I came into this expecting an adventure game with combat focusing around assembling words, and while that is *kind of* what it is, it didn't quite hit the mark. What the 'puzzles' actually are are an opportunity for jokes- assemble a word, if it's one that works you see a small scene play out and things progress, if not, try again. It's not a puzzle as much as it is 'select the funny you want to receive', which... can be charming, but overall ended up feeling like a let-down. Little polish problems like the 'is the cutscene stuck? Open the menu!` prompt showing up nearly every cutscene and a character forgetting the player-input name in favor of the default 'Leximan' stuck out to me, potentially just because I wasn't really grabbed by the game. The hit-to-miss ratio of the jokes were about 50/50 to me, although comedy is subjective. The writing has character behind it and the game in general shows a lot of soul, but by halfway through chapter 2 I was pretty firmly out of the experience. If you're a word weirdo like me, don't expect challenge to lie in the word-construction mechanic.
In short: awesome. The story kept me guessing what's going to happen next. Never a dull moment with the gameplay
as it introduced many mini games that connected well with the story. My favorite: getting to unlock the „Character moments”
. The music simply, splendid! 10/10 🦊
I just wanna start off by saying I like this game. But it is fundamentally flawed by being almost completely unrealized. I bought this game because I thought the premise looked really really neat. And you know what? The premise is really neat. You’re meant to combine little fragments of letters and words to create some sort of narrative or move in the game. This is either to solve puzzles or dialogue options or anything else. Unfortunately the game feels almost completely unrealized. The creativity is actually really low. There’s a lot of words you can make That the game tells you doesn’t work. It’s really limiting. And it really doesn’t give you a big assortment of choices to begin with so when you choose something and it doesn’t work it’s extremely unsatisfying. On top of that you really don’t get these opportunities that often in the game. There’s a feature in game where you can use the lexicon while just walking around but I think there was maybe a handful of opportunities that you could do that in the entire game and it’s never obvious what you should be able to write Considering you are so limited. I accidentally stumbled upon a fight later in the game because I typed in a bunch of words that I thought would work and one finally did, but it wasn’t in the lexicon??? The game is constantly changing up how it’s played. Like it’s cute that they add a little mini games in it but there’s an entire section that just becomes a full on RPG and that’s not what I wanted this game to be (especially when they had so much opportunity to make that RPG part more interesting with the lexicon). It Really feels like this was a rush job and I really really wanted to like this game. The writing is neat, the characters are neat, but the whole premise of the game is just genuinely unrealized. I Like with these guys did but I want them to let it cook in the oven for a little bit longer and really do more with this idea that they built up.
Leximan is a charming little game, it has loveable characters and a nice retro vibe. It's not long, and at points I felt like fleshing out some of the side stories would've really helped elevate the game, but overall it felt satisfying to play. There are some visual bugs (such as characters supposedly being in a room with you and talking to you but their sprites are not present, or the opposite of that issue) and points at which the direction of game-play could have been a little clearer, however despite any of these issues I definitely recommend people give the game a go! It blends a variety of different combat mechanics and gives us slices of different genres within the play-through which i thought was super fun! Although, I wouldn't recommend the game to anyone who want's to grind out combat as i didn't struggle with any encounters at all throughout the game and i'm not particularly skilled hehe :) Enjoy!
Nice little game, could use some more polish. The game teaches you in the beginning about battles where you put words together as spells, as well as the ability to use word spells out of battle too. You mainly choose word spells based on plot/text clues, and I feel like battles early game didn't really change from battles late game, you just needed to read the story to know what to do. I felt like word spells out of battle was more for discovering secrets and easter eggs, than for progressing through the story, they could have been used in more ways. As you continue playing through the game, you'll end up playing several different minigames too. These are pretty neat imo and feel like a diversion from the RPG style. The art is pixel art as you see in the promotional video and screenshots. The music is nice, sound effects are pretty good too. Story is a big chunk of this game, and I thought it was alright. Sometimes it's slow and sometimes it's fast, but I liked it after I beat the whole game with the true ending. The main thing stopping me from wholeheartedly endorsing this game is where the fun comes from. For example, how would I answer the question "What kind of game is this?" Is this a typing game? No. A battle RPG? I would say no, but I can see other arguing yes. A racing game? For a little bit of time. A puzzle game? Somewhat, I would say that's the second focus. Mainly, I would call this a reading game. The story comes from the plot as you read it, and when you explore your area you mainly walk around and click on interactable objects in the room to read their description. The biggest chunk of fun comes from the plot, as well as exploring different parts of the world to see what different things do. And seeing how the characters interact with each other throughout the game, that's great too. After I finish a boss fight, I know I can take a hand off my keyboard to munch on popcorn while my other hand advances through a couple minutes of plot text that I'm reading. If you get this game expecting lots of mechanics around the word spells, you may be put off by the amount of reading there is instead. Overall I do recommend the game given these considerations. I did find it fun to try teasing out all the secrets I could find in this game. One last note, I played through most of the game on my steam deck and it was playable, even with all visual effects on. The only part that gave me trouble was one part of the game where you put together a plan, that section has some small text that was hard for me to read even with VFX disabled, so I hooked up my deck to a monitor to read it.
