Out of the Ocean

A very good, very cute love story! Complete with a rare poly ending that more love stories should have! Highly recommend.

If I had to resume Out of the Ocean in simple words, I would call it a modern fairy tale, and I can't help but to think it was intended as such. The VN oscillates between romance akin to old school chivalry and very up to date fourth wall breaking or jokes. It is a very pleasant and refreshing experience, with a story which can be both very goofy and very serious, without losing much consistency in the process. The only thing I can complain about it is that the story has some convenient shortcuts, but well, that's both barely annoying and a proof it's a perfectly legitimate fairy tale ! I warmly recommend it.

[i]Out of the Ocean[/i] is a really sweet and light yuri game, from the writing to the music to the art. I was excited for this as a rare ebi-hime game with choices and branching paths, and it absolutely did not disappoint! Though I had a clear favorite of the two female love interests (Misuzu <3 my queen), I found it well worth reading all of the routes. Nerine is still an incredibly likeable character (impossible not to love such a sweetie!) so I enjoyed both her solo route as well as the poly route! It's harder to find polyamorous romance, especially stuff that isn't 'harem' styled - I don't mind harem stuff per se, but it can get a little old and I think is sometimes a lazier attempt at portraying polyamory as opposed to a proper, fleshed-out relationship between multiple characters like we see here. MIsuzu's anxieties and her jealousy are a common thread throughout all the routes, so it was really sweet to see her with an affirming character like Nerine who loves her so honestly. The side characters are all fun too: Shoko is a great mother figure for both Asuka and Nerine, and I adore Marina to pieces (she's just so hot lol.... can't help myself). Overall, it's a well-rounded cast with great interactions (not to mention the setting! Longtime ebi fans will meet some familiar, or perhaps future, friends here and there ;w;) The writing alone is enough for me to recommend this VN, but the gorgeous art on top of it all (various outfits for all of the characters, as well as many BEAUTIFUL CGs - Misuzu's intro CG, omg) makes it an even easier rec. There's absolutely everything to gain by giving this VN a try!!

As much as I love Ebi's stories, this one didn't completely satisfy me. The multiple endings imply less desirable endings, and that bothers me a bit. Ebi's stories are light and fun and never fail to make my heart skip a beat, but multiple endings create some "obstacles" that ruin my experience. The length is okay; I'd call it long, since it took me 30 hours to finish it. I'd like to read more scenes of everyday life. 8/10
