Something has gone terribly wrong.
The asylum is no longer a place of treatment, but of terror. Twisted creatures roam its halls, and whatever happened the night Maria was taken has turned Mawgate into a waking nightmare.
To survive, Maria must explore the labyrinthine institution, uncover its secrets, and find the enigmatic director, Dr. Hawley, before it’s too late.

Solve environmental puzzles to progress
Manage scarce resources and stay alive
Fight or outmaneuver the horrors within
Uncover the truth behind Mawgate’s fall
Maria MooreBorn into poverty and thrust into aristocratic life through marriage, Maria never belonged in the world she was forced into. Independent, strong-willed, and unwilling to conform, she dreamt of freedom, travel, art, a life beyond expectation.
Those dreams died the night she was taken.
Now imprisoned within Mawgate Asylum, stripped of control and branded insane, Maria must rely on her resolve to survive. Claustrophobic, isolated, and hunted, she is determined to escape and uncover what became of her husband.

An excellent free 2D take on the Resident Evil / Survival Horror Genre.
As my friend groups "hyper-niche indie game" connoisseur, this is an easy recommendation. Not so long that it overstays its welcome, but not so short that it feels like a waste of time. Maybe a tad long in the tooth if you like to double check every interactable item, especially the multiple assets that show up several times like the barrels and dead bodies, but that feels more like a me issue than a fault in the game. Just a tiny amount of jank, negligible really (I saved after using the silver key and finding the gold key, but not after unlocking the door and when I died after the hall I respawned with the key even though the game counted the door as already being unlocked so I had a spare gold key until I reached the next save room, and I put the small cog in the machine before leaving to grab the rusty cog and when I came back the smaller cog wasn't visible but the gate opened like it was still there. Tiniest stuff, like I said). While there wasn't a great deal of creativity in delivering narrative through the many notes scattered around, it feels more plausibly diegetic for people to keep journals and newspapers and reports and the like, plus it was always easy to figure out what kind of note you're about to read from the layout and font alone, which makes it easier to keep track of who essentially wrote what. I really liked the art style, and there's a fun gimmick on the health bar, but I kinda wish opening your inventory would show you your health bar somewhere cause it would go away right before I'd heal sometimes and I wouldn't know if I needed to use another without closing the suitcase and aiming to get the ui to appear again, which really only slows the process and for the most part you shouldn't be healing in combat so it's not like the biggest flaw or anything, just a little QoL idea. The final puzzle was fun, even after finding out that pulling up the interaction screen stops Hawley from moving to chase you, and the ease of trapping him on the other side of you because he wouldn't path find around the machine and table in the middle of the screen. My favorite puzzle is probably the matching shadow one, it's a really fun take on that concept without being generic. TL;DR it's fun, play if you like Project Kat/Paper Lily, or early Resident Evil. You could even make a case to get a non-gamer to play it.

Mawgate was a very enjoyable experience. Its combat system feels very reminiscent of SIGNALIS, and while it could use some polishing, it doesn't take away from the story. The puzzles are fun and while it does hold your hand through a lot of the game, being both free and a one-time-beat-it-in-one-sitting type of game, it makes up for it. It's very much worth playing through for yourself. Great work guys 👍 Some suggestions I have for bug fixes and polishing: -I have a screen with a max resolution of 2560 x 1600, and the edge of the screen gets cut off when at that setting. I had to drop it down to 1920 x 1080 in order to get the whole game to fit, which wasn't an issue really, it's just a matter of compatibility. -Aiming is kinda janky In order to kill enemies, you have to aim your reticle at them from across the screen. SIGNALIS succeeds in this take on weaponry-aiming in that there is a white line showing where exactly you're aiming to in relation to the environment, making aiming at enemies' body parts, making crit shots and all around combat experience more streamlined. Mawgate does the same, but without the white line, and just the crosshair. This makes it hard to tell how close you need to be in order to make contact with your target, as well as where you need to move to in order to dodge attacks. -The hitboxes are weird A big thing I noticed was that the hitboxes of both Maria and the enemies are hard to gauge, making shooting and movement more reliant on guesswork than anything. For example, when you fight the (for lack of the knowledge of its actual name)
skinwalker-halo-ghost enemy
, not only does it only register hits half the time, its bullets seem to hit the area around Maria and still deal damage to her. This results in the need to run past all of these types of enemies and skip some of the combat, which was a bit disappointing. Another example is when you fight (pretty big spoiler)
Dr. Hawley in the basement. Not only does he seemingly not die (which would be a nice secret achievement or something, but he also seems to only be shootable in the legs.
Maybe this was intentional, but if it wasn't, there ya go :3 Ik this all sounds pretty negative but I really enjoyed playing Mawgate and if any of the devs are reading this, I hope my suggestions help make the game even better. I'll be keeping an eye out for more stuff from you guys! Edit: Just realized this was a student made game for a university project! ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, props to you guys. This is very well polished for what it is!
Not a bad appetizer of a survival horror. My only complaints for this game are the 2nd existing enemy is a waste of bullets that hits your hitbox a lot easier than you can hit it. And lastly, that last encounter not only do you do nothing to him while working a numbers puzzle and trap him behind props, it just ends abruptly, not a very satisfying conclusion to that. Overall you have the bones of something here.
Honestly, for a game this short, this is one of my favorite games I have ever played. There is so much story and challenges for runs. I recommend this game for people that like short story games.
That was a pretty good game! I hope the dev make more games like this soon!
Good game! Well made graphics and fun puzzles :)
Very fun game despite being short, with a nice and engaging horror plot unfortunately the gameplay is not the best. But after all it is free
