Love of Magic Book 1: The Crown, first part of Droid Productions' trilogy, opens with our protagonist, Owyn (name of player's choice), saying goodbye to his mother, a single parent with only him in the world, as he leaves for Scotland to study magic at the University of Edinburgh and earn a Master of Arts in applied Thaumaturgy (Evoc.).
This situation arose when a guy started ranting about elves, gods, and the end of the world, which was followed by a mysterious attack by a hellhound, which our hero escaped thanks to an inexplicable vision of a magical poker hand. After the scare, Owen, drunk, searched the internet for as much information about magic as he could and, upon awakening, found himself enrolled in a European university's magic program, where he was accepted a few weeks later, along with another mysterious attack.
Our hero is now about to set out to explore what appears to be a new Old World, where he may shed light on these strange events in what will be a singular reinterpretation of the Arthurian myth and mythology more generally.
More than a sandbox-style visual novel, it is a true RPG, the title places in fact enormous emphasis on the story, which is fundamentally linear and not manipulable by the player ([spoiler]for example, Emily will always be Owen's favorite girl and the one he will marry, while the others will only be concubines[/spoiler]), but very complex, and on the role-playing aspect relating to character growth, increasing his stats, collecting objects and money, and on events and side quests, with particular attention to time management, the truly limited resource.
Indeed, distributing activities throughout the day so as to be able to get everywhere will be complicated, especially since starting at a certain point, around day 90 or so, there will be several scripted events that will literally burn up entire days without giving us the chance to do anything. Therefore, even if this may not be the case on the first playthrough, which will in any case continue for another two games until Book 3 before New Game+ ([spoiler]which will have some new content, depending on the side quests completed in Books 2 and 3, as well as an easier start[/spoiler]), consulting the game's Wiki or using a guide is not at all discouraged.
In practice, there will be a lot of clicking and reading, while the spicy scenes, even if present and captivating narratively speaking, are quite limited in quantity and remain in the background compared to the rest, in fact this is not a title suitable for those looking for immediate, frequent, and intense erotic entertainment.
Last but not least, a particular form of Heads-up poker (inspired by Sword & Poker) is the basis for all fights, which aren't rare and cannot be skipped, even if there are some aids, such as move suggestions or the 5 adjustable difficulty levels in the game's settings, as well as the special abilities of companions and gems associated with points (and a debug mode that lets you edit everything).
The girl models are well-made and original, even though they generally have fairly similar body types, the animations are effective, though they're not spectacular in "that" sense and the soundtrack is very nice and varied, but you'll often need to use the Jukebox or the options to change songs.
[spoiler]Personal note: Molly makes her cards quite clear right away and from the first lesson with her she raises the stakes to very high levels, qualifying in my eyes as best girl, followed by Olivia, whose pleasant stubborn gullibility, together with her boobs and glasses, earns her points, then Bella, Kath, Emily, Sarah, Jannice, Chloe, Katie, Valery, Hakone, Akane, Jenny, Snowdrop, Aoife and Diana.[/spoiler]

Love of Magic Book 1: The Crown, prima parte della trilogia di Droid Productions, si apre col nostro protagonista, Owyn (nome a scelta del giocatore), che sta salutando la madre, genitore single e con solo lui al mondo, in quanto partirà per la Scozia onde seguire un corso di magia all'Università di Edimburgo e ottenere un Master of Arts in Taumaturgia applicata (Evoc.).
Tale situazione si è venuta a creare, quando un tizio si è messo a sproloquiare a proposito di elfi, dei e la fine del mondo, evento al quale è seguito un misterioso attacco da parte di un segugio infernale a cui il nostro eroe è scampato grazie ad una inspiegabile visione di una mano di poker magica. Passato lo spavento, Owen, ubriaco, ha cercato su internet quanto più possibile a proposito della magia e, al risveglio, si è ritrovato iscritto al corso di magia di un'università europea, la cui accettazione è arrivata poche settimane dopo, insieme ad un altro misterioso attacco.
Il nostro si trova ora in procinto di partire per esplorare quello che sembra un nuovo Vecchio Mondo, dove forse farà luce su questi strani avvenimenti in quella che sarà una singolare reinterpretazione del mito arturiano e della mitologia più in generale.
Più di una visual novel in stile sandbox, si tratta di un vero e proprio RPG, il titolo infatti pone un'enorme enfasi sulla storia, fondamentalmente lineare e non manipolabile dal giocatore ([spoiler]per esempio, Emily sarà sempre la ragazza preferita da Owen e quella che sposerà, mentre le altre saranno solo concubine[/spoiler]), ma assai articolata, e sull'aspetto ruolistico relativo alla crescita del personaggio, all'incremento delle sue statistiche, alla raccolta di oggetti e del denaro, e sugli eventi e sulle missioni secondarie, con particolare attenzione alla gestione del tempo, la vera risorsa limitata.
Infatti, distribuire le attività nell'arco della giornata in modo da poter arrivare ovunque sarà complicato, anche perché a partire da un certo momento, intorno al giorno 90 circa, ci saranno parecchi eventi scriptati che bruceranno letteralmente delle intere giornate senza darci la possibilità di fare nulla, pertanto, anche se magari non è il caso alla prima partita, che comunque si protrarrà per altri due giochi fino al Book 3 prima del New Game+ ([spoiler]che avrà alcuni nuovi contenuti, a seconda delle quest secondarie fatte nei Book 2 e 3, oltre che ad un inizio agevolato[/spoiler]), la consultazione della Wiki del gioco o l'uso di una guida non è affatto da sconsigliare.
In pratica ci sarà da cliccare e leggere moltissimo, mentre le scene piccanti, per quanto presenti e accattivanti narrativamente parlando, sono quantitativamente limitate e rimangono in secondo piano rispetto al resto, non si tratta infatti di un titolo adatto a chi cerca un'intrattenimento erotico immediato, frequente e intenso.
Non da ultimo, una particolare forma di poker scoperto (ispirato a Sword & Poker) costituisce la base per tutti i combattimenti, che non sono rari e non si possono saltare, anche se sono presenti alcuni aiuti, come i suggerimenti sulle mosse o i 5 livelli difficoltà regolabili nelle opzioni del gioco, oltre che alle abilità speciali di compagni e gemme associate ai punti (e una debug mode che permette di editare tutto).
I modelli delle ragazze sono ben fatti e originali, anche se in genere presentano corporature piuttosto simili tra loro, mentre le animazioni funzionano, per quanto non si possa parlare di spettacolarità in "quel" senso e la colonna sonora è molto bella e variata, ma bisognerà avvalersi spesso del Jukebox, o le opzioni, per cambiare brano.
[spoiler]Nota personale: Molly mette subito abbastanza in chiaro le sue carte e fin dalla prima lezione con lei alza la posta a livelli altissimi qualificandosi ai miei occhi come best girl, seguita da Olivia, la cui simpatica credulonità testarda, insieme a tette e occhiali, le fa guadagnare punti, poi Bella, Kath, Emily, Sarah, Jannice, Chloe, Katie, Valery, Hakone, Akane, Jenny, Snowdrop, Aoife e Diana.[/spoiler]
