MU: Dark Epoch is a game that immediately feels like a very traditional fantasy MMORPG, and I think that is both its biggest strength and its biggest weakness. I start by picking a class and then spend my time fighting monsters, collecting equipment, improving my character and pushing through different areas. There is a lot going on here, and I found myself constantly unlocking another feature or system. It has that classic feeling of watching a character become more powerful over time, which is something I always enjoy when the progression is handled well. The combat is fast and very focused on clearing groups of enemies. My character can tear through monsters and collect plenty of equipment along the way, which makes even fairly normal battles feel rewarding. The high drop rate means I am regularly finding new gear to compare and upgrade. I liked this because the constant stream of equipment gives me a reason to keep fighting instead of feeling like every monster is just something standing between me and the next quest. The class system is another part I enjoyed. The game brings back classic MU classes while giving them different progression paths and class changes. This gives me plenty of room to develop my character and decide how I want to build them. I also liked the idea of eventually changing classes rather than being permanently stuck with the first choice I make. There is a lot of character progression here, and that is probably where most of my time would go. There is also a surprisingly large multiplayer side to the game. I can join other players for dungeons, create or join a guild, collect companions and take part in PvP battles in Roland City. The free trading system and auction house also give the economy a much bigger role than I expected. I liked having the option to trade equipment rather than simply treating everything I find as something to sell or throw away. It gives the loot system another layer that fits the MMORPG design nicely. My biggest problem is the amount of automation. MU: Dark Epoch has AFK leveling that allows my character to continue progressing and collecting loot while I am not actively playing. This can be convenient, especially when I am busy, but I think it also takes away some of the feeling that I am actually playing the game. A lot of the experience can become watching numbers increase and letting systems handle things for me. There are moments when I want to take control and actually play rather than simply manage the progression. The free to play structure is another thing I have mixed feelings about. There are in game purchases, and the sheer number of progression systems can make the game feel like it is constantly encouraging me to improve something. I liked the generous amount of loot and the ability to keep upgrading my equipment, but the long term progression is clearly built around keeping me engaged with the game for a very long time. The presentation is also quite flashy, with plenty of dramatic effects and equipment upgrades, which fits the style but can sometimes make everything feel a little excessive. Overall, I think MU: Dark Epoch is a solid MMORPG for me if I want a very progression focused fantasy game with lots of loot, classes, dungeons and multiplayer activities. The equipment system and class progression are the strongest parts, and I enjoyed seeing my character become more powerful as I played. The heavy automation and free to play structure stop it from feeling as engaging as a more traditional hands on MMORPG, but there is still a huge amount of content here. I think it is worth trying if I enjoy the classic MU style of constant grinding, upgrading and chasing better gear. Rating: 7.5/10