I will start off by admitting, I didn't not beat the game and have since refunded it. I played for about two hours and called it quits, for a large portion of minor problems, with a select few listed that I personally feel are the most readily noticeable and take umbrage with. Note: These are largely opinions, and, as stated previously, I did not finish the game and have since refunded it, so some of the opinions I did list may not show up later on, or they may be worse than expected. Please keep it in mind when deciding to purchase the product. TL;DR, at the bottom if don't like long reviews. 1) The art style of the sprites make it hard to determine what you are looking at, especially in contrast from when you enter "in battle" with a being, and you think it'll look one way but it ends up looking very different, bugged me a lot more than I thought it would. Especially when it came to battle sprites and portrait sprites. 2) The game play is not as expected. Oh, sure, you do put words together to create effects, but often times it's very much "you have to select the RIGHT word to progress" with all the other options being jokes or not explored as well. Even with being able to use words in the environment, it's only for CERTAIN words to effect the environment and - more notably - only at specific POINTS in the game. Which, in the time I played it, was not a lot. Additionally, more time is spent in minigames to progress the story than to actually is in the gameplay itself. Some minigames are more enjoyable than others, but it definitely felt like more time was spent on creating minigames than it was spent on the actual gameplay itself. 3 & 4) While the concept and - initial - story is interesting, they don't do enough with it, or the characters. Like the antagonist of the first act. While it is understandable why they resent Elementie as Wressa does, it doesn't explain how the antagonist escaped to begin with, why they were attacking the tower right then and there instead of earlier on - not all of these questions need to be answered immediately, obviously, but there wasn't enough done previously within the first act to make us sympathize or connect to the antagonist. Not to mention, there's not enough motive - at least in that specific point in the story - for us to understand why the antagonist attacked the academy and not the MC or Wressa, who both have more than enough reason (and, imo, power) to resent and attack Elementie to get out of the tower, neither of them have. There's no clear reason for why the antagonist to have been the one to attack the tower, when that role could have been filled in by at least three other characters - that being Muscle Guy, Wressa, and the MC. It's those gaps in the story that trip me up. And these also include the other questions, such as:
Did Sparx - antagonist of Act 1 - destroy the other towers? If not, why did Elementie not notify the other towers of the attack on his school? Why did they have to go to the city when they could have gone to one of the OTHER six towers? Why is going to the city a bad thing when there are places that create work for mages? Why not go to a place that requires magic work and see if they can't get work? Or, hell, even go exploring now that they aren't bound to the basement?
What's worse is that some of the information is in missable dialogue, so maybe there was mention of some story points that I missed from other characters, but others feel like they came out of left field, even when I was actively exploring every nook and cranny for dialogue options and world-building tid-bits. Which is...an issue. All this leaves the world and the characters feeling one-dimensional and one note vs the fleshed out world the developers were clearly aiming for. 5) This is a minor gripe, but the music got really repetitive in the first act. 6) This is the final straw: The game was, and to me felt, very railroaded. In a tower full of magic and strange classes, you don't really see that or get that feeling because the doors don't open and there's no textboxes to like. say "oh there's a class in session, better not disturb them!" or, "You're not tall enough to reach the handle on this one", to make the world feel lived in. Which is normally fine in a indie game, but there's so many doors and there are so many instances of little jokes, goofs, and gags within the "battles", and so many instances that I could tell I was being roadblocked, there was not enough being done to engage with the game itself or be connected to the characters or the world this takes place in. More polish was needed, especially in the little things. Added in with all the other issues, and I just could not find it in myself to keep playing. TL;DR: It's not a bad game, honestly, and the concept - both story and game-wise - is interesting enough to engage with, at least initially. But more polish, time, and refinement was needed to be done to make it a good game for me, in almost every aspect of the game itself, in the two-ish hours of time that I did play it.
Honestly did not expect the game to be THIS good. I wanted to give it a shot because of the Undertale-esque look, half expecting to not go past one session. Now I'm 9 hours in, not fully done, and really not wanting it to be over. Great humor, super fun game mechanics, literally several genres of games integrated into one. An absolute treat.
Mega awesome game, undertale if there were more wizards, just wizards, rats as well, loved the rats, more rats please mmthank yoo, more leximan i crave more,,, must be more DIFFICULT NEED HARDER DIFFICULTY,,, MORE SECRETS,,,, LORE!!!!! Just finished the game (true ending, natch) and I had a lot of fun with it! Genuinely funny, surprisingly heartfelt, and constantly unpredictable! The basic gameplay is basically an adventure game, but the genre shifts frequently with lots of minigames and hidden secrets. The basic iteration of the main "combat" involves picking word fragments to form a "spell," which is always fun, especially if you go for the funnier options. Not everything will work out (of course!) but the game does reward ingenuity and there's a lot of tricks up its sleeve. Highly recommended.
