This game was developed when Victory: The Age of Racing still around and interesting to play with other people. I thought it may be good, improvements from what Victory have. And after several years, it's still in the same state, barely got new update. It has similar gameplay with Victory, but with procedural sanbox. The game is barely playable, some stuffs isn't even finished. And sometimes it crashed. Well, it is normal for an early access game to have some unfinished stuffs and bugs. But it's not normal when it's already several years and there's no updates or improvements at all. And with $10 pricetag, there are plenty better game than this if you want to spend your money. If you didn't receive this game for free or at a heavy discount (like 99%) don't bother to buy it.
I have given this review a big update on 26 December 2018 as I now have a much better gaming computer and Racecraft has changed its pricing. First off, a warning. The developer of Racecraft is listed as Sandbox Games, but before then it was Vae Victis Games, and I'm suspicious that they're the same people. They previously developed Victory - The Age of Racing, and you can see my review for that game here. tl;dr They abandoned that game to work on Racecraft. This studio has no track record outside of these two games, so it bears mentioning. The rename is definitely suspicious. Racecraft is designed as an esports racing game powered by procedural track generation. Its gameplay is based in simulation with some arcade modifications to it, a formula that worked very well in Victory and has been refined in Racecraft. Driving feels just tight enough that it's not too stiff and the sense of speed is there. Past versions of the game had some crazy symbols on the tracks that a casual player like me couldn't identify, but those have been simplified now. There's an interesting pricing mechanic in play here. Everyone gets to play the eSports sections for free, but if you want to play the game on your own against bots, or if you want to create tracks or cars, you'll have to pay for the game. I don't think the value is worth the asking price of $20 but this is still Early Access and more features are planned. If the price increases, though, then it still won't be good. It's outside of the actual racing that Racecraft falls very short. There's a trunkload of issues here beyond the pricing: - The menus feel laggy and less responsive than they should be. I think this comes down to the animations. - There is NO MOUSE CONTROL in this game. It has been years of feedback on adding mouse control and it's still nowhere to be found. - Gameplay loading takes an eternity. You'll be sitting for a solid five minutes before you get to play. - There's no key binding for controllers to pause or exit a race. You must have a keyboard with you at all times - but of course, not a mouse, since there's no mouse control. - There are spots where the game will freeze or crash. It was more prolific in the past, including one instance where a fresh install of the game somehow corrupted my install of Steam itself, but those may have been ironed out by now. I've been updating this review for years. The developers burned me hard when they abandoned Victory, gave Racecraft to all Victory owners, and told me I did not have a computer powerful enough to properly play Racecraft. But even forgetting that, the game still does not feel polished enough for me to recommend it. It's free, so go ahead and give it a try if you're interested, but don't expect to be blown away.

Update : Jumped in for a few minutes to see what was added. The answer is.... virtually nothing. There is new things but god it's unimpressive. And now there is a paywall... A PAYWALL!?!? FOR THIS!?!?! Shame on you developers. I stand by my original sentiment. Should have stuck with Victory and its direction. Would have made far more money, have many more players, and mostly positive reviews. But nooooo..... you decided to destroy it all and then take a greedy path that you have not even earned! SMH I was such a big fan of you guys and your game during Victory days, pre-steam and into your greenlight. I can't believe the horrid path you have taken with this project since then. Funny because I thought you were fans of RACING GAMES. Yet Victory still offers far more racing than this title does or ever will, and for a small fraction of the price. This surely could not have been your original intentions, I suggest you go back to your old ideas and improve on them and stop bothering with this BS. I may seem angry, but in reality... I am very sad.... just sad about this whole thing. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Original Review : They abandoned Victory, which was a great platform for a game... to start making this game. Well we waited years for Victory to get good, and it really started to.... but then they make us wait years for this game to get less than 5% done like it is now. I really don't know what these devs were thinking. They can make all the promises they want but it is obvious at this point that this is only a casual vanity project to them. I am just so very disappointed because Victory was just starting to get good and then they abandon it just because they want procedural tracks. They could have made like 20 new tracks by now in Victory and had 10 times the game that they abandoned it as. Right now Racecraft is just a tech demo (in reality), and it has been that way for several years.
Interesting premise, seems like some great tech behind it. Been following the development of Racecraft since it started, and got in on the closed beta early on. Pros: -Great track generation system, they may all look similar but the procedural nature keeps things fresh. -Graphics seem pretty clean and slick. -Download size is nice and small, which is a nice change for modern racing games. Cons: -Performance is pretty poor. My system can handle most games on medium-high with 60fps. With Racecraft I get 25fps in the menus, 10-15fps when on track -Menu is absolute garbage. Reminds me of a console game ported to PC, circa 2005. Mouse is completely unusable and controls for navigating around are weird. -Lack of vehicle choice. Yes I get it's early access alpha, but despite the screenshots showing multiple cars, you can only drive one red one. -Painful car setup options. It's done whilst you're on track by pressing left alt, then tapping right alt to select the option, then holding right alt until your tweaks are just right. I've never seen such poorly implemented UI decisions. -AI cars are very floaty, they tend to drift over the track and never really have any feeling of being out there with TL;DR If you can buy it cheap, then get it, otherwise hold off on this one. It has a good concept but the execution at this stage of the early access is not enough to warrant a $19.99 price tag.
Free to?... stare at. Thats all you can do without paying the 20 dollar premium. I'm not joking either you can't build a car, you can't even do a race on the "free" version. I feel like this is a cash grab, and nothing but a scam, which makes me sad people would seorsly do such a thing.
Wanted to try this out, to see if : 1) My PC could run it smooth 2) My controller would work, or if I would require a steering wheel (which I don't want - lack of space) So I set everything up, it recognised my controller, allowed me to customise which buttons / analog controls did what. I then wanted to test it out, just so I could tweak sensistivities, graphics settings, sound settings etc. So I opted for single player. I didn't want to jump in the deep end on my very first play and wreck other peoples fun with me blitering about not having a clue with what the hell I'm actually doing. And also I would be constantly going in and out of various settings screens - both in game and in Windows. But no. With free mode you cannot access single player mode. Not even to try stuff out and make sure everything is set up to how I wanted. All I get is a prompt to "Buy Premimum" and me shouting back "I would if I could decide if the game was for me or not". I reckon I would of loved this game, and I would of payed for it once I had everything set up. Have the developers not heard of the old-school shareware system, playable demos and try-before-you-buy? At least enable single player, but with restrictions, such as a fixed number of laps and you can only pick a single "test track" - that would be better than what you have now. Dissapointed.
What an amazingly hot mess. I got this game for free after buying their first game, and it is just a gigantic downgrade. It's also got the hilarious idea that locking all single player content out for $20 is a great idea. I had to launch esports mode just to try and mess with settings. I say try because the in-race menu doesn't respond to controller inputs, and all other inputs are disabled in controller mode. It's taken two years and one abandoned racing game to get to this point. All of this for dynamic track generation that you'll only get to really mess with if you pay them $20. I can't even recommend that Victory owners bother to get the free premium because there just isn't anything of worth past the track generation.
I Miss Victory, Why you dont continue Victory instead of Racecraft?, Victory is a better game but well is your desicion, Also you need to pay a lot to have all the access and thats is not cool, its like Pay to win ;)
This game has some potential to be good, but it's not. Most of the content is locked behind payed DLC and the UI's are quite bad and confusing. The biggest problem is that, even on a good gaming laptop and this game had a lot of low fps moments and random freezes. The concept itself is good though, so let's hope they fix some of these problems for the complete version.
