May your executions be merciless, and your extractions lucrative.
I really liked the art style and I decided to give it a shot during the server slam. I played as much as I could (27.5h) but less than 10h in I was already trying to convince my wallet to preorder the deluxe edition. 330+ hours later I'm more immersed than ever.
Does the game run properly?
In todays day and age getting a 40€ AAA release with no game breaking bugs, nice graphics that runs around 60 to 90 stable fps without frame generation on my gaming laptop is not a bargain but the deal of the year.
Tau Ceti IV might actually be alive
The maps are rich in every aspect. Every location has it's own soundscape, creaking metal pipes, beeping server racks, humming lights, ventilation fans... The buildings are not disguised shooting galleries, they're architecturally sound. You'll see reasonably placed washrooms, storage rooms, garages, shared areas in dormitories, roads connecting POIs for shipping... while still enabling tactical rotations within buildings and strategic map transversal routes.
Packing up for infil
Buildcrafting is based on 13 upgradeable shell stats, then up to 3 implants can be equipped to further increase your stats and add effects to your basic abilities then you can choose up to 2 cores which provide shell specific ability enhancements. There are 8 weapon archetypes that can equip up to 1+3 attachments, 1 being the universal chip mod that adds effects to the gun e.g. mag overflows, partial reloads, homing projectiles on kill... the other attachments provide weapon stat boosts to adjust the weapons' character and capabilities. Every weapon also has a bespoke gold mod with unique effects.
Conclusion
All of that works as a solid base for contracts, secondary objectives, events that'll take you across the map... That's not only key for game longevity but it's also why Marathon is so absorbing, Tau Ceti IV exists beyond your purpose.
Best "flop" I've ever played.
Sony Live service Slop
this game will make you super happy or super mad no in between. always be on your toes and missing a shot when fighting against real people isn’t an option. expect to die a lot, even to the game and its dookie engine. there’s a lot of issues but the dev team are actually very helpful and whilst the player count has been pretty disappointing im sure its just a slow burn typa game. 10/10 im marathoning it
Bungie does it again, thrilling gameplay with a good sense of tension. Forget the haters opinion, this is classic Bungie at there best.
The reason I rated this game as a yes is because of how visualy satisfiying it is to play. On the other hand this game is defenitly not for everyone. It's pretty hardcore, so if you are going to but it to have just a fun time shooting people in a very cool artstyle game, it's not for you. The gunfights with actual other runners is so uncommon that when it happens, your not ready unless you are (again) playing in the mindset of hardcore.
The game is really good the gunplay feels so satisfying and generally its a very fun game to play and grind (yes theres some grind obviously ) ... It really is a shame that it gets so much hate for absolutely no valid reason whatsoever ... The only downside for me is the performance it needs to be more optimized but devs constantly keep releasing updates and fixes so they seem to care
Game's fun and rewarding, if you don't W-key into every engagement then complain in the reviews or on forums where everyone circlejerks about how sweaty or woke the game is. Best extraction shooter out there right now, and it keeps getting better. If you've played other extraction shooters before and bounced hard off of them, this game probably isn't for you. But if you're patient, mindful, and comfortable with a little bit of adversity, then I highly recommend this game. Gunplay, movement, worldbuilding, art, and sound design are all second-to-none. Runs well on low-end hardware. Shells are overall well-designed and make map traversal and PvP interactions dynamic and engaging. Maps each have their own unique feel and gameplay loop and encourage players to constantly make risk/reward evaluations. The UESC bots force you to either go loud or avoid them, put constant pressure on you to not rat in any one place for too long, and are a significant threat, especially while also dealing with other players. While I don't personally think they're a very interesting faction to fight in a pure PvE environment, they serve excellently in their role as a PvEvP enemy. And there's a whole bestiary of potential [REDACTED] enemies from the older Marathon series that could get added in the future to add some spice for those seeking a PvE-only experience. If PvP's not your thing, keep an eye on this one, they're actively working on adding more PvE game modes, with a major PvE update planned for next season in mid-late September. Devs actually listen to the community and keep experimenting with the formula to see what works, which is a good thing. There's always some rotating or experimental game mode to keep the game relatively fresh. The game is constantly improving with frequent balance improvements, content updates, and bugfixes, and there's always room for improvement. *This is what a living game with devs who care looks like.* Worst thing about this game are the grifters and astroturfers scaring people away from having a unique experience. Concurrent player numbers are not the same as total playerbase, and SteamDB numbers do not account for the player numbers on consoles. Anyone who tells you otherwise is either an idiot, or thinks *you* are and are actively trying to profit off of you. P.S. Destiny 2 was a shambling corpse long before it died. It's okay to mourn it's passing, I do too. But Marathon didn't kill your favorite game, corporate greed did. Blame the execs up at Sony who keep making stupid, petty decisions at your expense. I encourage you to find a new 3rd space full of people who are passionate and actually enjoy nice things instead of constantly ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ on them. You'll be happier for it, trust me.
one of the best FPS games to come out this year, maybe even one of the best games to come out this year. I hope bungie can amplify the sauce a bit more to get more players on and staying, but overall, great experience. 9/10
Fun for a season but that is about it. The endless grind every season is simply not fun to do. The gunplay is good and I cannot fault it but is it that reason enough to play? Go play CS or Apex for a much better gunplay experience. There are issues with balance around guns/shells/mods but every game with a meta has this and Bungie has been good with keeping overpowered items in check. I played for 200 hours so I got my money's worth, but I think any sane person will find doing the same grind after a season ends too much and will just decide to move on to something else. While the community cringes whenever somebody mentions the player count, there is a reason why the game has less than 10k players with 85% positive reviews - THE GAME DOES NOT HAVE LONG-TERM REPLAYABILITY So pick this game up now and have fun in this season and the next because the game will probably shut down by then.
