About
Hey folks, Jason Rohrer here. After 8+ years of existence, the Discord server had devolved into a very unfriendly, negative, and drama-filled place. It had gotten to the point where I didn't even like stepping foot in there myself, and every time I did, I regretted it. I considered just closing it down entirely.
I recently took some very big steps toward cleaning it up, appointing a new outside moderator (a personal friend from real life who has a very level head), and banning anyone who was continuing to be unfriendly and negative (including some of the old moderators, some of whom who had become ringleaders of negativity and personal attacks).
Of course, the people who got banned are upset, and (surprise!) they are review bombing the game.
But it's pretty amazing: in just one day, the Discord server is already much more calm and friendly and positive. I'm sure game sales will be temporarily affected by this review bomb.... but... well... something had to be done.
Thank you for taking a look at One Hour One Life anyway, which is a deeply personal game that I sunk my heart and soul into.

Hey folks, I'm Jason Rohrer, and I spent more than 6 years making One Hour One Life. I did everything myself---I drew all the graphics on paper with pens and markers, I coded the entire engine from scratch, I composed and performed all of the music*, and I even made all of the sound effects. It's a very personal game, and it's really unlike anything else that's out there. It's also a huge game---over 4,400 fully interactive, craftable objects and over 2,400 hand-drawn sprites. The game was initially released on my own website in February of 2018 and then later that year on Steam. Over next few years, I released 154 weekly updates as I aimed for my goal of making the largest, most comprehensive crafting game in history.
Okay, so what about the game itself?
First of all, you only live for an hour, where each minute marks a passing year. You join the game server as a newborn baby, and some other randomly-chosen player is your mother. You depend on her for your survival. And why will she be willing to waste her valuable time and resources to keep you alive? Because she's going to die in an hour just like everyone else, and if she wants what she accomplishes in her lifetime to have any meaning, then the next generation (aka, you) is her only hope. And if you survive into adulthood, you may get the chance to have babies of your own---other players, just joining the server---and those babies will be the next generation that gives meaning to your own life accomplishments.
Across this ever-growing family tree of generations, players are collectively conducting an enormous project: they are rebuilding civilization from scratch. The online game world starts out as a near-infinite expanse of wilderness (four billion meters wide from east to west, and four billion meters wide from north to south, with a total surface area of over 18,000,000,000,000,000,000 square meters, or 36,000 times bigger than Earth). The very first player to join the server is Eve, and she starts out in the wilderness as the root of the family tree. Eve and her immediate offspring lay the foundation for the future civilization, perhaps making a few primitive tools, cooking basic foods, and starting a small farm as they scrape out a meager existence before dying. Future generations will build on this primitive foundation, eventually mastering more and more advanced technology, including domesticated animals, metal working, permanent buildings, engines, transportation networks, photography, electronics, and even interplanetary travel.
But as real-life history has shown, civilization is fragile. A generation that is born into the lap of luxury---on the backs of their ancestors' hard-won accomplishments---can just as easily squander their inheritance as build upon it. Key resources run out over time, so careful management, planning, and organization are necessary to prevent an inevitable collapse. Thus, the game graduates from the individual challenge of primitive survival in the early stages to a group organizational and leadership challenge in the later stages. How do rules and procedures for group survival propagate across multiple generations? What did our great grandparents have in mind for this village?
The main mode in the game involves being born as a helpless baby to another player as your mother, but you can also play with your friends as twins, triplets, or quadruplets. One baby is hard enough to take care of---any mother that can successfully take care of quadruplets deserves the eternal gratitude of you and your friends.
All of this is happening on my own centrally-managed, persistent servers, and your purchase includes a lifetime account on these official servers. After you buy the game, you can instantly connect to this world with no configuration or server set-up. It all just works. You also get access to the full source code, including the server code. Technically-minded folks can run their own private servers, or even use the powerful content editor to make their own mods.
And once you master interplanetary travel in the game, you will gain access to Another Hour Another Planet, which features an alien world where all game elements and artwork are made entirely by the community.
I hope you'll join us as this sprawling civilization-building experiment continues to unfold. Many tens of thousands of players have already collectively lived over 3.7 million hours in this endlessly-changing world so far. Over the life of the game, he average playtime for each player has been 22 hours, with over 1100 players logging over 500 hours each.
No two lives are ever the same, and a new story always awaits on the other side of the [GET REBORN] button.

I GOT CALLED RTRD 4MINS IN AND WAS NAMED PENNY WHICH STOOD FOR PENIS
As a multiplayer game, your experience does depend on other players' ability to play fairly. But I have only run into a single person over five lives who was rude - everybody else has been so kind and welcoming, and very willing to help new players as well as build relationships with you. Even if you're only there for an hour, that hour really counts, and you find yourself making new friends learning new things together - and if you decide to be reborn and play again, there's a chance you get reborn into the same server as a child of your own descendants, and get to see them build on what you started in a past life. This is very fun to play, and quite calming - at least until a baby pops out of you when a new player joins the server and you have to switch gears to childrearing while you teach the new player what to do and how it works! That can be a bit stressful, but still extremely rewarding when you reach the end of your life and they're stood there with you wishing you goodbye and you see the legacy you're leaving behind.

Im learning the game got about two hundred hours. so im about to start making an engine in game and some guy tells me to not touch stuff if i dont know how to smith. i tell him i do. He then proceeds to talk trash, then got the barron to exile me telling ppl im bad, then he kills me! Now i cant play with gen pop cause of some soft minded ppl in a game where community is supposed to be number one. tbh this game is cool for a bit. The people left in game are either two things. new to the game trying to learn or a vet who may have you exiled and killed for trying to learn new things or just making something you already know in a fifteen dollar game
dont buy this game, play two hours one life instead.
We need Chinese !
extremely clunk and (annoying) tutorial and controls (EVERY action is left click, you cant move with wasd.) racist people yelling at community about being "inferior" horrible controls and clunky. tried to give it a chance, but its painful, 1/10 this game, horrible experience the developer needs to do better its obvious he didnt play test his own game.
I can no longer recommend this game. Not necessarily because of the developer's views - as long as he isn't using my money to do nefarious deeds, I don't care about his views - but because hardly anyone plays anymore, and it's a very different game with only 10-20 people playing. Even before people starting boycotting it, for most of 2026 some griefers were going around periodically to kill off any non-white families, which was not a good time. If you do decide to play, steer clear of the discord or community. Do the tutorial, stay anonymous, and only talk in game. You can figure out plenty using the in game recipe system or asking in-game for help. You can work together with people and build a little town, feed each other, explore. Back when more people played, there were also interesting inter-family dynamics, with trading local goods, but now there's usually only one family. It is an interesting game, with social dynamics at play, and an impressive one-developer feat from graphics to sound to game engine. Families would come and go organically, with people working together or in opposition as they choose, with construction or destruction the natural result. Unfortunately the dev didn't apply that same organic approach to the out-of-game community, causing it to collapse. Tech note: the game works fine on Linux
I highly recommend using mods like Yumlife or Yummylife, they allow you to zoom out and move around using WASD. It improves the experience immensely. The game is very entertaining, the concept is very creative, and 99% of people are nice and will help you. You cooperate with other people to build a town My only criticism is that the vanilla game is too zoomed in and doesn't have WASD navigation, you can only move around with the mouse. So vanilla game is just frustrating for me, I don't enjoy it. But with mods it becomes a great game, I highly recommend it
