Lucky me gets to be the first to warn gamers about yet another garbage asset flip. Mei Paranormies is the 64th in a row of asset flips from Anamik Majumdar, who keeps reskinning the same lame GameMaker Studio game templates and re-releasing them on Steam with a few minor changes. Anamik produces roughly two of these asset flips per month and publishes them on Steam Direct. This asset flip spam is incredibly harmful pollution on the store. The GameMaker Studio templates he keeps re-releasing are just basic retro pixel (couldn't he rip off a template with proper graphics??) 2D top down/platformer stealth/action games. Here's some other copy + pastes from Anamik of exactly the same game template:

Abandoned Cabins in the Woods
Abandoned Croxon Mansion
Arata Haunted Asylum
Ashentia Hauntings
Axizon Labs: Zombies
Canterz Paranormies
Canterz Paranormies 2
Carlos Haunted House
Charles Haunted Mansion
Clara Wraiths
Davis Haunted House
Emi's Solo Ghost Haunting
Gaze At Maze
Ghost In The Barn House
Gregor Hills Haunted Hospital
Haunted Jail: Alcatas
Heltons Haunted Hotel
House Number 666
Koverpark Haunted Subway
Manicos Haunted Hotel
Mei Paranormies
Mello Haunted House
My Grandpa's Haunted House
My Haunted Doll
Palmvil Haunted Villa
Rescue Rina
Ryo The Haunted Office
Shelley's Haunted House
The Chills
The Haunted Exmone Theatre
The Haunted Nora Apartment
The Haunted Spot
The Haunted Tunnel
Zeroton Hauntings
These are all EXACTLY the same game!!! There's also this other 2D platformer template which has been copied+pasted many times:

Ava's Adventure
Balloon Azuna
Boon Boon
Christmas Cats Revenge
Electronic World Z
Emiko's Pledge
Emiko's Pledge 2
Emiko's Pledge 3
Emiko's Pledge 4
Fight For Love
Jaxon The Thief
Keatz: The Lonely Bird
Mika's Battle S
Mika's Battle S 2
Mika's Battle S 3
Mission XAM
NightmareZ
Orange Santa
Smash Halloween Pumpkins: The Challenge
Super Strawberry Man
The Christmas Gifts
The Hero of Bangaona
The Valley of Super Flowers
Yui Tui
Zack Y
These are all exactly the same game, same assets, just a pallette swap every now and then... the laziest "game development" known to mankind. And it's all garbage! And honorable mentions, the shoot 'em up copy+pastes, Ayako's Mission, Proxy Air Force and Warships on the Halloween Night. These are all basically the exact same GameMaker Studio game templates with a different skin and a couple of things changed. No professional effort was made in terms of game development, using a game construction kit requires no game development talent, and unsurprisingly produces products that have little to no value as games, especially when compared to the work of professional developers who create genuine products for gamers. We can consider this to be asset flipping, in this case only barely more ethical just because it's the developers own assets that keep getting copy + pasted, but the end result for gamers is the same as any Russian asset flip: A fake game with extremely poor quality, no value or merit as a serious game for gamers, polluting Steam and abusing Steam Direct as a cash grab. No matter how many times this guy copy+pastes the same game, it's not suddenly going to become anything but garbage. Rehashing the same game over and over again is just a cheap nasty cash grab. While Anamik Majumdar occasionally breaks Valve guidelines for partners and attacks reviewers, any legitimacy he may have is eradicated by the way he pumps these copy+paste asset flips out and bulk sells keys to crapware bundle merchants like DailyIndieGame. It's also important to note Anamik Majumdar has denied using GameMaker Studio to make his asset flips, despite every single one being made with GameMaker Studio. It's unclear why Anamik Majumdar has been misleading about these templated cash grabs, but when developers lie and mislead gamers, gamers deserve to know about it before they make a buying decision. The poor quality of this game is reflected by how many people spent time with it. At the time of this review, SteamDB shows the game all-time peak player count was only ONE player. That's right, only one person ever played this at a time. When I played this for the purposes of reviewing it, I equalled the peak player count for the game. OUCH. The only player activity occurs once or twice a month, presumably someone loading it up to see what it is then quickly uninstalling it. Considering there's over 130 million gamers on Steam and well over 140,000 games for gamers to choose from, the overwhelming lack of interest in this low quality game is to be expected. So, should you buy this game? Is this one of the best of the 140,000+ games on Steam? Mei Paranormies has the almost comically optimistic (if it wasn't so sad) price of around $4 USD, it's not worth it given the defects and shortcomings with the product, especially considering the sheer number of completely free, much higher quality games on Steam. For comparison, the $4 asking price for this game could get you games like "Assetto Corsa", "Middle Earth - Shadow of War" or "Mass Effect 2". Quality, professionally made games like those are frequently on sale cheaper than this.
Profile Features Limited! Valve have marked this game as "Profile Features Limited" at the time of this review. This is usually caused by poor sales figures and low community acceptance for the game (to date). Until this status changes, this game will not give you +1 to your Game Collector badge count, appear in profile achievements or any other Steam meta-accomplishments, nor can it be displayed in some profile showcases. If these factors are important to you, it may be worth holding off before buying this game.
I like Anamik's games. Easy Achievements, 100% / ~30min.
