I'm disappointed with this game. Aside from the occasional Studio Ghibli cutscenes, pretty (but nothing more) graphics, and pleasant music, it has nothing to offer. All the limitations of the original Nintendo DS version are fully evident here. Boring and repetitive quests (run from point A to point B), a lack of variety in enemies, and primitive dialogues with NPCs. I recognize the publisher’s typical desire to cash in on the animation company’s big name. All in all, their marketing worked on me.
The game is aimed at very young children. I really like the art style and the music. Those are the two very redeeming points of the game. I will say that the music overpowers the actual game. It just doesn't fit with the childish story and gameplay. The story is very childish almost Barney levels of childness. The combat is just abysmal. You get thrown way too many battles pers walking distance that is just becomes a chore. The actual combat in the game is kind of like pokemon. However, it's not entirely obvious what traits of your characters will actually be better than the opponent. It's extremely grindy and tedious so I won't be playing it anymore.
I am sure that, story-wise, this game has something to offer to some people. Ine the few hours I played, I feel like I've streched 15 min of actual game to 5 hours. The script is incredibly repetitive, which has the effect of making you annoyed at it and you end up skipping text that was important, because 90% of it was just retelling what you saw, repeating what you were already told, or telling you you're stupid. Seriously. Like, I get that the hero is a kid, but being told, through the character, that you are dumb for not fguring out somthing that you did, in fact, figure out, but the game didn't let you test or try out first, is just incredibly aggravating. Plus, it's written in a very childish way that is close to Ghibli's style, but somehow dumbed down, like it's for children, but gods. This game is way too boring and complex for kids. I don't understand who the audience they were writing for was, because it's so stupid. 30 min in and I already ahve so many questions that arent "oh I wonder why that is" but more like "why the ♥♥♥♥ would anyone go about this thing that way" ? On top of that, the combat is boring. fights go from too hard to not even a challenge in a few encounter, but you keep getting encounters over and over, which trivialise the challenge you first had, and makes every step up in difficulty feel unjustified. The game will drop a ton of lore, tghrought lots of text, and won't let you go read it before moving on to the next cutscene or item, and next piece of lore, so you end up with 20 min of reading just to catch up before you can start playing again. I just want to play, not do homeworks. I saw friends play and they liked the game, I love Miazaky's art so I told myself, "why not?". And my brief experience has now sullied the idea I had of what the game was with what it could have been. It's cute. But that's about it.
If you're older than 5 this is not the game for you. It's long long dialogues are written for kids, i almost broke my skip button. But what broke me was that after doing a 20mins completely pointless - go from A to B and then to A and then to B - quest i couldn't save. Then i got into a dungeon, no save point still, somehow died to a beginner enemy, and found out i needed to go back to the title screen to load back my save. And the latest save was about 30minutes before. So yeah i ragequit this exasperating game
I'm firmly of the belief that people glaze this game purely for the art style. There's so many little things that add up that make this game bad. Why tf is a basic mana potion so expensive? Every basic little tiny thing costs far more than it should, most likely to encourage grinding. Because the basic mana pots and beyond are stupidly expensive, you end up trying to conserve mana for healing, or boss fights...but in the latter case that ends up being stupid because basic attacks do far more damage than spells in the same amount of time. The counter system barely works. Half the time I'm getting attacked I never see the blue counter attack bar, and most of the time you can't actually knock an enemy out of a spell without specific skills. Most of the "pokemon" aspect of this game is absolutely terrible. A ton of them are just color swaps, who later get like one or two things added to them for their final evolve. Getting them is mostly annoying because you end up grinding until they run away from you before you get the one you want, meaning everything on the map runs away crying the second you enter their line of sight. Most of the magic is pointless outside of battle, too. Why is form familiar a spell I can choose? WTF does broom broom do? Half of this garbage is used once and then never again. I just looked it up, and secret ingredient is in fact used exactly one time IN THE ENTIRE GAME. EVERYTHING in this game loves to waste your patience and time. Jumping Jack, one of the first merit rewards you get, is almost entirely useless. It doesn't make you go faster, it's used none times in the overworld. The only useful thing it does is let you get super glims slightly before you would have gotten them otherwise. Jack Be Nimble says it makes you run faster on the overworld, but I didn't notice a single difference. You have to walk EVERYWHERE, and you are SO SLOW, and enemies run WAY FASTER so you end up getting bombarded at first, and eventually you're just walking around with a bunch of dummies fleeing in every direction. You go into the desert area and get told not to fight things in the area just yet and I'm just like HOW DO YOU EXPECT ME TO DO THAT. There's a lot more wrong with the game but you get my point. Death by 1000 needles. This game is not good.
i LOVE this game. studio ghibli animation, heartwarming story, fantastic gameplay, expansive characters, and so much more. my first experience of Ni no Kuni was a stampylonghead playthrough of the game. i got so hooked that i asked my dad for the game on my PS3 on my 7th birthday. the sad thing is... i just couldn't get past this one particular boss fight 50% into the game. i was young, and probably still stupid, and i dropped the game. i bought it again on steam just to fully immerse myself and figure out why i loved this game as a young kid and i now know exactly why. there is just so much SOUL and LOVE poured into this game. it is genuinely one of the cutest, most fun experiences i've ever had playing a story game. i love this game so much that when i got to the final boss... i couldn't make myself complete it. i have a faint memory of how the story ends from the stampy playthrough and yet... i just didn't want the game to end. i've NEVER felt this with any other game. i still have my save file from December of 2022 right before the finale :') if there is anything to pick up for this winter sale or any sale in the future, it is this game. $7.49 is an amazing steal for such a beautiful story. the amount of joy i received from playing this is something i can't put into text.
So damn wholesome. What a cute story. The combat is a little lackluster but the story, atmosphere, and characters make up for it.
Don't listen to all the negative reviews this game both looks amazing and has a great story this has been one of my favourite games for years and for good reason
Pros: Amazing music, great story, fun gameplay, awesome CGI cutscenes. Cons: A little childish, side quests can be tedious
