I bought the Deluxe Edition, but the game is still running the Friends Pass version.
I'm deeply upset at how mid the game is given how incredible the art and ideas are. I got through two bosses, then returned it. Dialog hurts to listen to. The ideas beneath the story are cool, but the writing and performances don't sell it well. I'm sure some of the gameplay mechanics get more complicated later in the game, but enemy encounters seem like they just happen. There isn't much thought about why enemies are standing around where they are, which is a subtle flare that I didn't appreciate in Dark Souls until I had to think about why the encounters here feel soulless. It echos Dark Souls 2's encounters mostly, at least in the small portion I played. Hit first and hit hard, so you basically have no chance to take damage, or else you'll take a lot, with bosses that are spongy and fairly easy to dodge. On top of all that, the art is jaw dropping. Both the fidelity of everything, and the art direction of each area. It LOOKS incredible, but that's most of what it has. It's unfair to judge the whole game from the early impression, but I feel no compulsion to continue just to prove a point. If you're the type of person who liked the style of Dark Souls, but thought it was too difficult to play and understand, or if you're a fan of old-ish Ubisoft style games, you will probably like this game more.
All in all not too bad, has a lot of heart
Not to be confused with Lords Of The Fallen (2014), the first Soulslike game I actually played and completed on PS3 back in the day! Lords of the Fallen (2023) is just about better in every possible way despite it's rocky launch and persisting issues. This is one of few in the ever expanding Soulslike genre I was actually interested in playing, and after seeing the badass trailer at Gamescom 2022 use a Danzig track and the Gameplay trailer use one of Iron Maiden's, I knew this one was right for me.
https://youtu.be/oceLRiqQsko?si=lAEhkCkjqOngmhHQ&t=66 You actually get to recreate that trailer moment, if you play the song yourself^ https://youtu.be/opCzLiK_DG4?si=9RrK9wAcT0t5c_RG&t=106 Fear of the Dark! They've also since used Ghost in the LotF2 gameplay trailer.
Things I Like:
+++ Metal AF Art Style: A heavy metal album come to life! I love the aesthetic, the graphics are nice and I absolutely love some of the designs in this and subsequently started following a couple of the artists who worked on the game. Awesome weapons, badass enemies and cool armour abound. +++ Level of Challenge: I haven't found many Soulslikes that I like and none that I'm confident enough to say I'm even good at, but this one is quite beginner friendly! Not just in general difficulty, but there are multiple characters you can summon to assist in boss fights and dying once sends you to the Umbral version of the world, essentially giving you an extra life and a chance of a comeback. There is also the Veteran mode and Ironman for those who want a tougher game, along with multiple modifiers to change up your run. (I myself jumped straight into random enemies + random loot and it's been fun!) ++ Plenty of gear: Lots of weapons, armour sets and spells that all have impact. Flails, spears, axes, all with their own movesets and combos. Even boss weapons that come with unique moves! ++ Friendpass + Online Co-Op: Jump in with an amigo with your friendpass! Help each other with bosses, share the loot and grab some achievements. Even this long after release, you can still find fellow crusaders who need help on their quest. ++ Some cool boss encounters: Some of the enemy design in general is really cool! Better still, some of the bosses (not all) are really badass. My favourites have generally been the knight characters, the colossal bosses and the ones that completely surprise you with the encounter with an 'oh $#!T!' moment. + Some Endgame Content: 3 Endings, each one rewarding you with a new starting class for your next run. There's NG+ and you can even choose to replay the game with a difficulty spike (NG+1). There are also boss gauntlets which challenge you to defeat a series of bosses, without assistance and without dying for rewards.
Things I Dislike:
--- Paid Time Saver DLC: The Dark Crusader class is unlockable in-game for free. Why sell it? -- Lock On Problems: One of the buttons I rely on most goes on strike sometimes, causing avoidable panic, damage and death. I dont get why! Sometimes I can lock onto enemies I can see around corners and sometimes I cant lock onto enemies stood right next to me. -- Glitches: Getting stuck out of bounds and having to use a consumable item I was lucky enough to have on me, just to teleport myself to safety, but in the progress, resetting all the enemies so I lost progress. This has happened twice. -- Questing in this game: No map, no questlog and very little NPC interaction means you better pay attention to what the characters are saying and where places are or you'll get lost along the storyline. I'm pretty good at mental navigation but I'm barely keeping up with the overall story and some sidequests are so hidden and tedious that I've decided I straight up don't want to waste my time doing them for such meagre rewards. - Some not so cool boss encounters: While there are plenty unique boss fights, sometimes you'll run into a mini-boss which are just regular enemies with higher health and maybe one new move. If you've been playing with a randomiser, you've fought a ton of these enemies already, so the encounters feel like boring time wasters. - The cool Knight armour and helms often have low stats: I wish there was transmog or a way to upgrade armour, because some of the cool full helms that my knight character would wear simply have poor stats compared to the wackier ones I have. So playing as the heavily-armoured knight class, I have to choose between fashion and wanting to make it out alive, which makes a lot of the gear pieces irrelevant.
