Pizzeria is a very simple free clicker game that takes the idea of eating pizza and turns it into the entire gameplay loop. I start by clicking to eat pizza slices and slowly build up my progress. From there I can buy upgrades that make the process faster and eventually automate parts of it. It is about as straightforward as an idle game can get, but I actually think that works in its favour because I always know what I am supposed to be doing. There is no complicated story or big tutorial to get through. I can just start clicking and watch the numbers grow. The upgrades are what give the basic clicking a little more purpose. I can improve how quickly I earn pizza and eventually rely more on automation instead of constantly clicking myself. That gives me the usual idle game feeling where something that starts off slow gradually becomes much faster. I like seeing that progression, especially early on when every upgrade makes a noticeable difference. It is not a particularly deep system, but for a free casual game I think it does enough to make the first part enjoyable. There is also a collection side to the game that gives me something else to work towards. Random item drops can appear every few hours and let me expand my pizza collection, so there is a reason to check back even when I am not actively clicking. I like the idea because it gives the game a small collecting element instead of making everything about the main currency. There is also an achievement and the game has a colourful pixel style that fits the silly pizza theme nicely. It feels more like a quick time filler than something I am expected to take seriously. The biggest problem is the lack of depth. Once I understand the clicking and upgrading systems, there is not a huge amount left for me to learn. I am basically trying to make pizza faster, buy the next upgrade and collect more items. That can be satisfying for a while, but it gets repetitive fairly quickly because there are not many different activities to break up the loop. The random drops also mean that some of the collecting happens while I am away rather than through something I am actually doing in the game. I also think the free to play design needs to be considered. The game itself is free, which I appreciate, but it has in app purchases and a Steam item shop. That does not stop me from playing the main game, but it makes the collection side feel a little less important to me because some of the surrounding systems are tied into the wider Steam inventory setup. I would have preferred a few more gameplay upgrades or mechanics instead of relying so much on the idea of collecting items. The basic game is perfectly harmless, but it could have done more with its pizza theme. What I do like is how easy it is to pick up and put down. I do not need to remember a complicated system or spend a long time playing before I feel like I have made progress. I can click for a while, buy a few upgrades and leave it running while I do something else. That makes it a decent little background game, but it also means I would not recommend it to myself when I want something that demands much attention. Its strength is being simple rather than trying to pretend it has more depth than it actually does. Overall, Pizzeria is a basic but reasonably enjoyable free clicker. I like the pizza theme, simple progression, automation and collection system, and I think it works well when I only want something casual to play for a few minutes at a time. The lack of variety and deeper mechanics stops it from being one of the stronger idle games I have played, and the extra item focused systems do not completely make up for that. Still, it knows exactly what it is and does not waste my time with unnecessary complexity. For a small free game, I think there is enough here to make it worth trying, even if I would not expect to play it for a huge amount of time. Rating: 6.6/10
