oniria crimes is an isometric voxel-based adventure, so it ticked multiple boxes for me right from the get-go. and it immediately started ticking me off with annoying text display sounds... the intro is a huge info dump, but here's the gist: we're in 2060, cities underwater, people communicate through dreams. they even created an oneiric city with many guilds for all their woolgathering needs, essentially second life but with less porn (or more, there's some in the library). elections are coming up and there's tension between the governing guild and the kabu (natives), not to mention all the crime. and this is where you get into the picture: as agents working for an unaffiliated organization to keep things under control and find out who and what and why, re: crimes. there are 6 cases in different locations with different mechanics, and of course the overarching narrative gluing things together. despite all the seriousness on the surface, serial killer, politics, all that, it's a lighthearted and funny adventure, not something gritty. I found some of the writing cringey though. crime scene investigations are done in holographically recreated locations, and since dead bodies dematerialize quickly, unlike in awakeland, you gotta talk to objects because everything's alive and connected in oniria. relevant findings are collected in files, but you can click things over and over to remind yourself (if they have nothing more to offer, they get a different silhouette). the game even lets you skip the whole follow-up dialog the second time. it's not all clickety-clicks and reading, some items present a puzzle. hacking a computer is done via a randomized 3d minesweeper, for instance, then there's a puzzle box, some deciphering, and so on, and a hint button is usually available. dialog preceding a puzzle can't be skipped with a single click, so you can't easily get back to a puzzle later. cases aren't too long, but some of the puzzles are tricky. the emblems in case 3 and the constellations in case 6 come to mind, and I looked up the final 2 digits in the library. didn't feel like messing around with an actual qr code, as neat as the idea is (and as broken the game will be when the website eventually goes down). when you're done snooping around, you have to decide who's guilty and innocent by choosing two statements from the notes. I love deductive stuff, but sometimes the choices weren't that obvious, for me anyway. no need to perfect everything, good enough is good enough to progress, but there's a restart button if you're not satisfied. not sure what happens if you get none of the deductions right in a case, but there are alternate endings if you screw up things in the last one. it drops you back to the menu after and you can try again. controls are very simple: left click to select stuff, advance dialog and make text appear instantly, right click for other functionality based on the current situation. esc skips things, space advances text as well, which is shown with annoying text display sounds that can't be turned off, but at least it's not gibberish and it's 'only' for dialog, whatever the items have to say comes up instantly and quietly. there's a text speed setting (wouldn't mind the fastest being instant and silent), separate but buggy volume sliders (they ignore cutscenes and don't even get saved between levels, let alone when you quit) and language options, also while playing. there are remnants of spanish text in the english version and it gets worse as you progress, plus resolutions and windowed mode are only accessible through the unity launcher on startup, lazy. progress is just as lazily stored in the registry and the game saves constantly and when you quit, but the intro and cutscenes have to be skipped every time, which is also annoying. I had issues with cutscenes playing really slowly or not at all, especially the final few, but that's probably my old pc being old. clicking 'continue' in the main menu lets you restart the current case, otherwise individual cases can't be replayed, not even after finishing the whole game. in the final area quitting midway didn't save everything properly. my notes were kept but I had to re-examine most things and even re-do the constellation puzzle with the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ owl interrupting all the time. turns out, it was unnecessary, as they were already marked found in the save, but I still ended up with a few misses, probably because daytime stuff didn't get saved and was unavailable during nighttime when I quit. and I still got a perfect, just like in the library after missing a dozen of the nearly 800 books, while in case 5 overlooking a single item was already too much. all in all, it's pretty good but really buggy. the original price got halved permanently less than a year after release, so if it was more polished and bug-free, it would probably be worth it for 10 bucks for some, but since it's not, definitely wait for a sale, and until then you can try the demo.
Information / Review English
Oniria Crimes is an Adventure / Puzzle / Detective game developed by cKolmos Game Studios. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2322697681
Gameplay / Story
The story of Oniria Crimes takes place in a distant land called Oniria. You don't know this country and can't find it on the map? No wonder, since this is even older than the pyramids .. It is the land of dreams. The protagonists are a bit reminiscent of Sherlock Holmes, as there are 2. Indeed, Commissioner Santos and Inspector Torres need your support. The story also consists of a total of 6 chapters, in which it is necessary to record and carry out testimony in the manner of all Holmes witnesses, to investigate various / hidden clues and to combine / decipher them, to solve puzzles and to pursue a complex plot. The whole game is accompanied by appealing progressive music, which rounds off the whole thing and gives it its own touch. As for the story itself: A city without any special incidents over the years, or rather the capital of Oniria. The events happen shortly before the first elections. A serial killer is up to mischief and disturbs the peace of the city. The investigators must not take too much time with the investigation, because some clues in the dream world quickly disappear. You can use objects at the crime scene or you can ask witnesses who will help you to reconstruct what happened. But if it were only the murders, several guilds have formed and joined forces that pull their ropes and strings from the underworld. So with all dreamers are in danger .. and you come into play to fix this again. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2322697722
Pro
+ well-inspired main story with depth + strong protagonists + 6 chapters to master + Voxel art visuals + Dialogues with humor + Play with several mechanics and key moments + fitting and dark music at the same time + Achievements
Contra
- Puzzles could have been more difficult
Conclusion
Oniria Crimes offers you a cinematic, staged Story with many Twists that are surprising, but at the same time Reveals a Conspiracy. Crime and puzzle fans should definitely grab it here. Clear buy recommendation. PS: First of all, many thanks to the developer who provided us with this key for the group.
