They totally destroyed the game. You cannot play anymore this game without gamepad
This RTS game starts off fine and then after the first few tutorial levels it settles into a highly repetitive and tedious tug-of-war type game where you are constantly rebuilding more soldiers and leading them into battle while the enemy is doing the exact same thing. The problem is that this drags on for hours and hours of doing the same thing and there is NO way to save your progress. So if you play for hours and need to stop playing for any reason, you will lose all your progress and have to start that campaign chapter completely over. You also never really get the feeling that you are making any progress in wiping out the enemy because they are constantly rebuilding structures and respawning more troops and there is no indication that you are winning the battle. You are also discouraged from participating in combat yourself and are instead directed to keep leading your soldiers into battle where they can do the fighting for you. There is also no difficulty setting and I found the dialogue boring and the story silly in that it focuses too much on your character's family. Overall, I did not enjoy my time spent with this game once the actual campaign started and I cannot recommend it.
An Unique Game Worth Your Money
Gameplay: As a top-down action RTS, Lornsword Winter Chronicle has one of the most unique game mechanics. First, there is a main RTS component in which you would have to build and upgrade buildings to develop a troop tech tree while managing gold and upkeep. One aspect that I enjoy is you can obtain gold from multiple sources: the traditional gold mine, range troop barracks, farm (which increases upkeep) or townhall. Consequently, as you progress through the game with a declining gold mine reserve, you can shift gold production to other "less efficient" buildings with infinite reserves. See my Youtube video linked below. Second, Lonesword is also an action game - your keyboard controls the main protagonist hero with movements, slash attacks, summons, and equipment. Additionally, instead of letting buildings automatic produce troops to fight according to preset waypoints, you can manually grab a detachment of soldiers to follow your hero and reinforce existing fights or speed up their movement. Your hero may not feel as powerful as he should when solo but I quickly realize he is best used to cut down bunched up troops while your soldiers tank the enemy damage. Graphics and Sound: As expected of ex-developers of Creative Assembly, the graphics, music and voice-overs are superb. The cutscenes are also enjoyable to sit through. Downsides: Since this is an action RTS, you can't control troops with a mouse and rely on preset waypoints or your hero. One of the main issues is waypoints for a building do not automatically update once an enemy camp is destroyed; you have to demolish a building (often fully upgraded) and waste gold rebuilding the same building at the same spot to correct its waypoints to a new target. This is illustrated in my Youtube video. I doubt this "feature" is intentional and I hope the developers correct this in future updates. Additionally, at least one map ("Destroy the northeast Headquarters" mission) lacks waypoints completely and the automatic pathing is not the smartest: allied troops target neutrals first before the main objective. Unless intentional, I hope to be given a choice to place waypoints manually on similar maps. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k9Q0pvizt-w
this game has full controller support.... this game has ONLY controller support store page doesn't tell you that you NEED a remote control to play, i see no reason why. + story + voice acting - gameplay. its like a hack and slash, but you can only HACK kinda like a watered down Overlord: Fellowship of Evil with piss poor army control
Enjoyed this game a lot. I got it in a bundle and honestly only chose it because it had controller support. Wanted to play a couch coop game with spouse and we stumbled upon this in my library Gameplay was fun and engaging, challenging on the higher difficulties. We got all the achievements except one which seems to have a glitch. The art was lovely. Voice acting is just ok. Story and world building were more intense than I thought going into it. Game ended on a "but wait there's more" But had a satisfying conclusion regardless. I'd totally play a second if it came out Not sure if it's worth full price, wait for a sale. Games about 20 hours worth of gameplay and a lot of fun, different maps
Somewhere between a RTS and a hack&slash there's this. What the games has is a ton of lore, a ton of missions, and a lot of possibilities to play a differently than another player would. What the games lack is balance between difficulties. And someone need to fix that Demolition button that is located right next to the FLAG button! How many time have I delete a building when I all I wanted was to change the troop status. Its not perfect, the second chapter looks must better than the first one. Some unit are OP, especially the shadows, since there is no PvP it's not that bad. A lot of micro management and running around will turn off some player, just wish the Teleport function was working both ways. there may be too much dialogue to skip for some players, wish we didn't have to go through them every time we redo a mission.
This game is not what it looks like, and that's a good point. The very first steps are not very appealing, but digging deeper into the lore and the gameplay after a few hours really improves the experience.Lore illustrations are quite unique, in-game graphics are nice, though a bit old-fashioned which emphasizes nostalgia of the top-down RTS genra. But the gameplay is not conventional RTS and although I would liked more features to impact battles, the content and difficulty makes this game challenging and fun to play. Plus: you can play the campaign in split-screen.Otherwise dubbing and music are really nice! That's worth a solid 7/10.
