This is my new favorite VR horror game. It's a bit limited now in terms of depth/content, but I'm sooo swayed by the "VR vs. the Crowd" mechanic. It's a ton of fun to play this in a group setting. I recently did a stream of this game and it was a big hit with our viewers, thanks to the fun interactive role that up to 8 of them got to play. I'm hoping the developer continues to expand on this. Would love to see many more levels so that it doesn't become stale, and hopefully we'll see more ways that the crowd can scare the VR player. This has the potential to be something really special.
Good enough game but it's extremely overpriced considering the content, that's the only reason I can't recommend it. VR PLAYER: Basically the VR player just wonders around one of two maps, searching for dolls (that change their spawn location each round). Find a fake, you keep looking, find the real one and get to the exit. All the while there's a cheaty ghost lady that follows you around, but you can throw items to lure her away.. she also teleports to keep her close to you. MULTIPLAYER (phone players): The multiplayer is a nice addition but the trailer kinda lies about the excitement level. Basically you can have 8 other players goto a website and use a code for the match from their phones. You don't see the game from your phone, just a static map of the level. You then pick a doll to "trap" which literally is just a couple different "scare" options, and otherwise you have a power meter slowly building that you can exchange for different tiers of abilities like fog, a force push near the VR player and hands that reach from the ground to slow the player down. Honestly, phone players do nothing more than annoy the vr player, it doesn't really add anything to the gameplay, but of course it makes it fun since it's "technically" multiplayer and is a great social experience. REVIEW: Not worth it. I bought this game for like $4 thanks to my Steam winter sale tokens AND Reiko being on sale, otherwise the price is insane considering that this game has no replay value for a solo VR player. It's great with a bunch of friends and I wanna be clear that Reiko isn't a bad game at all, it's just overpriced.
The fact that it earned an award for most immersive game is well deserved. The main issue with playing on a single vr with multiple people is that it easily gets dull for the spectators but, connecting the audience with the VR player was a genius solution. There is nothing alike this game on the market yet. I hope this will be an eye opener for game developers and for those whom have worked on this game, keep up the great work!
Reiko's Fragments: The One Trick Pony. Reiko's Fragments presents itself as the horror game where your friends control the scares. This is implemented through a simple website connection, where friends gain energy to use a set of scares, each with their own price. This game is only exciting if you have no idea what you are going into, and the novelty wears off quite quickly. The only real "scary" entity in the game isn't controlled by players. The players act as nuisances to distract the player from the real threat. Only giving the players three abilities per map (the game only having only two maps, each lasting at most five minutes) really shows the VR player, even if they have never played the game before, the lack of power that the other players have. The game felt shallow. There was so much that could have been, but none of the potential was used in an exciting or scary way. Having the ability to slam a door in your friends face sounds appealing in a horror setting, but when all that you can do is slam the door in your friends face, and it has no consequences other than "scaring" them, it gets tired fast. If there was more synergy with the creature, and the abilities that the players are given to manipulate the world, this game would stand out as something that no other game can deliver on. Sadly, having only gone a small fraction of the way towards making a good product, this game only exists as a 10 minute cheap thrill that deserves a refund.
What truly makes this game is having a group of friends over to play against you on their phones. in short: its not worth the price if you are trying to play solo, BUT definitely is for a party game.
Experienced on the Oculus Rift with Touch Controllers
You can view my gameplay here: https://youtu.be/A5zqmU0CJrI I think this game would really shine if you have a group of friends over and want to see if you can scare the person with the VR headset on. Just take turns with the headset and see who can escape. It may also be a hit if you're a popular Twitch streamer (person who screams loudly) and want to reward your subscribing (white knight) followers by having them on mobile and try to scare you. If you scream loud enough, you can almost see the $$$ come in simultaneously. However, as a solo experience. This game is pretty lacking. It's fun the first time and the first escape. The graphics are good and the sounds as well. The pacing is good. The ghost patrols in unexpected ways. You have little "scare" traps that go off that increase the tension on that first playthrough. I thought it was cool that if you broke a vase on the floor to distract the ghost, when you tried walking in that area then it would make a sound of stepping on a broken vase. Unfortunately, there isn't much longevity to this game mode. There is only one map at this time. While the dolls change locations & the ghost varies its patrols, it all starts to feel the same after a few attempts. Not sure it's worth the normal price or sale price. I think I experienced everything the game has to offer in about 1.5 hours. There is full locomotion and snap turning is available in the options. You can play online or offline mode. There is easy, normal, and hard difficulty. Playing online with friends or strangers is pretty easy. They just go to the reikovr dot com website and enter the code that's on your VR headset. I had no problems joining. They can control some visual & sound effects on the phone (on a timer) as well as where to place traps. This game is in Early Access and the dev plans to add a new map and more modes. That is good to hear because this game really needs that. This game just needs more content to be more recommendable. Rate ?/10. I don't think it's fair to give a rating when I wasn't able to play with others either local or online multiplayer. So I will pass on giving a recommendation. Consider this a neutral recommendation.
I could not stand more than half an hour of this game. The premise is there, and a VR vs Crowd horror game sounds like a fun, unique idea. However, this game doesn't do a good job of executing that idea. I saw gameplay back in 2019, and having played it in 2021, it seems like not much has changed or improved. Movement and mechanics are just generally very, very jank, and I don't like that the ghost lady can just randomly get you through the floor if you go upstairs. Also, speaking of floor, I found myself either falling through it or levitating above it a lot. There's no option for smooth movement, and unfortunately if you turn Snap Turning off, you turn ALL turning off, meaning that your right stick becomes inoperable, so you're forced to turn with your head. Not an issue for a lot of people I'm sure, but I just personally am not a fan of that with how limited my space for movement is. With Snap Turning on, it's very disorienting as it constantly "blinks" or fades in and out of black every time you have to turn your camera. I found myself getting nauseated really quickly with that. As for the "crowd" part of things - the abilities are way too spammy. From what I could gather there wasn't really any cooldown on what crowd members could do, so every second I was just getting things knocked around and loud noises would constantly barrage my ears. Is that the crowd's fault? Partly yes, but the option to do that shouldn't be there to begin with, that is if you want the scares to actually be scary. I want to not expect when I'm gonna spooked, or have people actually plot some good scares for me as I navigate the house, not have them just click a button and spam a loud sound at me over and over again to the point I alt+f4. That's not fun to me. TL;DR: The game in its current state isn't worth getting, imo. It's way too glitchy, nauseating, and annoying to play. I understand that the game is still in Early Access, but things seem to have not changed much since its initial release. I'll take another look at this game in the future, but for right now, I wouldn't recommend it.
do not buy this. it's absolutely dead and has way to many bugs to justify purchasing it. devs don't care to update this game any longer so they don't deserve more money for this incomplete game
The game is very creepy and tense, and the graphics are good, but the actual game is extremely short. You basically walk around in a house or in a temple for 5 minutes, find some dolls holding an object, when you find the one that doesn't disappear, you have to go to a picture of a gate. That's it. Game over. I played each one twice and it took 25 min total, now there's no real reason to play this game again. It has a cool atmosphere but not worth more than $2 or $3 dollars in gameplay.
I wanted to like this game so much, it's a great idea but I don't think it was executed properly. The mobile portion of the game...it's not fun honestly. The PC section of the game (in VR) doesn't run well and to be frank isn't that scary even when Reiko is chasing you.
