel that I ended up liking mostly because of the way it handles its characters. I play as Mark, a fairly normal high school student whose life gets complicated when Myra arrives and starts digging into a memory that he would rather forget. From there the story becomes a mix of romance, comedy and a bit of mystery, with most of the game being about getting to know the characters and seeing how their relationships develop. The basic setup is familiar, but I think the writing gives it enough personality to stand out. The characters are easily the best part for me. Mark actually has a personality, which I appreciate because it means I am not just playing as a completely blank character who says whatever I am thinking. Myra is the obvious focus, but the supporting cast also gets enough attention to make the school setting feel more alive. I especially like the way the dialogue can switch between genuinely emotional moments and really dry jokes. Some of the humour is deliberately silly, but there are enough quieter moments underneath it to stop the whole story from feeling like a parody of a romance visual novel. The story is fairly short at around 40,000 words, and I think that works in its favour for the most part. I never feel like the game is dragging out a simple idea just to make the runtime longer. The seven day structure gives everything a clear pace, and the story gradually reveals why Mark is so reluctant to deal with his past. There are some choices along the way, although I would not say I have a huge amount of control over the overall direction. Most of the story is fairly linear, so I am mainly reading to see how everything develops rather than constantly changing the outcome. The presentation has also aged better than I expected. The character artwork and chibi scenes give it plenty of charm, while the use of real photographs for some backgrounds gives the game a slightly unusual look. The soundtrack is another thing I enjoyed because it is generally calm and works well with the more emotional parts of the story. There is even a vocal ending song, which feels like a nice finishing touch. The game also has a CG gallery, so I have something to look back through after finishing the story. The biggest issue for me is that some of the story beats are much stronger than others. There are moments where I really care about what is happening, but there are also parts that rely heavily on familiar romance and anime ideas. Some of the jokes work really well for me while others can feel forced, and the actual choices do not always have as much impact as I would like. I also think the conclusion could have been handled with a little more depth because the build up makes me expect something more substantial from certain parts of the story. These are not huge problems, but they stop it from feeling like an exceptional visual novel. I do think the overall package is very fair considering the game is free. I get the full original story, the artwork, soundtrack and achievements without having to pay for the base game. There is also a Reprise Edition that adds three more chapters, extra artwork, new character sprites and a remastered soundtrack, so there is more of the story available beyond the original release. I like that the original game can still stand on its own instead of feeling like an incomplete demo for something I have to buy. Overall, Sepia Tears is a sweet and sometimes surprisingly emotional visual novel that works best when I let myself get invested in the characters. I like Mark and Myra, the dry humour, the music and the way the story slowly brings the past back into the present. The fairly linear structure and occasional use of familiar romance ideas hold it back, and I think some parts of the ending could have had more impact. Still, it is a well put together little story with enough personality to make the short length worthwhile, and I think it is especially easy to recommend when I want something relaxed and story focused rather than a game with lots of mechanics.
