Reviewing card games is what we do!
Not Another Dungeon?! is entirely devoid of any tactical depth, but musters enough charm to make me (likely unintentionally) chuckle a few times. That combined with the price of free and what seems to be foremostly a passion project, has pushed me into giving it a conditionally positive rating. That being said, if you are not looking for a fully casual experience and seek a card game filled with tactical challenges, this won't be worth your time. In typical roguelike fashion you fight a series of battles until the boss fights. There are no events or special rooms, you just fight. In the game there are two types of cards, creature cards and ability cards. Creature cards are heroes with basic stats like health and damage. Some of them have factions and a passive ability but these can largely be ignored. The same can be said for 99% of the ability cards except the one that adds heroes to the field (more on that later). Battles are extremely simplistic where you can attack with each hero once and use one ability card. The damage is very high in this game so most of the time everyone is getting one-shot and the sole goal becomes to one-shot faster. You can add more heroes to the fight by using a special card that you can draw. However, adding heroes means adding a bunch of useless cards to your deck as well, and adding too many heroes too early means that they will have worse stats, as they get stronger the father your progress through the levels. This essentially means you have to time when to introduce new heroes. Other ability cards are near pointless like for example having the ability to heal 2 damage, when everyone is doing 10+ damage and one-shotting. The final boss is not much more than a stronger monster so there is not much positive to say about it, which summarizes my feeling about the entire combat mechanic. After the game you can use in-game money to open "booster packs" that unlock more heroes. Again, these are mostly a variation of damage&health with some clear winners (yes, there is power creep in a single player card game). The charming part of the game comes from each hero having mostly amateur voice lines (although some are actually rather good). Maybe it's the kid in me, but it was fun hearing heroes yell out some corny taunt when delivering the final blow to a monster. For some reason some finisher voice lines are still in German which makes it even more hilarious.
The positive
+ Corny voice lines make me chuckle. + A+ for the effort. Rarely does game have voice lines, but this one even has a lengthily fully voiced intro, albeit badly edited.
The negative
- The entire combat system. Not many decisions to make, and those that you need to make are rather obvious. There is not enough mechanics to create any space for meaningful decision making.
Conclusion:
This is the definition of a casual game, and its casual to a fault. It's free but has an extremely low skill ceiling. Clearly there is love poured into the game, but players looking for a more complex card game with tactical combat will not find it here. Without the funny voice lines and the price of free, it would have no redeeming elements. Careful recommendation. Know what you're getting yourself into. Fantastic Sound meets Great Cardgame Not Another Dungeon?! Deshalb empfehlenswert! Weiter sagen! Wie viele Anläufe hast du benötigt, bist du alle Ebenen besiegt hast? Simple but entertaining. Not bad for a student project at all

"Not Another Dungeon?!" is a contentless ("roguelite", which means the developer thought they could use samey procgen algorithms instead of creating content) card game... very light on the deckbuilding. It's got some really mediocre "My First Wacom Tablet" artwork, clunky rules... I guess the best you could say about it is that it was a decent "attempt" to make a game. But it doesn't have a lot of appeal for gamers. There's no English translation for the game, but that's okay. The language of bad games is universal. This has some really mediocre looking graphics that will understandably be a turn off for a lot of gamers, and it's a big contributor to the failure of the game to attract gamers despite having no up-front cost. Gaming is a primarly visual medium, and if developers want to succeed, they must understand that it's not an area for compromise. You deserve better than compromises. Not every "free" game really is. There's often MTX, or content locked behind DLC, or donations being requested, or any other number of things that could mislead gamers, but in this case I'm glad to say this really does appear to be a fully free game. Nothing demonstrates a developers belief in themselves and their work than giving it away without any remuneration. This is a service to themselves, and the gaming industry, and should be applauded. Of course, just because something is free, doesn't necessarily mean it's valuable. Even though this is "free", it failed to appeal to the 120 million+ gamers on Steam. SteamDB showed the game peaked at just a dozen or so concurrent players, and now there's basically nobody playing it. Even though it's free. This is a dismal public reception, but it's easy to see why gamers rejected it. Bearing in mind that free games don't add +1 to your game collector count, should you bother adding this to your library and downloading it? Not this time. This isn't worth downloading. While this won't cost you any money, you get what you pay for, and sometimes, even when the game is free, it's still not enough.
Gute Arbeit Beatless!
