An interesting card game. Has a unique art style and mechanics. Felt like an idea made by a very small group if not one person. You get one of out four decks free. Would be perfectly fine if there were more players.

。。 。 translate part 1...fight fight fight...translate part 2...fight fight fight...translate part 3...fight fight fight...okay...next card...
+unique arts -performance issue, slow animation & gameplay speed... -lack of settings/configurations... -no one is playing online, & computer is very slow...
This is a very nice game if you like card games. The bad: It's a bit of a headache to remember the new terminology like Wyrd (spell) any some others. It's a bit too minimalistic. Some things should be bigger, other thing should be smaller. The collection of cards seems low at the moment but it's expected from an early access game. The good: The new mechanics are very nice. Specifically the Combo mechanic. It's just great. Matching colors and careful positioning that make your cards an unstopable force feels very nice. The art is original. It's atmospheric, it has character and distinguishes itself. It could be improved but the art direction is a refreshing in todays world of only cartoonish art styles. It has a decent tutorial. I don't believe you can make this your main game right now. It doesn't seem to have enough to offer for hours at a time. But it does seem that with time it will improve and be a good card game.
Disclaimer: I personally know the music composer, and have met the developers at an expo. As someone with thousands of hours in Hearthstone, and nostalgia for playing Magic as a child, Rival Books hits all the good spots for me. It was very easy to pick up, as it shares a lot of mechanics with Hearthstone, but it feels VERY fresh. The colour/combo system gives the game an entirely new spin on board control, allowing me to make trades that would look silly in another card game, but ruining my opponents ability to combo (and, ultimately, their ability to win the game). The combo system also gives a cool spin on clocks - since larger combos do damage to your opponent every turn, games can hit a state where both players are not attacking each other, but instead adjusting their combos and boards to race each other down. As well, you can create decks with the intention of simply building combos to "not lose" instead of "winning" - you never have to attack the enemy, the ultimate control deck! It's fantastic. Also, the aesthetic and character design is phenomenal - they are honestly the most memorable cards I think I've ever seen. I've only played the Grimoirum faction so far, but the four factions all look like they play very differently (only the Theurgia Goetia have decent card draw) while allowing a variety of decks to be built with each. At the time of writing, the only way to obtain new cards is to buy the pre-determined packs, which is fair but not my jam (booster packs are fun!). The biggest issue the game has is... nobody is playing it! After a few seconds of searching for an opponent, the game auto-matches you against AI (which, even at the highest difficulty, still feel very easy - I've only lost 1 game out of nearly 50) - I'd like this to be changed, having a different mode for VS AI. Even with a small dedicated player base, two people would have to search for a game within seconds of each other to be matched. The fact I've played 10 hours against the computer definitely speaks volumes about how much fun I've been having with Rival Books though. I sincerely hope it gains traction, I can only imagine it will get better as time goes on.
Pros : - Looks decent, though the style may not be everyone's cup of tea - Gameplay / deckbuilding seem quite deep Cons : - Client is missing lots of features / not even working properly - You get matched with bots after 10 seconds in queue, so you'll never see a real person unless you play with friends, and believe me bots get boring fast - Tagged as F2P, but if you want all cards you NEED to invest 25 bucks or something like that, which is way too much for a game in that state
