Necrosphere64 – A Brutal but Addictive Minimalist Metroidvania Necrosphere64 is a hard-as-nails precision platformer with a minimalist Metroidvania twist. With only two buttons, tiny 64×64 pixel graphics, and a short yet intense campaign, it delivers a pure, no-frills challenge that will test your patience and reflexes. What to Expect ✔ Ultra-Minimalist Design – Simple, clean pixel art with a sharp focus on gameplay. ✔ Tight and Tough Platforming – No jumps, just clever movement mechanics. ✔ Instant Respawns – Death is part of learning; no long waits, just retry. ✔ Amazing Soundtrack – Custom music by Patricia Taxxon sets the mood perfectly. ✔ Speedrunner-Friendly – A built-in timer and minimal RNG make for tight runs. What You Might Not Like ❌ Frustrating Difficulty – The game is intentionally punishing and requires patience. ❌ Limited Controls – The two-button scheme is innovative but might feel restrictive. ❌ Button-Mashing Section – Some parts (especially an optional late-game challenge) can feel unfair. Final Verdict If you love precision platformers and enjoy the challenge of mastering a tight, minimal control scheme, Necrosphere64 is a must-play. It’s brutal, it’s rewarding, and it’s incredibly well-designed. Just be prepared to suffer… and love every second of it. 8.5/10

It's actually a really fun game, if you have normal working hands. However, if you require any sort of accessibility to use the poorly-implemented "double-tab-direction" to fire? Good luck. Doesn't matter how steep the learning curve is or not when you physically can't do the required inputs with no options in-game for assistance. So, if you're an able-bodied (or, at the very least a pair of floating hands), you'll really enjoy this game. It had a lot of potential but I just can't fathom why, in a genre like this, they would implement such a weird choice for shooting. Nothing against the game, not their fault some of us have physical issues, but it is their fault for ignoring accessibility. Luckily, there are thousands of other great platformers/metroidvanias that do give a crap about the rest of us.
This game has something to it! Despite its seeming simplicity on the surface and its very successful implementation of a frustrating precision platformer, metroidvania experience- there's more than just a damn fine free game! I am left after finishing it with the sense that I played a game that somehow was a kind of poem, ironic to something so rife with tense and furious button smashing and nail biting timing. But the game, in combination with the very restricted use of cutscenes, serves dually as a treatment upon very real existential themes- such as the search for self and rebirth. Further adding to this exploration is that the two men shown in the cutscenes are both military and one of them has to show his faithfulness to the other by ending his life as the catalyst for the game and his reality to be reduced to that of primitive pixels. As extremely bewildering in its sudden distortion this new scape we find ourselves in with its brutal navigation system- and only the 16 jewels to be found to represent some level of kinship to beauty and familiarity with our world is it not that maybe the game is making a bold statement that the real war is the inner war within the self and that the death is symbolic of going on a journey to find what's true in one and discard what isn't? Is it also possible that the fact that your character has to depend upon the loyalty of another to begin this death in order to find their real selves indicative that the creator of this game is arguing the necessity of connection as well as independence in the search for meaning? I like games like this that somehow manage to be more than what they just appear and seem to use all their functioning parts to operate on layers of meaning- here both gameplay and a meditative musing are fully served by all the things that went into the design.
