A charming classic RPG that taps into that Ghibli-like aesthetic and cuteness! It's like I'm playing inside a book. Despite being quite an old game, it still looks good today. The visuals, music, and voice acting were all lovely that it carries the game a lot especially on grinds. Whole Gameplay: Feels like if Pokemon and Dragon Quest had a baby HAHAHA Battle Mechanics: Has a lot of potential but can be a little bit cumbersome. You also need to manage your items and MP as this game will not coddle its players. There are instances that I would need to re-challenge a boss after knowing its tricks/weaknesses - esp if you don't use walkthroughs. Pacing: May become a little slow and grindy when you want to complete all side quests or capture specific familiars. If you're not into that, best to move on another game. Story: I love how wholesome this is. It felt like I am reading a children's story book. Heck you can even read a literal animated book inside the game! And they are written beautifully as well. Music and Voice Acting: Both were really nice! Very fitting to the whole otherworldly feel. Both English or Japanese dialogues are great as well. Overall, I enjoyed this one and would definitely recommend to players who loves Pokemon / Dragon Quest-like games.
So damn wholesome. What a cute story. The combat is a little lackluster but the story, atmosphere, and characters make up for it.
I bouth it when I watched Ghibli films. The game looks very good, the story seemed nice, but it took to much time to progress and I had not enough attention span with a newborn Now I don't get back into the game and it seems unnecessary, that I have to use companions to fight. Doesn't seem to be my type of game. I think, if you are young and have lots of free time, it might good enough.
i LOVE this game. studio ghibli animation, heartwarming story, fantastic gameplay, expansive characters, and so much more. my first experience of Ni no Kuni was a stampylonghead playthrough of the game. i got so hooked that i asked my dad for the game on my PS3 on my 7th birthday. the sad thing is... i just couldn't get past this one particular boss fight 50% into the game. i was young, and probably still stupid, and i dropped the game. i bought it again on steam just to fully immerse myself and figure out why i loved this game as a young kid and i now know exactly why. there is just so much SOUL and LOVE poured into this game. it is genuinely one of the cutest, most fun experiences i've ever had playing a story game. i love this game so much that when i got to the final boss... i couldn't make myself complete it. i have a faint memory of how the story ends from the stampy playthrough and yet... i just didn't want the game to end. i've NEVER felt this with any other game. i still have my save file from December of 2022 right before the finale :') if there is anything to pick up for this winter sale or any sale in the future, it is this game. $7.49 is an amazing steal for such a beautiful story. the amount of joy i received from playing this is something i can't put into text.
Don't listen to all the negative reviews this game both looks amazing and has a great story this has been one of my favourite games for years and for good reason
The first hour is a real test, It feels like you're playing an episode of Telly Tubbies or some shiii, its slow, its childish and the story is pretty bland. The animation is really well done and I really like the art style. The game itself seems to be aimed towards 7 to 9 year olds and their Nintendo Switch's. I'm going to give it another go at some point but for now, its coming across as a children's game, and I just can't get into it! Maybe it gets better the longer you play, or the younger you are?
i know i have put 'do not recommend' but there is a reason. i have always loved the story, the aesthetic of this game, its one that i can always enjoy and gives me that heart warming feeling! its a game with beautiful Ghibli art style, and amazing graphics for 2013, and they hold up pretty well. its a game i would recommend if it were not for the battling system. i need to start by saying i didn't go into this game blind, i had watched many a playthrough growing up of this game (shout out to stampy because i watched his playthrough so many times.) i have played both games in the series (i actually played Nino Kuni 2 first on PlayStation 4) and THOROUGHLY enjoyed the gameplay. HOWEVER Nino Kuni ones gameplay leaves a lot to be desired. I can see what they were going for, but the constant battles with the familiars are almost frustrating, especially with no real way to avoid the battles, the 'run away' option BARLEY works and often you cannot escape fights or avoid them. i understand that you constantly need to be in these fights to level up. which brings me to the levelling system. grinding takes FOREVER. now why am i fighting the creatures in the
ivory tower
and only getting 600 EXP, the same amount when fighting in
Yule
there are no ways to boost you levels unless you do 800 battles with enemies for HOURS on end with very little result. i spent one hour playing just fighting battles and levelled up from 50 to 52. in an HOUR. doing nothing but battles. including doing some bounties hoping to get more EXP. but no. not only that, but it is CLUNKY. i said this out loud over and over again while playing. to me it was frustrating to control. i would often get stuck on certain corners and some invisible walls were frustrating. the speed of Oliver too was actually infuriating, and i understand they added fast travel and later
Tengiri
but Oliver is SO SLOW, plus having a speed boost is something you have to unlock with merits just like the jump which is ENTIRELY USELESS. BUT with all that being said, do play it. i think the story is magical and although intended for a younger audience, everyone of any age can connect to the story. (also play the second one its much better)
ughhhhhh it drags you along Beautiful cutscenes with engaging and beautiful animation that sucks you into the story. Then the animation budget runs out and you get animated 3D models, which are much less animated but at least have engaging dialogue (i opted for the japanese even though I don't speak it - the emotions are there man, it's not just someone reading lines). then the voice acting budget runs out and you get text boxes, and then when that's over it's an hour of clunky combat grinding and mindless fetch quests You're about to quit and never come back and then another gorgeously animated cutscene happens and you're like "oh wow ok I like this" and the cycle of dwindling entertainment repeats help I might play this again just to see the next scene save yourself
Pros: Amazing music, great story, fun gameplay, awesome CGI cutscenes. Cons: A little childish, side quests can be tedious
