Omega Mouse Zero seems alright and full of potential honestly, It's got some pretty strange vibes, I was starting to get into it. ..but then I encountered a bug where I wasn't able to save at a save point, despite it having let me do it at the past few I had encountered. I eventually died somewhere with plenty of progress lost and lacked the motivation to redo everything. Maybe if that bug can get fixed up I will revisit this one day.
This could have been a decent small indie game, but the meaningless map and poor shooting ruin it. UPDATE: Changing to recommended. Recent patches and updates improved the map; now it changes and removes icons as you collect items. The story involves an evil organization seeking to govern all dimensions. Only in one dimension was Omega Mouse able to vanquish the organization. Now his goal is to release all other identical mice in other dimensions and form an army capable of defeating the organization. That's why the game begins with a hero who has already completed all upgrades, equip, and missions. However, this is only available until you rescue a new mouse, who will become the next hero. You just get a gun and a shield and lose everything else. The goal is to explore the facility and recover all equipment. You have a variety of combat abilities at your disposal. There's a basic gun, kick and roll, a far more useful shield that stops most projectiles, a secondary fire that fires additional projectiles, a missile launcher, and a force field. Everything will need to be found first. The missile launcher has limited use because of limited ammo. The same applies for the force field and secondary fire, which consume some of your energy but may be refilled by grabbing packs from destroyed enemies. The force field will be your most used ability because combat is frustrating without it. It creates a circle around you that slows down all bullets. Although everything works fine, the combat and movement isn’t that great. Looking at the screenshots, the game appears to be a side-scrolling action game in which you can only move left or right. Unfortunately, that is not the case. The game has depth, allowing you to move further in or closer to the camera. This doesn't seem too horrible when you're going around, but it falls apart in fight. The problem is that your weapon does not automatically target the target you are shooting at. This means that you have to reposition yourself in the same straight line to hit anything. Worse, opponents don't have this problem and can hit you from aynwhere. Because of this, flying enemies are a hassle. Another unusual design choice is that saving at save stations does not replenish anything. The game attempts to address this by having enemies drop small energy or health packs, but this just puts you into a repeating loop after each fight. The map is a blue chaos because you can't see individual rooms. The game's world is locked by doors that require certain clearance, however this is not shown. If you can't find the data, the map doesn't identify critical items like upgrades and powerups, so you'll have to either remember where everything is or deal with the map. Unfortunately, icons are broken and entirely useless. They remain on the map even after you grab an upgrade, so you never know which ones you already have. I will change the review when the map is more useful with working icons.
Metroidvanias with hard rock music have a history of being very bad. Metroidvanias with anthropomorphic mice also have history of being very bad. This has both. My hope is that two very negative trends would cancel each other out to produce a good game. Unfortunately that didn't happen but it was not for the reasons I expected. It turns out the reasons this is bad are as follows: - The map is completely useless - The game decided to try out a unique 2.75D style. How should I explain this... do you remember those old arcade beat em ups how you had to move into lanes and could only attack baddies in the lane that you are in? well, this game has that, its the first metroidvania ever made to feature that. Unfortunately, it doesn't work out at all in practice. The reason why is that it is usually very hard to see which lane the enemies are in, enemies can shoot at you from any lane but you can only attack them on their lane. It's too bad this doesn't work really, this could have been a really fun originaly metroid like - The performance is too poor when there are too many entities nearby, which is weird because my CPU was recently adjusted to be able to handle lots of stuff thrown at it... so why didn't it? - The game is too unpolished and the menu feels really unfinished and primitive. - The lighting is too poor, the devs clearly didn't follow the guides for how to use lighting to subtly guide the player either....
The game itself has potential, but the 2.5D is badly designed and makes what should be a fun game intensely frustrating. After getting stuck in the same area for about 45 mins, because it is hard to establish depth perception wise, were to shoot from, especially when the enemies are above you, I gave in and I will not be returning to this game unless it is fixed. I love a challenge and honestly would have given up sooner if I wasn't so stubborn, but having played some other 2.5D games in my life, this isn't a challenge; it is just badly executed.
Cool mouse ! very nice game.
Omega Mouse Zero has a lot of redeeming qualities the only issues i had were the controls. Trying to do a midair kick is hard when you are using WASD controls. BUT that does not mean i did not enjoy the game! It has the feeling of a good metroidvania it's just some of the controls feel wonky. 8/10
🐭 Ratones 🐭
