Very old school. Very nostalgic. Very good.
Nightmare House: The Original Mod is one of those older horror games that still manages to create a good atmosphere without needing modern graphics or complicated systems. It started life as a Source mod and this Steam version brings Nightmare House, Nightmare House 2 and The Lost Files together into one free package. I am thrown into an abandoned house before eventually waking up inside the ruined Never Lose Hope hospital, where things quickly turn into a fight for survival. The basic setup is simple, but the combination of creepy environments, strange events and sudden attacks gives the whole thing a good horror feel. The atmosphere is easily the strongest part for me. The hospital is dark, damaged and full of little details that make me want to look around even when I know something is probably waiting for me. The game does not rely entirely on enemies being around every corner either. A lot of the tension comes from walking through an apparently empty area and wondering when something is going to happen. The ghost that follows me throughout the story is especially effective because I never feel completely comfortable when I know she is around. The newer Steam version also improves the lighting, fog and some of the textures while keeping the old Source style intact. The shooting is fairly straightforward, but I think it works well alongside the horror. I have to deal with undead enemies and larger groups of creatures as I move through the hospital, so the game eventually becomes more action focused than the opening sections might suggest. I like that balance because it stops the experience from becoming nothing but walking through dark corridors waiting for another scare. There are also physics based interactions and some puzzles, which give me a reason to pay attention to the environment instead of simply following a corridor from one fight to the next. The main weakness for me is the age of the original design. Even with the improvements made for the Steam release, some areas still feel like they came directly from an older Source mod because they did. The movement, combat and level design are not as polished as what I would expect from a modern horror game, and some of the scares can feel predictable once I understand how the game likes to set them up. I also think the action sections can take away some of the tension because once I have a weapon and enough ammunition, I feel much safer than I did during the quieter parts. I also appreciate how much content has been put into this version without making me pay for it. The Steam release combines the original Nightmare House with Nightmare House 2 and The Lost Files, while adding achievements and various technical improvements. The developers have also continued working on the project after its Steam release, with another update planned for 2026. That makes this feel less like an abandoned old mod simply being uploaded to Steam and more like an effort to preserve and improve a piece of Source horror history. What makes it work for me is that it has a very specific old school horror feeling. I like the strange story, the abandoned hospital, the ghost, the undead enemies and the way the game constantly mixes quiet exploration with sudden danger. It is not trying to compete with modern horror games through realistic graphics or complicated mechanics. Instead, it uses the limitations of the Source engine to create something that feels rough but memorable. Some parts have definitely aged, but there is still enough atmosphere here for me to overlook a lot of that. Overall, Nightmare House: The Original Mod is a solid horror package that I think is well worth experiencing, especially because it is completely free. The atmosphere is strong, the story gives me enough mystery to keep moving forward and the mixture of exploration, puzzles and shooting keeps the gameplay from becoming too one note. The older mechanics and occasional predictable scares stop me from rating it extremely highly, but I think the Steam improvements make this a good way to experience the series today. For me, it is a good example of how an older Source horror project can still be genuinely enjoyable when the atmosphere and ideas are strong enough. Rating: 8.4/10

A great nostalgia trip! I remember watching Youtubers play this when I was a kid so it was nice to finally play the game myself! It was definitely impressive when it came out around 15 years ago! Today, it was more goofy at times with the use of jumpscares, dialogue between the SWAT members and such. The earlier chapters had an awesome environment with a decent soundtrack to match it. Whether you're like me and remember this game from the past or have discovered it, give it a go! It's a fun little horror game that doesn't take up too much time an the achievements are easy to obtain.
топчик
可以,短小而精悍,虽然是免费游戏,但是质量挺高的,恐怖范围做的也还可以
