Huh. What a curious game. When it works, it's okay. But then again, it also has an achievement called "404" that you earn from PalmRide not being able to connect to its servers. There is a recurring issue with all of these retrowave stylized games which is that, once the dev manages to incorporate the road, the sun, and the Japanese corporate buildings... then comes the question: what does the player actually do in the game? Well, PalmRide certainly isn't the one to answer that.
Boring unless you enjoy racing in a traffic jam. At first I hated how often I was dying and restarting but then I realized there's pretty much no difference. Highly repetitive with surviving being the only goal. No reason to go fast either, safer to putz along so you don't slam in to the hazards all over the road.
Really enjoyable retro arcade game. The achievements are some of the most creative I've ever seen and most of them were really fun to unlock... but some were.. insane, to say the least. You have to mess with the game files for those becaues otherwise it is insane. The music is great and the best part is that you can import your own music! There are leaderboards that reset every day so you can have fun with friends if you can get people to play this.
With its chic rhythms and enchanting visuals, Palmride offers you the most sensational rides on the roads of retro vibes ever.
When I say I love this game, I mean it :). Wonderfully retro and the music is top!
Pretty cool game, but with some very bad game design choices. The driving itself is very pleasant but all the power-ups are simply useless for various dumb reasons. In fact I'll start with the negative, in case it helps getting a sequel that fixes all this. There's shooting in the game, but it's assigned to the first right trigger on the gamepad, while acceleration is on the second right trigger. So it's simply impossible to shoot while accelerating unless you want to keep your hand in a weird position during the whole race. And there's no option to change the controls. Shooting should be on the A button! In fact the whole button layout is a bit inconvenient. The turbo is on the first left trigger, while it should also be a face button. There's a power-up to become very big and invincible. Pretty cool-looking at first, although it doesn't make you destroy the cars you run into, which would have been fun, and most annoyingly you can't collect other power-ups while big. The problem is that there are parts which require this power-up, otherwise you lose. So they've been placed just before those sections so that you can't miss them. But if you already have this power-up activated, you won't collect another one, meaning that you can run out before the section ends! This happens constantly and is very annoying. So in the end I simply avoid them just in case they make me lose. What was supposed to be the coolest power-up is actually something you avoid collecting. It's a bit nonsensical. There's also a power-up for the turbo, but the car doesn't seem to go faster. So I don't bother taking it either. It's ok since the game is already pretty fast. Actually the only thing I collect is the one that protects against one damage. Although, even this one is slightly problematic. I think we should start the race with at least one or two free hits, because it's very easy to take a hit before even collecting a single one, so it makes some races a bit frustratingly short. Now the positive, and thankfully it's extremely positive. The races are just beautiful. I'm used to that 1980's visual style in racing games and this one still manages to have something special. For instance the wave of the music is displayed as if it's part of the background image. And there are all kinds of 3D shapes, sometimes borderline abstract and psychedelic, which go very well with the soundtrack. Speaking of the music, it's obviously pretty cool too and the style fits perfectly. There aren't many tracks though, just three different ones then a track which mixes all three. In fact, in my opinion this track should be the whole game: instead of endless tracks, a long race which changes the scenery like in Outrun for instance. Because here there's not enough change in scenery for a single track to not become repetitive after a while. If a sequel ever comes out, that's probably what they should aim for. Still, pretty pleasant game despite all this.
