Simple, aggravating, unpolished, WIP. Go buy Celeste.
Lord of sh!te
What a monotonous game about a farmer that walks around jumping on things and avoiding things. This game falls into the wanna-be-meatboy category for me. And this game can´t even brag about the aesthetics or music. It´s just your standard 2D platformer with spikes and retro-sounding music. You´ve played this game before on newgrounds.com, you´ve played it a million times over! It brings nothing special to the table and offers nothing new that you haven´t seen before.
verdict
If somebody gave me the choice to either kill a cute koala bear or play this game again AND get paid for it....I´d kill the koala bear.
I had a lot of fun with the game... for both the challenge and the atmosphere. Loved the music! Very challenging, especially for casual players such as myself. I noted that this may be a con for the game, due to certain parts being very challenging. The look and feel of the game is fantastic! Major points for the controller compatibility and game sound volume control, which more than a few Indie games have been lacking. I did a live review of the game, and presented my thoughts and reactions in real time (up through the first boss): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vEqrqOLvroo
Lords of Strife is a game about pain, which isn't evident by the colorful backgrounds and soundtrack reminiscent of classic video games, but the mood is right there in the title. The gameplay is difficult and innovative in that to move forward you will have to suffer. The platforming and puzzles will take several attempts to achieve mastery, but you will also have to adjust to enemies and how they change the levels. Several are impossible without effectively utilizing the enemies, and creatures like the frogs, owls, and coyotes provide more utility than obstacle. Your greatest weapon is determination, and the only other contender is a pitchfork. The dialogue is humorously grim. Death is frequent but, at least in the earlier stages, not a large setback, and advancing to the next screen preserves your progress. Ride those scarecrows.
Lords of Strife is yet another of literally thousands of 2D retro pixel platformers infesting Steam and lowering the average quality of all video games everywhere. There's a weird slightly eastern farmer theme, it's unclear who thought that was the concept that would revitalize the dead and completely overdone obsolete platformer genre. Based on the utterly flat reception the game had, nobody. There's some slashing and you can double jump, but only when you do your first jump from a scarecrow... yeah, me neither. From a technical perspective, the game doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard. A choice was made to use obsolete, decades old retro pixel "art" as a substitute for contemporary PC graphics. It's unclear if this is due to lack of budget or talent, regardless, the overall visual quality of the game is extremely low as a result. While there are options to change the resolution for the game, all this does is scale up the simplistic 2D art assets used to make the game, which makes little or no difference to the graphics quality. Without any other substantial graphics tweaks, it's not possible for gamers to improve the lacklustre 2D visuals. The controls can't be customised, which will be an annoyance for many, but it can also render the game unplayable for differently-abled gamers. PC gamers will be insulted by the demand from the developer that a console peasant children's toy controller should be used, despite this being on PC. Developers should try to be aware which platform they're developing for, and must never, under any circumstances dictate to gamers how their games are to be experienced. The game also insults gamers with prompts for console peasant childrens toys instead of keyboard controls. These technical defects push this game below acceptable standards for any modern PC game. The poor quality of this game is reflected by how many people spent time with it. At the time of this review, SteamDB shows the all-time peak player number was only 3 players. This is a remarkably low number, and now, the only player activity occurs once or twice a month, presumably someone loading it up to see what it is then quickly uninstalling it. Considering there's over 120 million gamers on Steam and well over 50,000 games for gamers to choose from (over 9,000 completely free titles), the overwhelming lack of interest in this low quality game is to be expected. Lords of Strife has the laughable, eye-watering price of around $5 USD, it's not worth it given the defects and shortcomings with the product, especially considering the sheer number of completely free, much higher quality games on Steam.
Lords of strife is a delightfully deranged game. 5/5 would perish again.

Lords of Strife is a simple but punishing puzzle platformer. I died 100x in 20 minutes. This "The End is Nigh" -style game focuses on hurting yourself to get through 7 crushing world; all of which add a new layer of frustration to the mix. It starts simple with allowing you to jump on scarecrows to propel yourself forward. Then it throws ghosts at you that help you across your perilous journey. I recommend this game to everyone that enjoys frequent death platformers with a side of rage. Lords of Strife gameplay footage can be found here: https://youtu.be/FGmWcDOsWhM
