Metal Swarm Infinity is an indie arcade shooter that proudly embraces the traditions of classic space-based shoot ’em ups while incorporating enough modern ideas to keep the experience feeling fresh. Developed by Andrew Nutter666 Jaggar and George Dutton, and published by Andrew Nutter666 Jaggar, the game places players in a galaxy threatened by a relentless mechanical menace known as the Metal Swarm. The premise is simple, but it serves as an effective foundation for a gameplay-focused experience where survival, reflexes, and high-score chasing take center stage. Rather than relying on elaborate storytelling, the game focuses on delivering a steady stream of action that constantly pushes players to improve their performance. The heart of the game lies in its procedurally generated wave system. Instead of presenting the same enemy formations every time, Metal Swarm Infinity introduces randomized encounters that help each run feel different. This approach greatly enhances replay value, as players never know exactly what combination of enemies they will face next. The constant unpredictability keeps the action engaging and prevents the gameplay loop from becoming too repetitive. As enemy numbers increase and attack patterns become more complex, players must carefully balance aggressive offense with precise movement and evasive maneuvers. Combat is fast, energetic, and satisfying. Enemy ships swarm the screen in large numbers, creating a constant sense of pressure. Collecting power-ups becomes an essential part of survival, granting access to stronger weapons and additional offensive capabilities. The game encourages players to stay active and take risks rather than simply hiding in safe corners. This design philosophy creates exciting moments where skillful positioning and quick reactions can turn overwhelming situations into spectacular victories. The controls feel responsive, allowing players to weave through incoming attacks while maintaining a steady barrage of fire against their opponents. One of the most memorable aspects of the experience is the presence of giant boss encounters. These massive enemies serve as major milestones throughout a run and offer a welcome change from standard wave-based combat. Each boss requires players to study attack patterns, identify weaknesses, and react quickly to dangerous situations. Defeating them provides a strong sense of accomplishment while also rewarding players with valuable power cores that can be used to enhance their ship. This progression system gives players a reason to continue returning even after completing multiple runs, as each upgrade improves their chances of surviving deeper into the game. The variety offered by the three primary game modes is another notable strength. Arcade Mode functions as the main attraction, featuring dozens of enemy waves and the full progression experience. Practice Mode provides a more forgiving environment where players can familiarize themselves with mechanics, enemy types, and boss encounters without facing the complete challenge. Meanwhile, Deathwish Mode caters to experienced players who desire a brutally difficult test of skill, removing most safety nets and demanding near-perfect performance. These options ensure that newcomers and genre veterans can both find a version of the experience suited to their preferences. Progression extends beyond ship upgrades through an assortment of unlockable content. The game rewards achievement completion with cosmetic enhancements, visual filters, bonus features, and additional challenges. These extras help maintain player motivation by providing long-term goals beyond simply finishing a run. The retro-inspired CRT filter is especially appealing for fans of classic arcade gaming, giving the presentation an authentic old-school atmosphere. The inclusion of bonus content and hidden objectives adds another layer of replayability that complements the procedural nature of the gameplay. Visually, Metal Swarm Infinity favors clarity and functionality over cutting-edge graphical effects. The colorful art style makes enemy projectiles, collectibles, and hazards easy to identify even during the most chaotic battles. This readability is crucial in a genre where split-second decisions often determine success or failure. While the graphics may not compete with larger-budget productions, they effectively support the gameplay and contribute to a vibrant arcade aesthetic. The visual design succeeds because it prioritizes player awareness and responsiveness over unnecessary complexity. A particularly interesting feature is the game's streamer-focused functionality. Streamer Mode allows audiences to participate by influencing certain gameplay decisions, including boss selections and upgrade choices. This feature transforms a traditionally solitary arcade shooter into a more interactive experience for content creators and viewers. It is a creative addition that helps distinguish the game from many other independent shoot ’em ups and demonstrates an effort to adapt classic gameplay concepts to modern gaming communities. Metal Swarm Infinity does have limitations. Players searching for an elaborate narrative, extensive world-building, or highly varied environments may find the experience somewhat narrow in scope. The focus remains firmly on arcade action, repeated runs, and score improvement. However, these elements are precisely what many fans of the genre seek. The game understands its audience and delivers a focused experience centered on reflexes, mastery, and replayability rather than attempting to become something it is not. Overall, Metal Swarm Infinity is a highly enjoyable indie shooter that successfully combines traditional arcade design with modern progression systems and community-focused features. Its procedural waves, challenging boss battles, unlockable content, multiple difficulty options, and satisfying combat create an engaging package that rewards both persistence and skill. While it may not revolutionize the shoot ’em up genre, it offers a polished and entertaining experience that should appeal to anyone who enjoys fast-paced space combat and the thrill of chasing ever-higher scores. Rating: 6/10
Very nice and very affordable retro space action shooter in the line of old school Galaga. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H08v_chB2Vo This game offers a choice to play with mouse & keyboard, mouse alone, or a controller. Just make sure you select which option you want to use in the game options before starting a game. While I'd like to see the options off sliders for the sound effects and music, an off or on switch for these is all that's currently available. There are also no resolution settings, but there is a full screen or window option which helps. The controls are crisp and responsive regardless of which control option you've made. Sound effects are well done, but I did notice that your ships basic fire has no sound at all, which makes the game feel like it's missing something.. and it is! My biggest complaint with Metal Swarm Infinity is that there just isn't enough variety in the basic enemies and bosses. It's the year 2021, and even though this game only costs $5 USD, it would still be nice to see this game offer more variety and depth so that it has much longer replay value. Overall, I give this game a Recommend, and an 8 out of 10 score which some might find a little bit high. I'd argue with anyone however who scored this game under a 7 out of 10 because it is definitely a solid game and a pretty good value for the price. RECOMMENDED.. but not a "must buy" even to the most hard core retro space shooter fans out there. There's just too many much better, much deeper space blasters available today.
Man, this game is difficult. But I love a good challenge and am happy to say I made it past wave 50! Very addicting to where I could just keep playing and playing :)
loved the game but couldnt get past the first boss was a tad difficult that or i suck so much lol
