Reviews
Magic Cat is a charming indie roguelike that combines fast-paced action, randomized progression, and an adorable fantasy theme centered around a spell-casting feline hero. Developed and published by Hakimi Game, the title embraces the familiar foundations of the roguelike genre while presenting them through a colorful hand-drawn visual style. Players take control of a black magic cat and venture into dangerous stages filled with monsters, upgrades, and powerful bosses, creating a gameplay loop that focuses heavily on survival, experimentation, and continuous improvement. The game's strongest feature is its accessibility. Magic Cat does not burden players with overly complex mechanics or lengthy tutorials. Instead, it introduces its core systems quickly, allowing players to jump into combat almost immediately. The straightforward controls make the experience easy to learn, but the escalating difficulty ensures that mastering the game requires careful decision-making. Every run becomes a balancing act between offensive power, defensive upgrades, and strategic movement as enemy numbers steadily increase. Combat revolves around defeating large groups of creatures while collecting upgrades that strengthen the cat's magical abilities. The random nature of the progression system keeps each playthrough feeling fresh, as players are frequently offered different enhancement paths. Some runs may focus on raw damage output, while others encourage survivability or specialized magical combinations. This unpredictability is a major contributor to the game's replay value, as experimenting with various builds becomes an enjoyable part of the overall experience. The hand-drawn presentation adds considerable personality to the adventure. While the visuals are relatively simple compared to larger productions, they possess a distinctive charm that fits the magical theme perfectly. The environments, enemies, and character designs create a whimsical atmosphere that makes the game approachable and visually appealing. The black cat protagonist is particularly memorable, serving as a fitting centerpiece for the game's fantasy setting. Boss encounters provide some of the most exciting moments in Magic Cat. These battles serve as significant skill checks that test both player reflexes and build effectiveness. Unlike standard enemy waves, bosses require greater attention to attack patterns and positioning. Defeating them delivers a satisfying sense of accomplishment and gives players clear progression goals beyond simply surviving for as long as possible. Their inclusion helps maintain excitement throughout repeated runs and prevents the gameplay from becoming overly repetitive. Another noteworthy aspect is the game's permanent progression system. Even failed attempts contribute to long-term advancement through off-field upgrades and character enhancements. This design choice helps reduce frustration and encourages players to keep experimenting. The feeling of becoming gradually stronger over multiple sessions creates a rewarding sense of momentum, particularly for players who enjoy roguelikes that balance challenge with meaningful progression. Although Magic Cat succeeds in delivering an entertaining gameplay loop, its overall scope remains relatively modest. Players searching for a deep narrative, extensive world-building, or highly complex RPG systems may find the experience somewhat limited. The game's primary focus is action, progression, and replayability rather than storytelling or exploration. Fortunately, it performs well within those goals and offers enough variety to maintain player interest across multiple sessions. In the end, Magic Cat is an enjoyable indie roguelike that understands its strengths and builds upon them effectively. Its combination of charming visuals, randomized upgrades, engaging combat, satisfying boss encounters, and long-term progression creates an experience that is both approachable and rewarding. While it may not revolutionize the genre, it delivers a polished and entertaining adventure that should appeal to fans of action roguelikes and survivor-style games. The result is a delightful magical journey starring an unlikely feline hero that offers plenty of reasons to return for one more run. Rating: 6/10
A simple and addictive action roguelike game.
