Fun game! Likeable characters, and a well written story.
Enjoyable gameplay, but this game has zero respect for your time. Long animations in combat and out, tutorial stuff you can't skip
WARNING: DO NOT BUY AT FULL PRICE! I need to preface this by saying this is not necessary a "bad" game, but it's not one worth 100 euro/gbp/us dollars under any circumstance. The people that are putting in thumbs up reviews are midwits who seem to have lived under a rock their whole lives and this is their, apparently literal, first game. I have played 1hr at the start of this review with 1 main mission completed (excluding the Tutorial Mission) and I can smell the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ from 10,000 miles away. Down to it's core, Midnight Suns is a repurposed hero collection gacha game and I have several points that while by themselves may not prove it, for anyone that has played such games, will easily be able to understand what I'm talking about. 1. You do not "technically" play as the characters. Your actual character is some dude/girl called "the Hunter" (oooh, so original) who looks like a generic NPC that Firaxis borrowed from God Howard's Oblivion. Nothing remotely original or interesting, but when combined with being surrounded my other playable characters makes it look like a hero collector. 2. "Star rating missions". What do I mean by that? At the end of the mission, you get from 1 to 3 stars which then breaks down you XP and other stuff acquired. That is a classic mobile game mechanic. 3. "Superlink" or the social media for your heroes. Again, hero collector gacha 101. 4. You can purchase skins from the wardrobe using a separate currency. I don't know what it's called and I don't really care, but it's a tactiv. Now, for the rest of the game. Pros(?) - Characters look good - Graphics look good - Card mechanic is somewhat interesting and novel (at least for me) That's it for pros. Cons(Lol) - Dialogue is god awful and feels like it was written by ChatGPT. Yeah, it's only my first mission but damn these idiot characters are obnoxious. - VA does not exist. Flat. Boring. Emotionless. Could these VAs possibly fall asleep any faster at their jobs? Phoning it in doesn't even seem close. They sound like they would rather be shot dead in the street like dogs than spend even 1 minute on the game. - Stages seem to take longer than normal and enemies are generic. Overall a 4, maybe 5 out of 10. Possibly 6 if you like Marvel. Not worth the price, do not bother unless it's on the Summer Fest like the one running right now at the time of this review where I got the Legendary Edition for 20euro + every addon. EDIT (after 20+ hours into it): Still not worth the full price. Definitely worth 20 euro/dollars/whatever Dialogue gets... somewhat better as times passes on. Although that will be subjective. Still, considering the VA talent they hired for some of the characters (Nolan North is my favorite Deadpool) I can definitely let a few cringey one liners slide. My belief that this was a repurposed mobile game became even more reinforced because of all of the currencies you have to use. The exploration is nice especially as you unlock the second Word of Power but the fact that a single twig is a wall like we're in the early 2000s and you don't have jump is annoying to put it lightly. Difficulty is another problem. Vampyres are the obnoxious enemy. They have far too many abilities. If you have any Tainted Mystics, take care of them first because they can turn an enemy into a Hemalyst which is a glorified nest to spawn more vamps of the lowest level. Each vamp adds Bleed to your cards so when you use them, bleed is applied. They can spontaneously evolve into an elite which becomes tankier. Each can activate a type of Frenzy ability by themselves which allows them to attack in the middle of your turn. Etc, it's just annoying as ♥♥♥♥. On the other hand, non vamp Hydra are relative easy to deal with. So sometimes, a Vamp Normal difficulty can feel like Hard mode while a Hydra Hard difficulty can be either Easy or Normal mode. It's goofy like that. As for the characters I have so far: Piece of advice: Focus on upgrading your abilities and also prioritize modded abilities over new ones. Another pro is that many, if not all, of the characters have solid foundations with their starting cards and you can easily get far without getting new ones. My favorites so far from the "original" Midnight Suns are Minoru because she can do a lot and do it well (support, damage, utility), Ghost Rider is a damage dealing mob killer and Blade can become immortal if played right. I genuinely don't like Magik both as a character and her abilities so can't speak much there other than she's a good support that change the stage through repositioning. Iron Man is half-tank, half-damage dealing monster that if played right can clear entire stages. Captain America is a half-tank, half-support and can be pretty much the same. Spider-Man can stall stages by binding characters and focuses on environmental damage. Strange is a support with some minor damage dealing capabilities. Storm is too annoying to play and 2 of her starting cards require "electric generators" in the stage for her to be viable. Deadpool can be OP but he's a little too selfish, so he should be played with support. Basically, the more mobs he kills the more powerful his abilities become. Captain Marvel is great as she can deal damage, reposition, taunt and has AOE. Her Binary Power adds extra damage and a shield. Morbius... eh, he's mid but maybe I haven't upgraded him as much yet. He's too annoying and I don't care enough for the character. The MC (Hunter) is simply overpowered. He can do anything, but I choose Light because of the healing and shield with some Dark abilities for damage. The next most OP character that I've experience some play with is Wolvering. Multi enemy hit by chaining attacks + Life Steal and an in-built Resurrection? Damn. Can't wait to get him. I'm not that far into the game because I would like to take my time. I don't have or played Venom, Scarlet Witch and Hulk so can't speak on them. Overall, I would bump this game by 1 point from initial review. From a "4, maybe 5 out of 10. Possibly 6 if you like Marvel" to a 5, maybe 6 out of 10, 7 if you like Marvel. Not at full price though, lol.
