Obsidian

I played this game in tandem with my mom back in the late 90's, when I couldn't have been more than 10 years old, and it's stuck with me like a fever dream ever since. Playing it again is like taking a step back into that late 20th century Gen X era of cynical excess and postmodern aesthetics. It's a fascinating time capsule! Esoteric and abstruse at times, and at others, quite cheeky. Recommended for Myst fans who are also... hm. Karl Jung fans?

This game is a gem. I wonder why nightdive studios never dared to get it?

The puzzles in this game are great. The objectives are clear, but the means of solving the puzzles aren't, leading to a great game play loop of discovery. Additionally, the game looks great and has this great sense of style to it's presentation. I just wish it was longer.

10/10 puzzle point n click. Random puzzles help with replayability.

A blast from the past. I have some great memories playing this game as a kid with my best friend back when it first came out. Incredibly creative and atmospheric. A memory that sticks with you.

It's weird. The puzzles are[i] hard.[/i] The music is a strange combination of digital and midi that drifts from lovely to piercing or grating without warning. But, the visuals and surreal gameplay make this a treat for the willing point & click adventure player.

If you like adventure games, You simply MUST PLAY this game. Not much more to be said. It's very very good.

This port of the late 90s adventure classic ran problem-free. It was great to play this without having to pause for the 5-CD swapping of the original. Despite this being of the technology of its time, the cut scenes after major story section completions still hold the player's attention. Well worth a revisit, if you know it, and dive in if you like story/puzzle adventures!

I originally bought this game when it was new. And I loved it. Gaming has moved forward in the intervening years, but puzzles are still puzzles, and this is a game loaded with quality puzzles. There are some sticky places, as one would expect before "Aha!" moments, but the payoff is worthwhile. Yes, the story and the future tech feels rather dated now, but that is part of the charm. I preferred this game to Riven: The Sequel to Myst, and it was better than its non-Cyan peers in the first-person puzzler category. We like to use "atmospheric" for games such as these, as it speaks to the sense of place, but Obsidian has a spooky, millipede-up-the-spine feeling that pops up from time to time. If you enjoy Myst-like games, Obsidian is one of the better options out there. Give it a go. The price is right, and the quality, at least of design, is spot-on (the graphics...maybe not so much).
