This game's reviews being mixed is a shame. Before reviewing, I would strongly recommend playing through the entirety of this games endings. The final one is uncomfortable, yet poignant. Especially with the knowledge from playing "He ♥♥♥♥♥♥ the girl out of me" beforehand. Both games hurt to play. But I would take that pain over never having played these. Because they meant a lot to me.
Plenty of video games have bad endings where the player is forced to do evil, but rarely is it this realistically mundane. How grounded this story is makes the bad endings sting so much more to do. Despite only being 13 minutes long for all three endings, it's a very emotional charged piece of art. The handmade feel of the visuals is fitting and helps make the "Maybe next time" cutscene especially impactful. Several negative reviews are from people who don't understand that just because a player character can say or do something bad, does not mean the video game is endorsing it. Saving You From Yourself is very clearly condemning the Therapist in 2/3 of its endings.

Crazy seeing how the game is literally a "Hey, look at how horrible of a person you are for denying this person of what they need to be happy, look at how your God complex is driving these people to the ground and making them unable to afford basic things even to the point of food, look at how much of a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ you are that you are forcing these people to go through unsafe methods to be happy. ♥♥♥♥ you.", a literal story by a trans person made about how much it hurts not to be able to receive the treatment you need because some ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ just refuses to since it funds his wallet, and somehow a lot of people saw it as a genuine "Yeah, the game is transphobic." Like, I can get feeling uncomfortable in the game meant to make you feel uncomfortable (for which it should get a positive review but whatever), but so many of the negative reviews just dont know what the ♥♥♥♥ they talkin bout sob Anyways, wonderful game
Short and simple. An interesting 5 minutes. Understand the mixed reviews but don't agree-- the therapist is intentionally awful. I just wish it chose either the therapist or arle to be the main pov and obscured the actions of the other party Edit: just watched the video. Dear god does this weigh on my soul. Extremely good piece of art.
I was really split on what to give this for a review. I have been playing loads of quick easy visual novel games for their achievements and skipping the story where possible. But I cannot help but see how harmful the views in this story were. I can only guess this was written by somebody who doesn't know what they are talking about because the views are hurtful and damaging. I am not a trans person so I cannot speak to the impact of that but I am a therapist and I can say for certain this is not a realistic way of working. They could have made a crap game and not done any harm but they chose to do both,
This game is probably going to stick with me for a while. It's a good game that shows what happens when you're pitted against a therapist that doesn't have their priorities right. The misaligned thought of "this is for your own good" when it just isn't. And to make you feel the worst of it, you're placed in the shoes of that therapist, with glimpses to how your actions have deeply affected your patient. Some of the negative reviews don't seem to grasp the game. It's very clear, at least to me, that the person you're playing as is not meant to have someone's best interests at heart. And the resulting effect on the patient is also not meant to be reflective of how they're meant to be, or rather what the system led them to think. This game is not transphobic, but it does force you to feel that transphobia by being the bigot and feeling the harm being as such causes.
Transphobia in game form. Not even close to the actual experience I had starting my transition as a woman. I'm sure it's not so easy for everyone, but seriously, this is ♥♥♥♥♥♥. Two of three endings made me extremely uncomfortable.
made me cry
♥♥♥♥♥♥ game, oversimplifies something way more complex, and for what the game proposes, the dialogues and choices should be much more extensive—very little dialogue. It's a completely one-sided, biased story because the therapist was intentionally bad or 100% permissive (Denise also gives crappy advice). Why couldn't it be a game where the process of truly getting to know the other person and giving or withholding professional approval became complex? poor concept for something that tries to be serious, irresponsible.
