Better than Star Field.
omfg, this game is awesome mix of rpg and horror, which is itself a damn delicate pair of dice... when the first scene broke and I realized what was going on, I was all in until the end, and then played it all again, and then bought everything else packaged with it...
The combat isn't very good (a lack of enemy variety is where it suffers most), and I didn't like how the story was handled at all. This could have been a much better game.
Prey and Agnostic System Design
Immersive Sims rule, and I think a huge part of what makes them special comes from a design philosophy I call Agnostic System Design. Instead of explicitly designing how two specific objects interact, you design their properties and let those properties overlap. Prey is full of this. With Mimic Matter, you can turn into a coffee mug and squeeze through a tiny gap. The gap doesn't know about the mug, and the mug doesn't know about the gap. The mug is simply small, and the gap is simply narrow. The same applies to turrets. They don't need a special interaction for “Morgan disguised as a coffee mug.” They identify threats, and a coffee mug doesn't qualify. GLOO doesn't need to know you want to build a staircase. It simply creates solid surfaces, and the player can stand on solid surfaces. Fire doesn't need a special interaction with oil spills; it ignites flammable things, and oil happens to be flammable. The systems aren't designed around specific relationships. They're designed around general properties. Chess works the same way. A pawn doesn't need a special rule for capturing a queen. It captures whatever occupies a square it can attack. The queen is just another piece satisfying that rule. A tiny ruleset creates enormous complexity because the pieces are agnostic towards one another. Most games design the threads connecting objects. Immersive sims design the pins: the objects, categories, and rules that allow countless threads to emerge. That's why Prey feels so different. The world isn't constantly bending itself around the player with scripted interactions. A coffee mug is a coffee mug. GLOO is solid. A turret detects threats. An oil spill is flammable. The game doesn't need to know what you intend to do with these things. It just needs to provide the rules and let you discover what happens when they collide. You aren't designing every relationship; you're designing elements whose properties make relationships possible.
Awesome, awesome immersive sim, that for some reason went under the radar. One of the games that everyone should play at least once. Underrated gem. I will forever mourn Arcane's downfall. 15/10.
My goodness, this game. WOW. It is right up there with the original Systemshock 2 in creating a tight game world and letting you loose on it to find all its secrets. Combined with a delightful power curve and intriguing story, this was just an absolute blast. And whoever designed the intro / tutorial sequence, you actually had my jaw drop for a moment. Especially if some of the pieces fall into place later and make you go "Ooooooh!". Masterclass.
This is my favorite game of all time. Is a masterclass in emergent gameplay, art direction, cosmic horror and it's a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ blast. This game will reward you for thinking and paying attention. It's Dishonored + Alien and then some.
