Rails Across America

This is one of the most interesting games I've ever played. You can raid rival companies, lay new track, upgrade locomotives, install signals equipment--you name it--if it's rail related, you can do it. I first played this when it originally arrived on the market. It's nice to boot up an old friend, once again. I just wish someone would recode this game so that it met modern visuals.

Oldschool. Surprisingly addictive. First and foremost: this is not a clone of Railroad Tycoon. You do manage a railway company, yet at a different plane - no pixel-perfect track building, no timetable adjustments, no real-time trainspotting. You choose which cities to connect, but the civil engineering details are left up to your staff. You still get to choose the rolling stock, track investment levels (signalling, double-tracking etc.) and the number of trains on every route though (albeit their consist is not up to you). Obviously, the big score politics and economy managemnt are up to you as well. The game is designed to be played in relatively short sessions, rather than as a neverending sandbox (although such a mode is available too). And... this is all fun! In spite of letting the micromanagement go, a lot of strategic decisions are still upon you. While the graphics are low-res by contemporary standards and the music is repetitive (at best), there's a whole lot of playability in it. Plus the difficulty settings are so flexible, you can enjoy the game regardless of how much of a tycoon freak you are (or, more often, are not). Just remember to read the friendly manual (available as a PDF once purchased). Oh and possibly buy it while it's discounted, the full price of €10 is a tad too much.

i like trains

This game is somehow worse than the store page makes it look. There is no way to adjust the resolution and many of the features in the game are simply nonsensical. I think they intentionally made it look like trash to remind you of the ACTUAL good game railroad tycoon....this game has none of the life RRT has and simply parrots the UI of it. I would assume its also a mobile port due to the extremely shallow gameplay.

This is an amazing game, graphics are top down but the gameplay is very fun and challenging for those who don't know, this game came out originally in 2001, another reviewer believes this is a mobile port, it is not, so don't expect it to be competitive with modern games

Still remember when I played this game on my mom's PC that ran Windows 98 as a kid. Maybe its the nostalgia, but I think this game still holds up.

I love this game. Bought it years ago and now have bought it on Steam. A simple game compared to today's standards, but I have so much fun playing it. Build your railroad empire, play against other robber barons, and even learn something about railroads and locomotives. I'm glad a bought it again.

I grew up playing this game. When windows 7 came out it would not work on the new system. I was very happy to find that they re-released it on Steam. It is just like I remember. great play. highly recommend
