Obsessed: Night Shift is a psychological horror title that transforms an ordinary part-time job into an increasingly disturbing struggle against fear and uncertainty. Developed by arydk and published by Akhir Hayat Studio, the game follows Valeria, a high school student forced to take on the responsibility of supporting her sick mother after the loss of her father. Working the night shift at a small nasi goreng stall becomes more than a means of earning money for medicine, as each passing evening exposes her to strange events that blur the line between reality and the supernatural. The game's premise immediately establishes an emotional foundation that gives purpose to every frightening encounter instead of relying solely on horror for shock value. The narrative stands out because it focuses on realistic hardships before introducing its unsettling mysteries. Valeria's determination to care for her family makes her an easy protagonist to sympathize with, and the financial burden she carries adds genuine tension to every decision. Rather than placing players in the role of an action hero, the game presents someone who is simply trying to endure difficult circumstances while confronting forces she cannot fully understand. This emotional backdrop makes the horror feel more personal, as the fear of losing everything is just as powerful as the supernatural dangers lurking in the shadows. Gameplay revolves around balancing routine work with growing paranoia. Preparing and serving nasi goreng to customers is integrated directly into the experience, creating moments of normalcy that are repeatedly interrupted by unsettling sights and eerie sounds. The cooking mechanics are intentionally simple, allowing players to focus on their surroundings without becoming overwhelmed by complex management systems. As the nights progress, familiar tasks become increasingly stressful because every distraction could conceal another disturbing occurrence. This contrast between everyday responsibilities and psychological horror is one of the game's strongest ideas, giving the experience a unique identity among indie horror releases. The retro-inspired presentation effectively reinforces the atmosphere. Its PlayStation-era visual style, complete with low-polygon models and nostalgic graphical effects, evokes classic survival horror games while maintaining its own personality. Instead of chasing visual realism, the game uses limited detail and carefully controlled lighting to heighten uncertainty. Dimly lit environments, narrow viewing angles, and subtle environmental changes encourage players to constantly question what they have seen, allowing tension to build naturally rather than depending on excessive jump scares. The sound design further amplifies this unease through ambient noises and long stretches of silence that make every unexpected sound feel significant. Another notable strength is the game's Indonesian setting, which gives the experience a refreshing sense of authenticity. The neighborhood food stall, local atmosphere, and familiar cultural elements distinguish the game from countless horror titles set in generic abandoned buildings or isolated laboratories. This grounded environment makes the supernatural events feel even more unsettling because they invade a place that initially appears ordinary and welcoming. The result is a horror experience that feels culturally distinctive while remaining accessible to players unfamiliar with its setting. Replayability is supported through multiple endings that reward players for making different choices throughout the story. Instead of offering a single conclusion, the game encourages exploration and experimentation to uncover additional outcomes and narrative details. This approach extends the experience beyond a single playthrough and gives players a reason to revisit the story in search of a fuller understanding of Valeria's fate and the mysterious events surrounding her night shifts. Although the game is relatively concise, its shorter length ultimately benefits the pacing by keeping the tension consistently high. The horror rarely overstays its welcome, and the focused design prevents repetitive mechanics from overshadowing the narrative. Players looking for an expansive survival horror adventure may find the experience brief, but those who appreciate atmospheric storytelling and psychological suspense will likely find its carefully crafted progression satisfying from beginning to end. Obsessed: Night Shift succeeds by combining heartfelt storytelling, effective psychological horror, and engaging everyday gameplay into a memorable indie experience. Its emotional narrative, distinctive Indonesian setting, retro-inspired presentation, and multiple endings create an experience that feels more thoughtful than many horror games of similar scope. While modest in scale, it delivers an impressive amount of atmosphere and emotional impact, making it an easy recommendation for players who enjoy narrative-driven horror with a strong sense of place.
Awesome intense and scary game! Great story line and must play!
Obsessed: Night Shift is a well-thought-out PSX-style short horror game that puts you in the shoes of Valeria, a young girl who wants to provide for her sick mother. She's fortunately asked by her uncle, Arya, to run his fried rice shop in the evenings. Everything appears to be going smoothly until a certain individual keeps showing up. At first, he keeps his distance while she's working, but he slowly makes his presence known, leaving Valeria increasingly uncomfortable and eventually fearing for her safety. This game was highly enjoyable, and I found myself making sure I collected all the secrets and unlocked all the endings. It's short, keeps you on your toes, and makes for a great playthrough. If you're into Asian-inspired environments (the game is set in Indonesia), PSX-style horror games, and immersive ambient sound design, this is a great game to pick up.
