This might be the most frustrating gaming experience I've ever had. The camera controls are nonexistent, the combat is severely underwhelming, and the game gives little to no information when it comes to objectives. The "bosses" are far too easy to beat and tend to be on screen less than side characters like Richard (rip hero). I do appreciate the world building in this game, as it gives the player a lot of lore to read up on and makes a good amount of it necessary for completing the game. I also quite like the creature designs (and I love the characters already because I play Dead By Daylight). I think watching a lore video about RE1 would be a better use of one's time, but I understand the nostalgia people feel towards this game.
Some puzzles make you feel great when you work them out, however there are many that are needlessly frustrating requiring very precise interactions be it look at an item whole zoomed in or standing exactly where you need to for the item to work not a step to the left or right. The game feels like it is actively punishing you for playing it for the first time because your not going to know what you need to unlock X progression until you get there, run back to a chest to get the item you need just to move to the very next room to find out you have to go all the way back to the box again. Letting people drop non key items like herbs and ammo would go a long way helping with this. The controls are some of the most frustrating i have ever played, sometimes getting turned around 5-6 times in a row because of a camera switch. Aiming the wrong way because in the heat of the moment muscle memory take over and you move the joystick in the direction you want to shoot, not the direction you need to turn. Lastly the map could use a massive overhaul. Some way to point out Key locations after you have been there, like a labeling system library, office, room 003, just something you help remember what room is what. I also find the red and green colour system to be somewhat flawed. Hunting through room after room for the item you need to progress just to find a herb can be annoying, on the other hand having the map say a room is 100% complete just to find out tat the item that is required to progress the game in sitting in it is extremely frustrating when you’re skipping over the room in your searching because its saying its 100% complete just to look up a guide to find out its not 100% The game definitely had its highs unfortunately i find its old school game design lets it down in too many places to recommend.
The exploration and puzzles were fun, but the gunplay and camera system felt EXTREMELY dated. Wouldn't play it again but it's a solid game overall, especially considering how old it is.
