Short but fun and relaxing platformer.
Fun little platformer.. It's nice to play a simple, exploration, collect the coins, find the secrets game, without all the usual tedious indie nonsense added in (emotional story, physics puzzles, gravity switching, portals, changing characters etc. etc.) I really enjoyed this game.. thumbs up!
Yes.
charming little retro platformer, true hidden gem
a perfect simple casual platformer
In nomine gameri, Just listen to that woonderful opening song! Just look at the pure retro style graphics! This is the call for an Adventure. Jump your way through that other island and collect ring alng the way, all of them! What more arguments do you need to play that game? Well, you play a pink T-Rex. The Gamortician says Yes.
Rex: Another Island is a retro-styled platform adventure developed by shysaursoft and published by Pixeljam that builds its identity around exploration, movement, and player-driven discovery. Inspired by older generations of platform games while incorporating a more open structure, the game avoids heavily scripted progression in favor of encouraging players to wander through a large world filled with secrets, collectibles, and environmental challenges. It delivers an experience that feels both nostalgic and surprisingly refreshing, especially for players who enjoy uncovering hidden content at their own pace. The adventure takes place across a sprawling interconnected island where exploration serves as the primary source of progression. Instead of dividing gameplay into isolated levels, Rex: Another Island presents a world that gradually reveals itself as players venture farther into dangerous and unfamiliar territory. New areas become opportunities for discovery rather than simple checkpoints between objectives. This structure creates a strong sense of adventure, rewarding curiosity and persistence far more than straightforward completion. Platforming mechanics form the foundation of the experience. Movement feels central to everything players do, from crossing hazardous terrain to uncovering hidden areas concealed throughout the world. Precision jumping and environmental awareness become increasingly important as challenges grow more demanding. The game steadily introduces more difficult platforming sequences without creating unfair barriers, allowing players to improve naturally through repetition and exploration. Success comes from mastering movement rather than relying on upgrades or combat systems. The open-ended structure becomes one of the title's greatest strengths. Players are rarely forced down a single route, creating freedom that encourages experimentation and personal pacing. If one section proves difficult, exploration can continue elsewhere before returning later with improved familiarity or greater confidence. This flexibility helps maintain momentum while reducing frustration, making the world feel inviting rather than restrictive. Collectibles play a major role in giving exploration purpose. Hidden currency, secrets, and optional objectives reward players who pay close attention to environmental details. Completionists have substantial reasons to search thoroughly, while more casual players can simply enjoy the satisfaction of uncovering unexpected discoveries naturally. Additional rewards tied to exploration strengthen replay value and make revisiting older locations worthwhile. Fast travel mechanics also improve the overall experience by making movement across the larger world more convenient. Exploration-heavy games can occasionally become tedious when backtracking becomes excessive, but Rex: Another Island introduces systems that reduce unnecessary repetition. Returning to previously discovered locations feels efficient rather than exhausting, supporting the game's emphasis on curiosity and discovery. Visually, the game embraces pixel art presentation that feels inspired by classic platform adventures without becoming trapped entirely in nostalgia. The environments remain readable and distinct, helping players navigate more challenging areas without confusion. Different regions establish their own atmosphere and personality, preventing exploration from feeling visually repetitive despite the minimalist presentation style. The retro aesthetic supports the gameplay naturally rather than existing purely as a nostalgic callback. Sound design contributes further to immersion. Music reinforces the adventurous tone while helping different areas establish their own identity. Combined with the large interconnected world, the soundtrack helps create an atmosphere where exploration feels meaningful and rewarding. The audio presentation complements the slower, discovery-focused pacing effectively. One aspect that may divide players is the game's willingness to leave progression less guided than modern platformers often prefer. Players accustomed to constant direction and objective markers may occasionally experience moments of uncertainty while exploring. However, players who enjoy finding their own path will likely see this freedom as one of the game's defining strengths rather than a limitation. Rex: Another Island succeeds because it understands what makes exploration-focused platformers satisfying. It emphasizes discovery over spectacle and rewards curiosity more than strict progression systems. The experience respects player freedom while maintaining enough structure to keep exploration engaging across its larger world. Shysaursoft delivers an adventure that captures the spirit of classic platform gaming while introducing enough modern conveniences to remain approachable. Pixeljam publishes a title built around movement mastery, environmental exploration, and rewarding curiosity rather than cinematic presentation. Rex: Another Island may not rely on flashy mechanics or dramatic storytelling, but its commitment to discovery and satisfying platform design creates an adventure that platform fans will likely remember long after uncovering its final secrets. Rating: 8/10
No se como he llegado a este juego. Pero resulta que es uno de los mejores plataformas 2D retro.
Fun, short adventure. Music is AMAZING. Graphics are nice and evoke old school PC gaming feeling. Some of the platforming is surprisingly challenging but respawns are fast and checkpoints close by so it's not bad at all. I can't prove it but I felt like there something wrong with jumping while playing on keyboard, so I'd recommend a controller for this.
Got it on sale, but honestly would have been worth the 3 bucks. Great soundtrack and a distinctive platformer in its own right. I recommend picking this one up!
