As an idle game, you can idle plenty. However, it's the type to slow down immensely after a certain point, trying to encourage you to spend real money. You can 100% acquire everything without spending real money, as the premium currency can be found in-game in small quantities randomly, but it's a pittance. Everything encourages you to spend money, though maybe not as blaringly overt like a popup screaming at you: a scientist dies, you can resurrect them for the currency; you run out of chests to open, you can buy more for currency; that cave you're exploring is collapsing soon, you can get more time with the currency; there's a trader you want to buy from who is leaving soon, you can extend their visit with the currency; there's no trader, you can get one faster with the currency. So it's the type of idle game that intentionally kneecaps free players to try to get them to pay.
