Red Haze

Self-aware but not self-indulgent, heavy but meaningful and using repetition in a correct way, that is how I would describe Red Haze. This might be my favorite RPG maker game to date. It shows how despite having limitations in budget, it still delivered a great experience by making the most out of their creativity and limited resources. It is one of those games that you either love or hate. So, if this sounds like something up your alley, please try it. Before continuing, a short stop to reiterate a massive trigger warning. This game very openly deals and shows violence, drug use, nudity, sexual assault, prostitution, homelessness and many more heavy topics. I’m of the mindset that Yai Games tackled these topics with respect but still. This game tells its story with the premise that it will be played several times and made the most out of that. In theory each playthrough can be different, showing you new sequences and getting new endings. In practice you will get stuck and you will endure frustration, but just enough to immerse you in the mindset of the main character. Every time you make progress it feels meaningful and usually progress comes in chunks, with several roads opening at the same time. It uses repetition in a way that has meaning for the experience they are creating and it kept me engaged thanks to that. Still this is one of those aspects that you either love or hate, so keep this in mind before you buy the game. The tone of the game is a balance between creepy, depressing and funny. Usually at least two of those emotions are present at every moment creating a rather unique game. Although, one thing that can take you out of the experience is that for several endings you must get the main character nude and control her like that. Personally I didn’t find it to be meaningless but my wife didn’t agree, feeling it was a bit too voyeuristic without much reason. The art style is a very interesting aspect as it was what motivated me to play the game but also was one of the things that almost made me stop playing the game. All the scene illustrations are very well done, delivering on the emotions they should and without being exploitative of the characters. On the other hand, many of the sprites and animations feel way more rough, which at the start pulled me out of the game. In the end I thought the concept was interesting enough and ignored those thoughts of stopping. Funny enough, the more I played, the more I enjoyed the art in the game. It feels very unique to it and also shows how the developer did everything they could to make this game a reality, even if something wasn’t their forte. I love this game and hope it reaches all the people that are looking for this very unique type of experience.

虽然作者拖了如此之久才做了更新。 但是游戏本身质量还是不错的 各种隐藏触发以及各种道具用处在自行探索中一步一步挖掘 很多尤里卡时刻的存在 虽然游戏有的地方设置的确实难度颇高 人物移动速度实在太慢了，而且经常有随机性的突发事件吓你一跳 总体还是非常推荐游玩的 如果你是喜欢传统探索类RPG的话 可惜没中文

Jogo de maluco. Realmente um jogo de terror único, não existe nada igual no mundo de rpg maker. Red Raze tem uma temática muito pesada e quase tudo que acontece no jogo é perturbador, desconfortável e enigmático. Sempre tem algo a mais para descobrir aqui. A história é algo a ser decifrado, não é coisa fácil. Se você gosta de terror, recomendo muito.

Going back to edit my review as I actually went back to replay the game again and found a tedious chore rather than an enjoyable game. Perhaps the way that the developer have handled their other games/transparency on releases etc have coloured by view of their games in general. To have to start over when the randomly roaming enemies get you is just not a fun mechanic. And a lot of things are just pure luck if you make it or not. Which is perhaps fine if the experience is shorter. But when it can take upwards of 30 minutes to get to a point only to get royally screwed by a rather unreliable "random" pattern of an enemy, it just does not translate to a lot of fun. I just found no enjoyment returning to the title years later. It was tedious and felt half broken at times. It might be someone else cup of tea but it sure was not mine.

Decent horror game with a good degree of eeriness. I would recommend you get at least a couple of different endings as there are several.

I really enjoy this game, it makes me nervous and this is rare for a video game to make me fell unsafe It's really unpredictable and a bit rogue-lite ,and challenging at times , i would say that this is by far the best game from this creator.

Great Horror Game, Bit underrated and overlooked. but has a great soundtrack and story that you don't see in most games cause they're really afraid to cover that type of life style in a story. Drug Use, And Selling your body, causes, effects, addictions. it is something to be addressed. and this game does it pretty well in my opinion. Take it from a horror loving stoner germ. :3
