This game for some reason has a convoluted character creation system which involves incredibly bad voice acting and forces you to run around and arbitrarily pixel hunt for some spot on the map to activate a cutscene I promise you will not care about. It seems like it might be promising if you managed to make it past that without falling asleep or dying of boredom, unfortunately I don't have infinite free time to find out and the dev and community are downright hostile to feedback so I won't be finding out
where to start heh, i like planeshift so im recommanding it but still gonna rant alittle, play at your own risk it does not hold your hand if your not sure ask ingame or discord so your not standing around too long, OK so 9 races all with their pros an cons very well done btw, when you start theres no quest markers so you will feel dumb trying to figure ♥♥♥♥ out remember ROOMBA!, i enjoyed what i seen but felt alittle lost, read everything some things wont show up in your quest log and theres no quest markers really hope they fix that, crafting crafting crafting it feels like it could be overhauled i spend more time trying to figure things out vs playing an to me thats a just waste of time, the game doesnt need more content it needs polish im gonna keep it installed an piddle with it but this games 20+ years old the younger generation is gonna have a hard time staying with the no hand holding make an iron man mode for the rest of us to help keep the others happy

the dev and their little nostalgia cults group wants new player to waste from weeks to month to be able mastery something and yes it is forceful if you want to makes your own high quality gears or better spells or higher DMG casting spells, some are mandatory to finish questline, to even able to do anything on this games first you need to do a bunch of quests to get skillset books, and to know where you are and all, you need to get a compass which is a quests that new players don't even know where to get that, by the times found out there is compass in the games would already got half of the world map memorized in heads, also to get a familiar, you need to get a golden ring, but where to get that? from killing high levels npc that would delete you in less than 20 seconds as new player unless mastery body development through /die, which should be brand as an exploit because the usual way you gotta do this cost over 500+ hours of healing yourself while being beaten by npc to leveling it up. mastery body development 50+ hours if use command /die constantly mastery mining 300+ hours mastery metallurgy 100+ hours mastery 1 out of 6 magic way 600-1000+ hours, without spamming spells on training dummy mastery melee attack 1000+ hours, less by 2x if use training dummy which sometimes get removed because no mastery allowed mastery repair armour 400+ hours mastery repair weapons 300-400+ hours mastery lockpicking 300+ hours mostly waiting for chest to respawn. there is more mastery in the games, but this is a few i can thinks of combine them all cost over 10000 hours this is without macroing. with macro you still have to manual making weapons or armour, and alchemy and a bunch of other thing. ----- edit: also as for RP events, most of these vets have no clue how to RP than forcing you into their low EQ conversation straight out of london 19th century or cartoon, i have hard times to even understand what were going on because there was no signal to rping or anything leading to rping than just typing to each other for 20 minutes to see who should be leading the way, then when there is something to be rping on, someone elses takes the stage. it's so dumb and cringe, but that what me get for playing a cultist mmorpg that doesn't allow criticism for their wrongness and believe they always right and they so confidence that their RP is good, is what got me on the edge to straight up not typing a thing in their RP events.
Don't let the Steam hours fool you, I've easily sunk thousands of hours in to this game.
An open development, forever completely free MMO
PlaneShift is not like other MMOs. Yeah, I know you've heard that one before... but this is actually true. This game has been in constant development and iteration for nearly 30 years, many contributors coming and going, but some have stayed on even today. Back in legacy PlaneShift, you could change a lot about the client, and the code (minus any assets, quests, and other game content) was open source. With the move to UE5, this is bit more complicated due to the UE5 engine license and I believe there are some marketplace assets that complicate making this open source. The open development concept has never gone away however, in fact I'd say it's become stronger. The currently sole developer, Talad, has been running daily streams on Youtube and Twitch showing exactly what he's working on, involving the entire community in the process, iterating on the game and adding new things, fixing others. Contributors have come and gone, and there are still more eager to do what they can for this project, although the project definitely could use more help! The game itself is great, but it's rough around the edges. Keep in mind that this MMO is completely free, not a single microtransaction, no subscription fees, no demos... free as in air. It's not an MMO where you leave a stinky review because there are bugs or incomplete features and then wait for them to fix it in 3 months, PlaneShift is not the project with that sort of backing. What you put in to PlaneShift will determine what you get out of it, whether it's playing for hundreds and even thousands of hours, doing all the quests, seeing all the sights, working on all the skills... or preferably in addition to that, volunteering your time and skills to help this game become the best completely free MMO. The Discord server is where most of this magic happens, with a channel for bugs, a channel for ideas (quite a few get implemented!), and a channel for those who are actively volunteering and contributing to PlaneShift beyond playing it. Did you know we have an open task list with many ways anyone, without any required skills or prerequisites, can contribute to the project? Many people have contributed to making this game what it is now, some have stayed on, some have come and gone, maybe even gotten careers in the disciplines they used to contribute to this project. All of these reasons are why my recommendation is conditional. I cannot recommend this game to just anyone, as the truth is, most gamers will not have the patience to see this game through with the cracks, bumps, and scuffs that give it its character and charm. Even fewer of those people will contribute much to it sadly, though I hope I am wrong on that. For anyone who wants to be a part of contributing to, and becoming part of the history of, the best completely free open development concept MMO running for nearly 30 years and still going -- whether that's as a player, contributor or both -- I absolutely recommend PlaneShift, and look forward to seeing you!
Game is still unfinished after 24 years of "development". Don't waste your time.
Never heard of this game, but it definitely feels like a game made in 2001. And guess what, I was close, it was actually 2002. And also, guess what, the game is still incomplete . 24 years and the game is still incomplete, still rubber-bands, and is completely devoid of players. And then on top of that, they decide to migrate it to Unreal Engine and release it on Steam in 2026? Why? This project should have been archived into an Open-Source Github Repo years ago. But I guess whoever is funding them is still paying enough money to keep the lights on
A lot of meat to the game once you start to wrap your head around how the game works.
everything seems quest driven, even most of the smaller interactions with the npcs, nice to be given challenges
A choice for those who want to immerse in game world and remember things in game instead of relying on UI
Great game. Fun to play and explore, no hand holding mechanics, no wiki's to help you, feels like the good old days again.