Information / Review Deutsch
Oniria Crimes is an hybrid of Point and Click, Visual Novel, Crimes Investigation of noir style rendered in amazing voxelized rooms. You know, like pixel art, but in 3D. It is a true evolution of Point'n'Click Adventures. It is set in a universe where it is possible to visit dreams in a lucid state. Half oniric, half cyberpunk. It is written with care and love. The lore of the game covers from literature to Japanese culture. That doesn't mean that this is a serious game: on the contrary, the text travel from deep and intelligent to really funny. Because, you know, in this dream world, every object is a sentient being, and most of their lines fall on the funny side. The gameplay is really smooth. You click on every object seen on the screen to "interrogate" them, so they can give you clues on each crime scene. Those clues give an hypothesis on each suspect, so in the end, the player choose who is guilty, who is innocent, and the how and why of the crime. Inspector Torres will review the solution proposed telling if we are right or if we are wrong. To make the long story short. It is a straightforward system for a game of crime investigation that simply works! You know... there are several games out there that attempt and fail to provide that sense of investigation. So it is good to see, at last, a game that gets it right. I will conclude by praising the soundtrack. It is just a love letter to the sound of classic point and click Adventures. It is just the proper detail to bridge an adventure of the XXI century with the legacy of the genre. Highly recommended.
I'll be brief. - Game's intro is a narrative mess that raises more questions than it answers. - Detective work consists for about 90% of just clicking on objects and then waiting for two characters to stop talking so you can keep playing. - Said dialogues often contain lengthy exposition dumps, featuring dozens of names, factions, locations and events that you can't possible keep track of and that are not relevant to the case. - Needlessly obtuse puzzles. The puzzle box in Case 2 is a prime example of how not to design puzzles. - The player is never informed that crime scenes can be rotated. I didn't learn this until I saw it in the game's only guide after I'd already given up on playing the rest of it. That really was the final nail in the coffin.
Oniria Crimes is a strange and interesting game from Ckolmos, a small studio from Madrid, Spain. If you aren't too fussed about expecting a meaty main story, there is plenty of vibrant voxel art and deep lore to make this game worth playing. This game is set in Oniria, city of dreams, a sort of shared-consciousness virtual reality world inhabited by people in their sleep. There is plenty of talk about "awake-world" in the game, but we never see it; the full game is spent exploring this dreamy urban environment. The lore of Oniria runs very deep, and a big part of the game is figuring out just what this world is, how it works, and what makes it tick. Unfortunately, Oniria is also a dangerous place, and tensions are very high due to an upcoming election. There are a large number of guilds with strange names names like Triple Star, Magic Fist, and PictishCobalts that all have their own agendas and are all at odds with each other. Violence is starting to become more and more common in Oniria, and the corpses are starting to pile up. You play as inspector Torres, a newbie "Rounder", whose agency is called in to investigate these murders. Gameplay in Oniria Crimes unfolds over six short cases. In each case, you are given a richly detailed voxel crime scene to investigate. In Oniria, there are few human witnesses to a crime, but by interrogating objects themselves, you can work out who the criminal is. By clicking around the room, every book, every stuffed animal, every drinking glass will provide testimony. The chess set will tell you who last played it, the suitcase will tell you the porter was acting shifty, the video game will gleefully (but not truthfully) declare it witnessed a shooting. Every case has dozens (and one has 700+) things to investigate. Present in each crime scene, you will also find one or two major puzzles. These are quite varied and inventive, and range from a hacking puzzle similar to a 3D minesweeper, to a cypher-style codebreaking puzzle, to a Japanese-style puzzle box. One puzzle even involves scanning a QR code which takes you to an external website with a cryptic clue. I loved the puzzles and looked forward to the new challenges each case would present. Each scene also tends to have some type of gimmick; for instance, one requires using your character's flashlight to search around in the dark, and another allows you to combine related objects to locate new testimony. As you click around the room gathering testimony for a case, three subjects will emerge, and out of the dozens of testimonies you read, you will log six bits of evidence per suspect. To solve the case, you need to point out the guilty party and the two most incriminating bits of evidence, as well as the two innocent parties and the two most exonerating bits of evidence for each of them. This is easily the most frustrating bit in the whole game; while the solution is apparent, picking out the right evidence requires a lot of guesswork/trial and error (at least it did for me, you can just use the Steam guide I wrote, if you'd like). Oniria Crimes works really well as a dip-in dip-out sort of game. Each of the six cases are completely unrelated to each other, though towards the end, there is a bit of an overarching story which loosely ties them together. I found myself doing a case, putting it down, coming back in a few days, and doing another one. The overarching story is fine, but not great, and involves one villain who is stealing valuable artifacts to do some type of evil ritual. The conclusions of each case are also a little underwhelming. However, the investigations are tons of fun, the puzzles are interesting, and Oniria itself is FAR richer and more memorable than any of these little stories inside of it. I also want to shout out the soundtrack, which is a 100% perfect fit for the game in my opinion - it fits so well I would believe it if you said that the soundtrack came first and the game was built around it. Overall, I am really glad I bought Oniria Crimes, am enjoying the time I am spending with the game, and I would definitely recommend checking it out.
