About
Project Search is an atmospheric visual novel inspired by Chinese science fiction and Daoist cultivation of immortality. Set in the spectral landscapes of Linhai, Chongqing, and Dunhuang, the game invites players to explore parallel dimensions, ancient grotto-heavens, and transcendental urban spaces.
The protagonist, Qian Jiangmin, is a young scholar recovering from illness searching for his brother. His journey gradually reveals hidden grotto-heavens and mysteries about his double vision, propelling him toward self-discovery and transcendence.
You will take on the role of Qian Jiangmin with his HMD (head-mounted display) and drone, a young researcher on a quest to find his brother. Guided by scholars and Daoist cultivators, you will explore the mysterious underground realms hidden within Linhai's old town.
Navigate using WASD and arrow keys, with Shift to speed up and Enter to access a bird's-eye view of the level. Use the Spacebar to switch levels, and press and hold i to inspect specific NPCs and locations. Press R to restart the level.
Throughout your journey, approach and interact with dodecahedron objects and hidden features, activated by mouse hovering or clicking, to dive deeper into the lore.
Designed to be non-linear with no compulsory objectives, Project Search emphasises exploration and discovery. You can switch to 14 levels anytime.
Players are encouraged to wander, uncover hidden artefacts, and piece together the city's incompleteness, imperfection, and picturesqueness. There are no fixed goals—just the thrill of curiosity and adventure.
Project Search transports players to Dunhuang's ordinary yet metaphysical streets, a significant religious city with ancient cultural heritage in China's far northwest. You will experience the rhythms of everyday life while uncovering deeper spiritual and historical layers.
Another scene in the game is set in Chongqing, capturing the constant rain, mist, and post-industrial feel of the district adjacent to the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute. This environment adds a hauntingly surreal atmosphere, blending art with the urban landscape.
Most Project Search unfolds in the old town of Linhai, Taizhou, in Zhejiang province. This setting forms an urban techno-fantasy that links Chinese Daoist philosophies with modern technology, offering a spectral and uncanny vision for players to reflect Chinese cultural heritage.
Each level in Project Search combines art, myth, and contemplation, creating an immersive experience. This encourages players to distinctly personalise their reflections on spirituality, cultural heritage, and modernity.
Project Search is set in the same universe as the HyperBody VR game and shares NPCs and specific environments. Fans of HyperBody will enjoy exploring connections at the Garden Portal level, which provides an extended immersive experience across both games.

I've had to come to the conclusion that I'm simply not cerebral - or patient - enough to understand let alone play this experimental piece. In fact it's so impenetrable that I had to resort to ALT-F4 just to exit the game. Other controls are similarly unintuitive. I do appreciate the sentiment of an artistic think-piece . The visuals are hazy and ethereal and I'm sure full of meaning. But I can't work out what they represent or how to interact successfully. I couldn't honestly understand ANYTHING, sorry to say. As such I just can't recommend this but if you fancy yourself as a more thoughtful type willing to explore something different then perhaps you'll find something interesting and unique in here.

Çin ölümsüzlük yetiştiriciliğinin görsel bir romanıdır. Bilgin Qian Jiangmin, kayıp kardeşini ararken Linhai'nin eski kentindeki çökmüş pagodaları araştırır. Taoist yetiştiricilerin yardımıyla mağara cennetlerini keşfeder ve çift görüşünün ardındaki gerçeği ortaya çıkarır.
Robert Kurvitz, the writer for Disco Elysium, said in 2020 'Games spread like wildfire over the world, in a way novels never can. They cross national borders, languages, ideologies, age cohorts — in a matter of months. They change minds. They make minds . . . Consider dropping book-writing for game-writing. It’s worth it.” To me Project Search accepts Kurvitz's challenge. It tells the story of a VR drone pilot and his buddies investigating portals but does so in short notes punctuated by beautiful abstract 3D scans of Linhai's old town. Characters are fuzzy and abstracted, the world shifts and morphs. The creator of the game, Jiadong Qiang, attributes the game's abstraction and mistiness to the theory of "cosmotechnics" which is described as "the unification of the cosmic order and moral order through technical activities" by Yuk Hui. In short, a culture's philosophical outlook and religious cosmology can be found in the technologies they produce, pushing against the idea that technological development exists linearly. I think this is the appeal to science fiction here. As a Westerner, I don't have the Daoist background this game operates in, but my understanding is that the pagodas and steps the game takes place following are relevant, and utilizing games and 3D scanning is a way of tying modern technology to that cosmology, hence the cosmotechnic approach. Throughout the game you will encounter duality. Double vision, mirroring, even the dual languages of English and Chinese. Either way, the visuals are really gorgeous here. What a treat to look at for people who love to see how digital technology distorts reality, and likes to read about it too. "The rain looks like laser beams in my HMD" is bars. Highly recommend taking the hour to explore this world and thinking deeply about the cultural differences that may arise as you play.

I'm putting this as a "Recommend" because of the interesting thought, beautiful visual design, and fascinating narrative structure to be unearthed. However, I feel like a lot of people are going to be frustrated by the project's inscrutability, and some questionable or unfinished UX design. I feel like it could be greatly improved with some thoughtful interaction feedback mechanisms (sound response, mouse hover effects, confirmation animations) and addressing the input lag/invisible loading with animations. These don't need to even be technically robust; a simple idle loading animation goes a long way.

doesn't work. do not play.
Was zum Teufel....
