A good overall "Paper's Please" style game especially if you can get it on sale. I love the niche it fills. It's a good 3.5 out of 5 stars which I will do my best to sum up.
Good things:
Smooth progression system, both free with progression and with purchasing
Good challenge level without being too punishing
Gun feels great to shoot. Yes this matters, even though it's just a Glock-style pistol. It's comfortably responsive.
Diversity that keeps things interesting in the campaign up until the initial ending
Lots to do as you progress. It's not just managing a checkpoint, you also have to look after who you let through and keep things operational.
Progression through research. I love the fact we have to keep an eye out for new symptoms unannounced and perform an operation correctly to identify what it is! It can be the difference between letting an infected in or having a perfect inspection day if you neglect it.
The meh:
Repetition after beating the initial campaign. Why am I instructed to kill someone I killed already?
Drone defense feels unfinished. Once you figure out the controls and weapons it poses no challenge, plus there is no way to upgrade it.
Some NPCs in the camp are immortal, others can be killed. It makes it feel like a decision was made during development that didn't get implemented to what was already in place.
Board objectives only last a day. This is a short coming as they have no chance to stack. A good way to keep us on our toes is to keep an eye out for objectives over the span of multiple days. Instead we get maybe two extra objectives per day that don't last.
The bad:
Infinite ammo? Really? It's a zombie plague outbreak with the world turned on it's head. At least make ammo have a price so you have a reason to be more mindful with the gun instead of just spamming it on rats.
Completely useless guards. All those guys with AR style rifles, yet only the checkpoint ones bother to shoot at infected that attack you if sent to quarantine or liquidation. Zombies can roam the camp and they pay no mind to them, and upgrading the front defense system is pointless. They don't do anything to the zombies outside the wall. They take up space and it's immersion killing when they don't do anything to what they're supposed to be defending the survivors from.
No weapons progression. You get a pistol that one shot's infected in the head and takes several shots to kill a zombie. Everyone else has AR rifles. Why can't we unlock one? Or a shotgun? Or a sniper rifle to deal with zombies outside the zone?
I will continue to add to this in the future, hopefully more is added because it's a great concept that's entertaining! It falls short in some areas currently however.
