why it feels like a loli game than a record of agarest war come on why why ruin this series why yall turned this great series into a kid playground and ruined it
A Generational Tale of Love and Battle
Record of Agarest War Mariage offers a unique blend of turn-based RPG combat, generational storytelling, and light dating-sim elements that fans of the series—and newcomers—will find engaging. While it may not reinvent the wheel, it delivers a charming, content-rich experience with plenty of depth and replayability. Story & Characters The game follows Rain, the latest in a line of heroes destined to wield the legendary Ciel Blade and defeat the Archdemon. What sets Mariage apart is its multi-generational approach—players not only guide Rain’s journey but also influence his descendants through marriage and inheritance of traits. The narrative leans into classic JRPG tropes, but the character interactions (especially with the three main heroines—Felicia, Kunka, and Panina) add personality and humor. The branching paths based on romantic choices ensure no two playthroughs are exactly alike. Gameplay & Combat Unlike previous Agarest titles, Mariage opts for a traditional turn-based battle system rather than grid-based strategy. Combat is snappy and strategic, with a class system (Attacker, Defender, Supporter, Conductor) that encourages experimentation. Link Attacks and Sacred Arts add depth, while the Unification Rituals—where bonding with heroines unlocks new abilities—provide a fun (if risqué) incentive to build relationships. That said, the difficulty can spike unexpectedly, requiring some grinding. The skill progression system, tied to monster drops, occasionally feels tedious, but the payoff in character growth is rewarding. Presentation & Extras As a remastered PSP title, Mariage’s visuals are serviceable but show their age. The 2D character art and CGs are vibrant, though the 3D battle models are dated. The soundtrack is solid, with energetic battle themes and softer romantic tracks, and the Japanese voice acting adds charm. The Unification System and costume customization provide plenty of fan service, but the game’s heart lies in its generational mechanics and combat depth. Multiple endings and the ability to shape your heir’s abilities give it strong replay value. Final Thoughts Record of Agarest War Mariage is a fun, if occasionally uneven, JRPG that blends classic turn-based combat with dating-sim elements. While the difficulty spikes and grinding may frustrate some, the engaging character dynamics, strategic battles, and generational progression make it a worthwhile adventure. For fans of Idea Factory’s signature style—or anyone craving a lighthearted RPG with plenty of charm—this is a journey worth taking. Score: 7.5/10 A solid entry with fun mechanics, memorable characters, and plenty of content—just be prepared for some old-school JRPG grinding.
Record of Agarest War Mariage is a distinctive and somewhat polarizing spin-off within the broader Agarest franchise, developed by Idea Factory in collaboration with Preapp Partners and published on PC by Idea Factory International, Inc. Unlike the mainline Agarest titles, which are known for their slow, grid-based tactical combat, Mariage shifts its focus toward a more traditional turn-based JRPG structure while retaining the series’ signature obsession with generational legacy, romance, and inherited power. The result is a game that feels less like a strategy epic and more like a character-driven role-playing saga, heavily steeped in visual-novel sensibilities and long-form storytelling. The narrative revolves around a cyclical war against an Archdemon that continues to resurrect despite repeated defeats. Rather than portraying a single heroic journey, the game frames its story around the idea that true victory can only be achieved through legacy. The chosen hero must not only fight evil directly but also forge relationships, marry, and produce a successor strong enough to finally break the cycle. This premise places romance and interpersonal bonds at the center of the narrative rather than treating them as optional side systems. As with other Agarest games, player choices during dialogue and relationship events determine which heroine becomes the protagonist’s partner, and this decision directly shapes the abilities, stats, and identity of the next generation’s hero. Gameplay departs significantly from the tactical roots of the series. Battles are conducted through standard turn-based menus, with characters acting in sequence rather than moving across grids. Combat revolves around basic attacks, skills, and powerful Sacred Arts that draw from unique resource systems instead of traditional mana. While this makes the game far more approachable than its predecessors, it also strips away much of the strategic depth that longtime fans associate with the Agarest name. Encounters can become repetitive over time, particularly due to limited enemy variety and the heavy reliance on grinding to keep pace with difficulty scaling and unlock necessary upgrades. Progression systems are layered and often demanding. Characters grow not only through leveling but also through equipment crafting, skill trees, and affection-based bonuses tied to relationship mechanics. Much of the game’s power progression is locked behind item acquisition, which can require significant repetition of battles. This grind-heavy structure is one of the most common criticisms leveled against Mariage, as it can stretch the playtime considerably without always offering meaningful variation in gameplay. For players who enjoy methodical progression and optimization, this can be satisfying; for others, it may feel unnecessarily padded. Where Mariage truly distinguishes itself is in its emphasis on character interaction. Between battles, players spend a substantial amount of time engaging in dialogue scenes, gifting items, and triggering relationship events. These moments are presented in a visual-novel style, complete with anime character portraits, expressive CG artwork, and full Japanese voice acting. As relationships deepen, players unlock Unification Rituals—mini-game-like sequences that symbolize the strengthening bond between characters and grant powerful shared abilities. These interactions often shift in tone from serious drama to lighthearted or overtly fanservice-driven moments, which may appeal strongly to some players while alienating others. Visually, the game clearly shows its origins as a handheld title. Environments and character models are functional rather than impressive, but the illustrated CG scenes and character art are detailed and expressive, carrying much of the emotional weight of the story. The soundtrack supports the narrative well, alternating between somber themes during dramatic moments and more upbeat tracks during lighter interactions. Voice performances further enhance immersion, especially during major story beats and relationship scenes, helping characters feel distinct even when the plot pacing slows. The generational structure provides replay value, as different marriage choices lead to different successors, stat distributions, and story variations. However, the core narrative beats remain largely consistent across playthroughs, meaning that replaying the game is more about exploring alternate character paths than discovering radically new story outcomes. This reinforces the game’s identity as a relationship-driven RPG rather than a branching epic with dramatically divergent endings. Overall, Record of Agarest War Mariage is a niche title that strongly commits to its themes of romance, reincarnation, and legacy, sometimes at the expense of gameplay variety and pacing. It is best approached as a hybrid between a traditional JRPG and a visual novel, where character bonds and long-term inheritance matter more than tactical mastery or combat innovation. For fans of the Agarest universe, anime-style storytelling, and slow-burning, relationship-focused RPGs, it offers a memorable if demanding experience. For players seeking streamlined mechanics or deep strategic combat, it may feel like an uneven and grind-heavy detour, but one that still carries the unmistakable DNA of the Agarest lineage. Rating: 6/10
slighty worse than previous Agarest GoW game serie.
not my type of game, didn't grow up with PSP games, art is nice though.
