Red Spider: Vengeance is a Hong Kong noir style visual novel inspired by many hong kong movies, especially Infernal Affairs series and Johnnie To's films.
There are 6 story routes with the different characters(approximately 105,000 words in total).
Yvet grew up as an orphan on the Mainland. She was taken in by a crime syndicate when she was young and trained as an assassin.
She killed many people, but she had her reasons for breaking out of that group. She escaped and married Francis, the leader of the Red Flower Society, an underworld mob that operated in Kowloon, Hong Kong.
One day, Francis was shot in a nightclub, and a doctor said that it was highly unlikely he would regain consciousness.
Yvet takes over his responsibilities and tries to find the person who was behind the shooting, with her bodyguards and a private detective she knew.
Multiple Choices / 6 Routes Total / Approximately 7-8 hours (Just over 1 hour per route)
The narrative of this game is a dedicated homage to numerous classic Hong Kong Noir films. Each character was written with a specific Hong Kong movie star in mind, imagining them to be the actor who would actually portray the role.
Details on which scenes reference which films, and which actors served as inspiration for each character, are all fully explained within the "Cyclopedia" included in the game.

It's a nice little straightforward narrative. I find people are a little too sympathetic for thugs and killers (but that's a stapple of the genre) and I'd kind of whishes we'd seen more of the 'bad' (bad_er?) guys honnestly, would have liked to see a little more of Lau and shrewd Lou. Things fall a little too neatly into place for my taste byt he end, gets a tad too sappy too. But hey, for the value I payed for it (ie nothing), it was still worth a playthrough
A game very openly and clearly inspired by HK Triad films, including casting actual HK actors (in an Imaginary way as the game calls it) as the characters. (though their actual faces are blank, but fans will know right away). Fans of HK cinema like myself will probably find this a fun, free game that though a tad too derivative of other works is at least very clear about those inspirations. Red Spider includes an entire trivia section devoted to explaining which actor, which film and which character inspired each individual in the game. Red Spiders earnestness makes the game come across much more as a genuine tribute to the people that inspired them, rather than a way to use likeness and previous work to churn out a game. The game being completely free, having the distinction of being a HK crime film visual novel, and it having multiple paths to go down (That do in fact offer actual differences) makes it very worthwhile. This is fun for people well-versed in the game's tributes, but it is also just a surprisingly lengthy visual novel at no cost at all ( I am 100 mins in and haven't done everything yet). Maybe it will inspire people to watch more films from HK, which in and of itself is a win in my opinion. The music in this game by the way is really quite nice, and visually though the blank faces is more a "we didn't use likeness" free card, actually add some distinction to the games feel. Check it out I say, it has someone using the Better Tomorrow theme as a ringtone which is an auto-recommend kind of. It has 2 free sequels I will also give a go at some point.

Exciting story. I wouldn't have minded paying for this game.
