Null Drifter

Null Drifter is like a ghetto 1-bit Nova Drift, but what it lacks in content, it makes up for with megadope lo-fi, blip hop beats. The speed and enemy density escalate a bit fast, so dashing is key. Another spin-off and side project of Project [b]Starship X[/b], even without reading about it I immediately realized it's supposed to be a simulation used by the pilots to train, as the X Maneuver is first seen here. Big name for what is a simple yet extremely useful dash, as it not only passes through enemy attacks, including energy waves that can't be avoided otherwise, it damages the enemies themselves, so much so that it's often the most efficient way to dispatch them. The gameplay is different from the other episodes of the PS series, as this is a survival arena shooter where, especially the first times, you are likely to last only a few minutes. But no run is wasted, as after one you can spend the earned money for permanent upgrades, or to have some perks at the next try. Parallel to that, while keeping a gradual escalation over a run, enemies will get more dangerous, with certain types starting to appear sooner and new bosses being unlocked and confronted. The simple monochrome graphics do their job, with many unlockable palettes. The fake chromatic aberration effect is horrible, though: I immediately looked for the option to disable it. That's pretty much it. There aren't that many stats to max out, so once that is done there's just playing to get a better score - [b]Null Drifter[/b] is one of those games you may easily pick up for a couple quick runs, or twenty, simple and very "focused".

The art's what really drew me to this game and it wasn't disappointing. The progression system isn't exactly to my taste personally, (you replay the game to unlock permanent upgrades rather than having them all at the start, which makes me feel like the early runs are less meaningful) but a lot of people like that system. Either way for the price the vibe, soundtrack, and the art are totally worth it, and gameplay-wise, being able to dash through enemies to damage them also provides a fun twist to the average twin stick.

Null Drifter's greatest strengths are its music, sound design and best of all simplicity. It's an incredibly easy game to pick up and play, due in major part to its retro-styled approach to gameplay. This game sneaked under my radar until now and with the way it's going will probably make my best of the year list. And for only seven bucks and basically playable on any system with Windows 7 or up? Hell of a freakin' steal.

Early days, but so far am absolutely having a blast. Fun game play and great upgrade system.

This is a pick up and play game that you can sink 5 minutes or several hours into if you choose. Its also difficult to master. This game deserves a game of the year for innovation I feel, as your put in some mind-numbing situations that force you to think about the best use of your dash ability