Mei Paranormies is a compact paranormal horror game that focuses heavily on atmosphere, supernatural mystery, and unsettling exploration inside a haunted restaurant with a tragic past. Developed and published by Anamik Majumdar, the game embraces a smaller indie horror style that prioritizes mood and tension over complex gameplay systems or nonstop action. While the overall experience is relatively short, it succeeds in creating a creepy and surprisingly immersive paranormal investigation that feels inspired by classic ghost stories and retro indie horror adventures. The story follows Mei, a paranormal investigator hired to examine strange supernatural activity inside Nokiloc Restaurant, a building connected to a deadly fire that occurred decades earlier. According to rumors, the spirits of those who died in the incident still wander the restaurant at night, terrifying employees and visitors alike. Strange noises, sightings of burned apparitions, and reports of violent paranormal encounters eventually push the owner to seek outside help. The premise itself is familiar within the horror genre, but the game uses the setting effectively enough to maintain tension throughout most of the experience. Gameplay revolves around exploring the haunted restaurant while searching for paranormal evidence and uncovering clues tied to the building’s history. Players investigate kitchens, storage rooms, dark hallways, and hidden areas using ghost-hunting equipment such as EMF detectors and EVP tools. The mechanics are intentionally simple, focusing more on environmental immersion and discovery than on survival systems or combat. Instead of fighting monsters or escaping elaborate chase sequences, the game encourages careful exploration and observation while slowly building a sense of dread through the environment itself. One of the strongest aspects of Mei Paranormies is its atmosphere. The restaurant feels deeply uncomfortable from the moment the investigation begins. Dim lighting, abandoned furniture, burned sections of the building, and eerie sound effects create the impression that the location is emotionally corrupted by the tragedy that occurred there years earlier. The game rarely relies on constant jump scares, instead building fear through anticipation and silence. Walking through narrow corridors while hearing distant footsteps or distorted whispers creates tension even when no obvious threat is present. The sound design deserves particular praise because it carries much of the game’s horror. Strange noises echo through empty rooms while static interference, distant cries, and unnatural sounds constantly make the environment feel alive in disturbing ways. The game understands how powerful subtle audio cues can be in horror experiences. Some of the most effective moments occur during quiet exploration when the player suddenly notices a small sound somewhere nearby and begins questioning whether something is watching from the darkness. Visually, Mei Paranormies uses a retro-inspired top-down presentation mixed with pixel-art environments and anime-style character portraits. The graphics are relatively simple, but the visual style fits the game’s paranormal themes well. Dark environments, flickering lights, bloodstained rooms, and ghostly apparitions all contribute to the unsettling mood. The top-down perspective also creates a nostalgic feeling similar to older RPG Maker horror games, though the focus here leans more heavily toward paranormal investigation and environmental storytelling rather than complex narrative sequences. The haunted restaurant itself becomes the game’s biggest strength because it feels believable as a location hiding unresolved trauma. Every room seems to carry traces of the past, whether through environmental details, strange paranormal manifestations, or hidden clues revealing more about the fire and its victims. The slower investigative pacing allows players to absorb the atmosphere naturally instead of rushing from one scripted scare to another. This creates a more immersive and psychologically uncomfortable experience than many larger horror games that rely heavily on constant action. The shorter runtime surprisingly works in the game’s favor. Mei Paranormies remains focused on delivering a concentrated horror experience without stretching its mechanics beyond what they can support. The game moves steadily from one paranormal encounter to another while gradually escalating the tension as more disturbing events occur deeper inside the restaurant. Because the experience remains relatively brief, the atmosphere stays effective throughout most of the playtime instead of becoming repetitive. However, the game does have several limitations. The mechanics are extremely basic, and players expecting deeper gameplay systems or more interactive paranormal investigation mechanics may find the experience too simple. Exploration and item interactions occasionally feel stiff, and the overall gameplay loop lacks the complexity seen in larger horror titles. The short runtime also limits character development and narrative depth, leaving certain story elements feeling somewhat underexplored by the ending. Technical polish is another area where the game shows its indie limitations. Animations can appear rigid, movement feels slightly awkward at times, and certain environmental interactions lack refinement. While these issues rarely ruin the experience entirely, they do occasionally break immersion during more tense moments. The horror themes themselves may also feel somewhat familiar to players experienced with paranormal indie games, as haunted buildings, ghost sightings, and tragic backstories are common elements within the genre. Despite those shortcomings, Mei Paranormies succeeds because it clearly understands the type of experience it wants to create. It is not trying to become a massive cinematic horror adventure or an action-heavy survival game. Instead, it focuses entirely on creating a creepy paranormal atmosphere inside a single haunted location, and it accomplishes that goal surprisingly well. The game’s slower pacing, unsettling sound design, and claustrophobic environments help make the investigation feel genuinely tense even when the mechanics remain simple. Mei Paranormies may not revolutionize indie horror, but it delivers a focused and memorable paranormal experience that effectively captures the feeling of exploring a cursed location filled with lingering spirits and unresolved tragedy. For players who enjoy atmospheric ghost stories, retro horror aesthetics, and exploration-driven supernatural mysteries, the game offers an eerie and enjoyable journey through one of the more unsettling haunted restaurants in recent indie horror.
