It's the easiest 'find 100 cats' type of game that I played. Basically 40 seconds and it's done.
"Hidden Cats - Pirates" is one of literally hundreds of simple, minimalist 2D line art "Find 100 Hidden turnips" or whatever games... hunt through a simple illustration to find 100 hidden things. The first time I saw one of these I thought it was a fairly okay, if short experience... but the problem is, there's literally hundreds of these plaguing the store. They're fairly low effort when you think about what's needed to make a more genuine game. The whole thing could have been done in a web browser. We have to ask if Steam was intended to compete with Firefox, Chrome or Safari. I didn't spend thousands building a gaming rig so I could play glorified browser games. The other problem is just how many of these there are... they're practically spamming the Steam store at this point. It's close to pollution... mass produced slop that genuine game developers have to try to compete with to get visibility for their more seriously developed games. And that's not good for gamers, or for real developers. This game features very lacklustre minimalist "art" for graphics instead of anything remotely contemporary. I'm sure the "developer" thought this would come across as "artistic", but it doesn't, it comes across as "really lazy". Yes, contemporary 3D graphics take a lot of time and effort to create. That doesn't mean it's okay not to bother! Developers must try to understand that gaming is a visual medium, and gamers spend a lot of money on high end gaming rigs for a reason. And that reason is not so they can look at lazy, phoned-in half efforts like this. Now on to pricing and value for gamers. This is "free" enough (not every "free" game in the "free" section is truly free, there's usually some hidden price tag), at least you won't be expected to spend any more money after you download this, but just because something is free doesn't mean it's good, and the cost of a game is more than just financial, your time is valuable too. I suspect that this is only free in a limited sense, and at some point in the future the developer will staple some paid DLC onto it. The presence of a couple of fake looking reviews does seem to imply that's a possible setup that's happening. In terms of public reception, this failed. There's over 130 million unique gamers visiting Steam every month. SteamDB showed the game peaked at only 6 concurrent players... this is a dismal public reception. This was so bad they couldn't even give it away. It's important to note that, despite this being such a low quality product, there's a number of positive reviews that all appeared immediately after the game launched, from suspiciously inactive Steam accounts that have reviewed almost no other games apart from other games from this "developer". Take the review score of this game with a grain of salt. Given that this free title won't increase your game collector count, is it worth your time to add it to your library? I think you should give this one a miss. Although it's free, your time and storage are valuable resources, and the market is filled with superior options.
This game is a simple hidden game with cats but honestly they look more like slightly creepy aliens? There is no counter to know how many you have found so you have to rely on the achievements (one per creature). The number of achievements wouldn't be a problem if the creatures weren't so easy to find, probably because the map is so small but also no effort was made to hide them, which meant notifications kept popping up for 5 minutes after I had closed the game. There is a score board but you can only see your scores so it's useless for two reasons, one you can't compare yourself to other players and two even if you could what pleasure is there is comparing your click speed. In short it's bad and the whole series seems to be like that, I only played the free ones (hidden cats halloween, hidden cats pirates and hidden cats snow which is a little better) and even that was too much.
One of the easiest game of the genre. Easy Achievements, 100% / 2min.
