Personality Dating Sim is not a game, it's a Choose-Your-Own-Adventure e-book that's been dumped on Steam masquerading as a game. As a visual/interactive novel, this doesn't feature any notable gameplay, it's just a lot of clicking through badly written dialogue that would never have been accepted or published in print, which poses the question, "How did something this badly written end up on Steam?". To answer that question: When someone hoping to become an author is unable to get published in print, they spend $100 and dump their high school fan-fiction onto Steam, under the guise of a game. This E-book features Choose-Your-Own-Adventure elements where you make some decisions that don't do anything to change the fact this is just an E-Book. Nobody finished reading a Choose-Your-Own-Adventure book and said "Boy, what a great game I just played!". Because E-books aren't games. And neither is this. This remarkably badly written E-book has an equally terrible premise, the protagonist in this would-be novel dates various colours that represent personalities. Why not just go all zodiac while we're at it? So, no value as a "game", and even less value as a book. Visual novels/e-books are tedious at best... imagine the best novel you ever read, be that Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy or 2001: A Space Odyssey or Twilight (if you have terrible taste in literature), but then translate that to a format where the words dribble out and you have to click your mouse every time you wanted to read the next sentence, instead of just turning the pages. You'd think it was garbage. Now imagine that experience, but with much worse writing (because if these guys could write professionally, they'd be published authors and this would be on shelves in bookstores, and they wouldn't have to pay Valve $100 to self-publish this on Steam), and you have your average Steam e-book. You can get better quality books and comics for free online or from public libraries, or from bookstores for a fraction of the price of this "game". Steam isn't a comic book store, neither is it Netflix, it's for games. Your gaming rig is not a Kindle. It's impossible for me to recommend things to PC gamers that aren't really games. The poor quality of this E-Book is reflected by how many people spent time with it. At the time of this review, SteamDB shows the all-time peak reader number was only 5 readers. This is a remarkably low number, and now, the only reader activity occurs once or twice a month, presumably someone loading it up to see what it is then quickly uninstalling it. Considering there's over 120 million gamers on Steam and well over 50,000 games for gamers to choose from (over 9,000 completely free titles), the overwhelming lack of interest in this low quality E-Book is to be expected. Personality Dating Sim is relatively cheap at $2 USD, but it's not worth it. Given the defects and quality issues with the E-Book, coupled with the unrealistic price, this is impossible to recommend. You can get far better books for free at Project Gutenberg... or you could pay $2 for garbage. Decisions, decisions.
Profile Features Limited!
Valve have marked this E-Book as "Profile Features Limited" at the time of this review. This is usually caused by poor sales figures and low community acceptance for the E-Book (to date). Until this status changes, this E-Book will not give you +1 to your Game Collector badge count, appear in profile achievements or any other Steam meta-accomplishments, nor can it be displayed in some profile showcases. If these factors are important to you, it may be worth holding off before buying this E-Book.
Cool concept, but I wish it had gone deeper. For $1.50 it wasn't bad.
I liked it! I found the characters surprisingly three dimensional for such a short, cheap game (although they still weren't super complex). I found the ability to enter in our own responses interesting in theory, but lacking in practice, a) because the responses the characters give back are (obviously) canned, and b) you get the same questions over and over again, so there's not a point to typing your responses more than once. It would have been more interesting if the game gave different prompts per character, or if there were a bigger selection of random prompts any character could give you, so you have more incentive to actually use that mechanic throughout the game. I also think that the game missed an opportunity to have a story, which I think would have enhanced the overall experience. Online dating seems like an obvious backdrop this game could have used, for example. Overall I think the game is worth $1.50, but I personally would have preferred it to be longer/more involved, and cost a little more.
Uma experiencia simples, mas que abriu minha mente para um novo horizonte de ideias e opiniões.
pretty chill, quick experience. the brevity is a bit limiting, in the sense we don't have a huge chance to develop a meaningful understanding of the diff characters (it's a tad surface level), but there's value in short experiences and in the philosophical question posed. it would be fantastic to see a follow-up that truly trawls the soul, in sickness and in health, in poverty and wealth, before we commit to the image, and maybe even adding platonic relationships with other colors as well. finally, i'm personally most partial to blue, but green is good too but idk if i'd make them happy, ya know?
Very Simplistic in a bad way, only 5 characters to choose, very limited amount of questions you can ask, and after you finish 1 run and go to main screen you can easily guess which response fits each character. All that said it is very cheap so you cant expect much from it.
It's an enjoyable game with a unique approach to dating sims. I very much liked the concept and the price made it easy to give the game a chance. Getting to know all the characters in the intro was probably my favorite part, and the "Life Story" was cute but also very short. There are 3 endings for each character, but after getting the good ending for each one I didn't have much desire to 100% the game like I thought I would. I realized that my decisions didn't seem to have a huge impact on the outcome, so it was unclear of how to fail the relationship to get a bad ending lol. It's cheap, it's cute, it's unique, and it's a chill use of your time for about an hour. c:
I love the concept behind this game, and the fact that they use all pronouns (There are he/him, they/them, and she/her routes). They continue this trend of acceptance by noting hat kids are "adopted" as part of your life story instead of conceived, meaning the player's gender is not assumed. The character art, while simplistic, is well done and has vibrant colors that are pleasing to the eye. There is a very strong foundation to build off of. That being said, the game has many areas for improvement. If you play any route more than once, it quickly becomes repetitive and the "Life Story" text is very slow rolling with no option (that I found) to speed it up or skip through it. Each route is also very short with very minimal options, I got through about 6 endings in 45 minutes (with each color character having 3 endings). The non-character art also seems to include a mixture of clip art that has varying quality, some of it seeming very out of place next to the characters. Overall, I enjoyed the game for the time I played it and I don't regret spending the $2 to purchase it at all, but I also don't think I'll be in a hurry to 100% it or play all routes. Good for passing time and very quality concept that deserves more attention.
An interesting experience in expressing relationship in an asexual manner.
Despite being simple and short, the game brings an interesting proposal, I believe that was why I liked this game so much. I recommend it too, even more for those who like this type of game. Thank you for providing a different and completely charming experience! c:
This has a cool premise and setup, but it has some major bugs it really should have worked out before charging anything. I'm on a windows computer. If I go full screen, I can't get out of it - I have to run task manager and close everything. If I try to talk to colors individually, 25% of the time I get stuck on the text box - no matter the length of what I say, it won't let me enter it - either by clicking, hitting enter, or the touch screen on my laptop. It's impossible to progress and there isn't any obvious way to save or return to menu once you have hit one of these buggy screens without losing all progress. TLDR: Unplayable with bugs, but has potential.
