This game is the exact reason why Steam desperately needs a “Neutral” recommendation option. On one hand, this is Red Dead Redemption, one of the greatest open-world masterpieces in gaming history, finally playable on PC. The port itself is excellent, running smoothly and offering incredible nostalgia. If you have never played it before, you will easily get your money's worth out of the brilliant story and characters. On the other hand, Rockstar is charging $70 for a 16-year-old game that features zero graphical overhauls, no new content, and completely stripped-out multiplayer. It is a must-play title, but the corporate greed behind the pricing is a tough pill to swallow. Unless you are entirely new to the game, put this on your wishlist and wait for a special.
Before you even consider buying this game, I would honestly recommend just going straight to the second game as it is essentially the prequel. If you enjoy, or if you already had the pleasure of enjoying, the second game then keep on reading. The game is great and if you've already played RDR2, you should have greater insight into the relationships of the characters in this game. I personally played RDR1 first but I believe that missing out on the buildup of relationships from the second game made some conversations less meaningful to me. You can still get a good grasp of things playing through this game alone and it was obviously meant to be playable without the backstories of RDR2 (since it came first) but I still believe that it adds a layer of immersion. So all in all, the story is great, most likely even greater with the buildup from the second game. I won't say too much about gameplay because it is effectively just the same as RDR2 but with less options and lower quality (in most cases) and so if you liked RDR2, you'll probably enjoy the slightly lower quality respectives of the same activities here as well. Honestly, some time passed between me actually playing this game and making this review so I might be forgetting some useful distinction between this game and the second which this game might have done better. This is what I'll say; The game itself is great, perhaps not worth the full price but that's for you to decide. However, as I loved RDR2 I couldn't say that I've fully experienced Red Dead Redemption without also playing this game and in that sense, it is still worth the full price. If you managed to hold out through this entire review, you must have found it somewhat interesting so I hope it helped you decide if this is a game for you or if you'd rather keep looking. Good luck and have fun gaming!
Red Dead Redemption is a landmark achievement in storytelling, and revisiting it proves just how far ahead of its time this game truly was. You play as John Marston, a former outlaw forced by the government to hunt down his old gang in exchange for his family's freedom. It's a story about redemption, violence, and the death of the Old West, told with a gravity few games have matched since. Rockstar didn't just build a western, they built a eulogy for an entire era. The world itself is a character. From the dusty plains of New Austin to the lush hills of West Elizabeth and the war torn deserts of Mexico, every region feels distinct and alive, filled with random encounters and small human moments that make it feel lived in rather than scripted. The gunplay holds up well, with Dead Eye adding a satisfying layer of strategy to shootouts. But it's the quieter stuff, hunting, playing poker, or just riding across the frontier while a haunting score plays, that makes the violence hit harder when it comes. John Marston remains one of gaming's great protagonists: weary, morally complicated, and deeply human. His journey toward the game's unforgettable ending has stuck with players for over a decade.
What the ♥♥♥♥ is access code violation era? all I did was quit to desktop?!
In short: connecting to rockstar game services forever, can't get past their launcher. Longer: I've been trying to make Rockstar Launcher work for more than an hour at this point. Downloading the game took less time! When I buy a game, I just want to play it, not search for solutions on how to possibly make the company's launcher work. I was going to deal with an overpriced price for a fifteen years old game (if only it worked!), but I don't have it in me to keep trying to make their launcher work. I don't care if it's a regional thing or whatever, I just wanted to play the game I was excited about. Well, not anymore, I guess. What a bummer, honestly. I'm very sad (and tired, and mad) about it. If they weren't forcing their launcher, I wouldn't have that kind of problem.