Exceeded all my expectations! I was skeptical at first, but the fantastic story and gameplay completely won me over. Do yourself a favor and grab the Legendary Edition on sale; the DLC storyline featuring Deadpool, Morbius, Storm, and Venom is absolutely worth it.
I bought this game recently on a good sale with all the DLC. I should love this game. I'm a big Marvel comics fan who was already intimately familiar with every character featured here. I love games like XCOM or Wasteland, and I love deckbuilders. My main criticism: THIS GAME DOES NOT RESPECT YOUR TIME. You will spend most of your playtime trudging through vapid, unfunny, unimportant dialogue, or receiving tutorials on various out-of-combat systems that use a billion different little tokens. It feels like a mobile game in that way. You will also spend a huge amount of time walking around your home base area to get to anything. Compare this to a game like XCOM where the foundry and the research lab are a click away. Imagine if you physically had to walk through an uninteresting environment for about a minute before you could change your research subject. Tragically, the combat is mostly pretty good. The game just wants you to do absolutely anything but combat. That said, I did tap out when I was in Part 2 of a mission that was functionally unwinnable. The cards you draw are the same cards in the same order on each repeated attempt, so my only option was to restart the entire mission, and even then I'm not sure it would have worked. It was a DLC mission, so I'm not sure how well balanced it was. There's a good game in there. Unfortunately, they don't really want you to play it, and that's probably because there's not actually that much of it.
This should have been an easy hit for those like me that love turn-based tactics, card games and narratives, but BOY are all the characters unlikable. I really tried not to be too dismissive of the whole "cringey marvel quips", but it is really hard to take any narrative seriously when nobody in the game does.
As a massive fan of XCOM:EU and XCOM2 and deck builders I really wanted to like this game. I tried to find the fun. Desperately. But the game tries to do too much and the fun is only had during a few small moments in some battles. Namely when you get a good draw and feel like the game mechanics aren't as restrictive for once. In the end, I firmly believe there are better ways to spend your time. Sadly.
So let me get this straight. The impulse to write this review was the news of publisher implementing additional intrusive checks years post launch, supposedly requiring an online connection every 14 days. I didn't want to just repeat possible misinfo on the internet, though, I needed to verify this was a problem. Folks, 14 days is an overestimate. I took my Steam Deck completely offline between activation runs so no OS or game upgrade could disrupt the authentication state (I'm assuming shutdowns wouldn't disrupt it, because come on) and I was lucky when the game lasted 3 days without telling me it needs online mode for the "first launch". Then again, sometimes it straight crashed on startup. One could reasonably blame the hardware configuration, but this was exclusively a startup thing. The rumour goes, this is a response to copyright infringers managing a way around protection in the earlier version of the game. Now they have possibly a better experience playing it. Brilliant. This would be enough to recommend avoiding this game. But... maybe you don't care about that? I have no big complaints about technical side of actual game running, or the quality of voice acting. The other elements of the game, though, are weird, and not in the best sense. The writing has this stereotypical sheen of artificiality associated with Marvel movies, and the graphical style feels somewhat odd to me, though I can imagine someone liking them both. The two really questionable elements are primary stage gameplay and the overall upgrade system between stages, which are pretty big parts of the game, alright. The combat stages use a card based system, and I'd like to emphasize I don't have a problem with shuffled cards being a part of a combat game. However, their particular implementation feels very unnatural to me. The characters don't have separate decks, so conversation of ninjutsu starts applying. A lot of cards kind of ignore the physical locations of characters and have them run up to arbitrary enemies in a stage - often to unintuitive distance from unintuitive direction - but many non-card prop-based moves and a few cards do rely on directions derived from characters' positions to work. It isn't really coherent in my opinion. I wouldn't exactly call this system engaging, but at worst it's an unsuccessful experiment; it's passable. The upgrade loop, on the other hand, feels much more like an intended problem. It has multiple types of lootboxes available for finishing missions, destructive crafting of cards into better "normal" cards and one-time perishable items, resource starvation on the default difficulty level very early into the game. It feels very much like a free-to-play mobile title, except the menu interface was replaced with walking and someone added picking mushrooms and such to make it less obvious. I can only imagine this has something to do with the recent push for an online connection. I cannot check it at the moment - the game is crashing on online startup (while refusing to launch "for the first time" offline). I honestly don't know which option is worse - that this fairly expensive title with paid DLC asks for further money to skip the grind, or that it doesn't. Cherry on top, the writing's scripting feels like it's falling apart despite also feeling very rudimentary. I'm fairly certain one non-trivial event (Dr Strange being shown a red seal thing) happened multiple times to me. I can accept this game being less ambitious in regards to intercharacter interactione than the competition, but at least they could not bug it up that much... Do not buy this game in its current state.
