A fun indie game, miss quite a bit of content, but has quite a promising feature. Maybe wait for an update or two before purchasing it or do it while knowing that you'll have a couple of our before you (as of first ea release). Keep it up devs :)
TLDR: Yes, I'm interested to see where this goes. ***Scroll to Bottom to See Updates*** This review is subject to change: Due to Steam only allowing 2 hours of gameplay before refunds start being denied; this review will be based off my first 2 hours of gameplay; and how I feel about it. Due to the gaming community having an issue with low gameplay hour reviews - they can go suck an egg, make it make sense booboo, I'm writing this for people who dunno if they wanna spend the money...not for folks who already think the game is perfect. The Story: 4/10 It's there in an unpolished, small team kind of way. It'll help you keep interested in the game but it's not something folks will be making lore videos about. The Ground Combat: 5/10 It has an Elden Ring vibe to it with invulnerability rolls but overall all it's a bit clunky and unrefined; especially the targeting system, because it will "let go" of targets too easily. You can easily get overwhelmed but you can just as easily goad 1 enemy at a time to come fall to your blade. The Naval Combat: 5/10 This rating is based off very little experience with the Naval Combat. Its a little slow and the fairly crowded waters will be a tougher enemy than your first enemy ship It would probably feel faster if... The Progression: 2/10 My least favorite thing about the game so far. Everything as of now including ship speeds (you start with 1 pretty darn slow speed) is soft locked behind upgrades and most the loot your getting is for story progression or management/survival purposes. For a small game and team like this I guess it works but some more interesting loot and more upgrade diversity would be a very good addition. The Ambience: 4/10 So far it's very sunny and "inviting" aside from the beginning sequence which I mean coastal shorelines are usually nice but there isn't much of an atmosphere. I do feel good just being in this world though with the chosen art style. The Mechanics: 5/10 The only major complaints bringing this score so far down is keyboard incompatibility, not having an easier way to swap gears or consumables and a low amount of gameplay settings to adjust. Total Score: 25/60 [Note these ratings are based off "Perfect" scores for AAA games] (which is why they are all low here) Conclusion: It just came out, is in early access, has more than 1 dev working on it, and is less than 15$; comes with a story, has progression elements, and decently entertaining combat. It's a YES for me but I always give devs the benefit of the doubt when it comes to early access (and this can often backfire) so take that into consideration. Suggestions: (Again, this is based off only 2 hours of gameplay, these might exist already I just haven't gotten there yet) -Loot diversity like sellable junk, equipabble trinkets, discoverable valuables, salvageable resources for additional upgrade materials, collectables, etc -Upgrade Diversity (different weapons/ship parts/etc with alternate stat/style options when upgrading) -Market Economies that give purpose to the excess Loot Diversity and allow you to gamble in the in-game stock market. -Skill Trees/Abilities (e.g. Buccaneer, Swashbuckler, Scallywag, Mariner, Marauder) -A First Mate Companion who can aide in naval and ground combat -Port Pillaging (increased destruction/loot) and a Reputation/Bounty/Wanted Level System with AI guards who will attack you if you break crates/attack chickens/steal coins/etc -Side Quests/Daily Quests to increase reputations -Storm Weather Systems for that all important ambience UPDATE 1: I put in another 30 minutes and found out that the game is VERY short right now, in fact it's mostly a demo that I paid for considering part of the closing quest dialogue recommends Wishlisting the Game...12$ for a demo definitely makes this an iffy purchase. I'm unaffected by it; I know some folks would be pissed. I REALLY hope this isn't abandonware but if it is the review will reflect it in time- this game has a great foundation, don't nobody need to let it go to waste.
This is a great game! You play as a stranded seafarer on an island, where you try to get back on sea and finally face "Blackwood", a ghost pirate of some sorts. It's quite short right now, but already is a lot of fun to run around, explore the islands, parts of the sea and towns. You also get to fight crabs and ghost pirates. Some riddles that are solvable and a bunch of platforming parts which are alright. Right now the sailing is super slow and a bit disappointing, but the devs already said that this will get fixed soon. Watch my full playthrough here: https://youtu.be/K9SGXcCh8PI
I really like where the story is going with this game. Feels like a real adventure. The combat is quite fun too. Mastering timing the dodges and parries while in a pile of enemies is challenging, but also satisfying. Some really great moments here. I'm a bit of a min/maxer so optimizing the movement, solving the puzzles, and finding upgrades was something I couldn't not do. Lol. I received a free copy because I helped play test. But I did purchase a few copies as gifts for some friends I thought would like the game.
Love this game so far.
